1. The Faculty of History was established in 1956, closely associated with the founding of the prestigious Hanoi University, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. From the founding generation of renowned educators and scientists such as Professor Tran Duc Thao, Professor Dao Duy Anh, Professor Tran Van Giau, Professor Dinh Xuan Lam, Professor Phan Huy Le, Professor Ha Van Tan, and Professor Tran Quoc Vuong, the Faculty now has 206 staff members. Currently, the Faculty of History has 44 staff members, 8 departments, one center, and one specialized unit. These include the departments of Ancient and Medieval Vietnamese History, Modern and Contemporary Vietnamese History, World History, History of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Archaeology, Cultural Studies and Vietnamese Cultural History, Historical Theory and Urban Studies, the Intercultural Center, and the Office and Documentation unit. With such a structure, the Department of History is one of the units with the largest number of staff in the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Besides experienced staff members who are leading experts nationwide in history education and research, the Department of History also has a large team of young staff, many of whom have attained the rank of Associate Professor and Doctor, and have received training and further education abroad.
To date, the Faculty of History has trained 57 out of 60 cohorts of students, with approximately 7,000 history graduates across various programs (full-time and part-time); along with about 800 master's degree holders and over 200 doctoral degree holders. Equipped with the knowledge and skills acquired, graduates are confident and effectively utilize their abilities and qualities in any work environment. Therefore, many students, graduate students, and doctoral candidates from the Faculty of History have become renowned leaders and scientists, holding key positions in state management agencies, universities, institutes, scientific research agencies, news agencies, publishing houses, libraries, museums, archives, educational institutions, cultural and information organizations, etc.
Currently, the Faculty of History offers standard programs (approximately 100 students/year), high-quality programs (approximately 20 students/year), and teacher training programs (approximately 50 students/year). Each year, the Faculty is authorized to enroll approximately 50 postgraduate students and dozens of doctoral candidates. The Faculty of History is a leading institution nationwide in history education, from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, offering a full range of historical science specializations.
On November 13, 2000, the Department of History was awarded a prestigious title by the State.Labor HeroIn addition, dozens of faculty members of the Department have been awarded the titles of Hero of Labor (Professor Tran Van Giau), People's Teacher, and Excellent Teacher; and have received many medals, awards, and certificates of merit of various kinds. This is a well-deserved recognition of the great achievements and contributions of the collective and staff of the Department of History in the field of education and scientific research.

2. A strategic policy throughout the history of the Department of History has been the close integration of training and scientific research. In this spirit, scientific research has always been identified by the department's staff as a central task. To date, over 5,000 scientific research works by faculty members have been published, including textbooks, monographs and reference books, and articles in specialized scientific journals both domestically and internationally. On average, each academic year, the department adds about a dozen new books and over 50 research papers published in scientific journals and participating in domestic and international scientific conferences.
The Department of History has also been implementing many programs, projects, and scientific research topics at various levels. Among them are many state-level scientific research projects, such asTraditional values and contemporary Vietnamese people; Political and social institutions in rural Vietnam; President Ho Chi Minh's ideology of national unity; History of the Vietnamese Government; History and current state of the political system in Vietnam; Scientific arguments and practical solutions to strengthen the relationship between the Party and the people in our country today; Southern territory and southwestern border in history; History of the formation and development of the Southern region; History of Vietnam's sovereignty over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa; Education in Thang Long - Hanoi, orientation for the development of education and training in the capital city during the period of industrialization and modernization; Thang Long - Hanoi as the political and administrative center of the country - Lessons on management and development; The impact of cultural transformation and integration on development in Vietnam today…
In particular, in the implementation of the National Social Science Project.Research and compile the History of Vietnam.Under the direct guidance of the Central Party Secretariat and the management of the Ministry of Science and Technology, faculty members of the Department of History have been directly assigned to lead, edit, and co-edit 15 out of 30 research projects, corresponding to independent state-level scientific projects. This is a great honor, affirming the position and scientific prestige of the Department of History in the Vietnamese historical community. In addition, faculty members of the Department of History have been and are currently leading and implementing numerous scientific projects at the ministerial, provincial, and city levels, as well as at the Hanoi National University level, and collaborative research projects with localities...
In general, the Department of History places great emphasis on collaborative scientific research activities. The Department has established and continues to maintain relationships with numerous universities and research institutes in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Australia, the United States, Japan, South Korea, China, Thailand, and other countries. Besides collaborative training relationships (many faculty and students of the Department receive further training abroad; many foreign scholars and students come to the Department for academic exchange and study), the Department of History has also collaborated effectively with foreign universities and research institutes to organize numerous international scientific conferences and implement exchange and collaborative research programs. Faculty members have participated in many international scientific conferences and seminars; at the same time, the Department of History has directly organized or participated in organizing many large-scale international scientific conferences domestically. Through this, faculty members, researchers, postgraduate students, and undergraduate students of the Faculty have the opportunity to regularly participate in international scientific activities, continuously improve their professional skills and foreign language proficiency, and at the same time gradually raise the scientific and training level of the Faculty in the trend of integration with the region and the world.
The future research orientation of the Faculty of History will continue to focus on five major themes: the history of the southern region, especially the Southern part of Vietnam; urban areas and the urbanization process in Vietnam; cultural regions, cultural spaces, and cultural exchanges within the country and internationally; trade relations and the process of establishing Vietnam's sovereignty in the East Sea; international relations, the integration process, and Vietnam's unique development path.
With their exceptionally outstanding contributions to scientific research, many faculty members of the History Department have received national and international awards. Professors Tran Duc Thao, Dao Duy Anh, Tran Van Giau, Ha Van Tan, Tran Quoc Vuong… received the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Science and Technology; Professor Phan Huy Le received the Asian Culture Prize from Japan (Fukuoka); Professors Phan Dai Doan, Phan Huu Dat, Nguyen Thua Hy… received the State Prize for Science and Technology; Professors Tran Quoc Vuong, Ha Van Tan, Pham Thi Tam, Vu Minh Giang, Nguyen Hai Ke… received the Outstanding Scientific Research Award of Hanoi National University.

Also in line with the policy of closely integrating training and scientific research, the Faculty of History always prioritizes scientific research among students, creating a favorable environment and conditions for students to participate in scientific research. From the moment they enter university, students of the Faculty of History are gradually introduced to a completely different learning method compared to high school. Throughout their four years of study, students are regularly trained in an academic environment, attending national and international scientific conferences and seminars, scientific discussions and presentations organized by the University, the Faculty, departments, and the Youth Union - Student Association. In addition to classroom lessons, students participate in field trips, internships, professional practice, and skill development.
From their first year, students participate in scientific research under the dedicated guidance and mentorship of lecturers both within and outside the Faculty. Every year, the Faculty of History organizes student scientific conferences, from the departmental level to the faculty level. High-quality reports at the faculty level are eligible to participate in student scientific conferences at the university, Hanoi National University, and higher levels. For many years, the Faculty of History has consistently led the entire university in student scientific research achievements. In some years, the number of student scientific reports from the Faculty of History reached nearly 200 out of the total number of students enrolled in the Faculty. Many student scientific reports from the Faculty have won high awards at the university, national university, and ministerial levels. This provides a favorable environment for students to hone their scientific research skills, contributing to improved academic results. Students who achieve good results in scientific research will be given priority in evaluating their academic performance, receiving scholarships and awards, and being considered for Party membership… Many graduates have shared that, even though they don't work in the research field, participating in scientific research and using the research skills they learned as students has helped them a great deal in their current work.

Students with outstanding academic and scientific research achievements, after graduation, will be retained by the Faculty as teaching staff, receive further training, or be recommended by their professors to work in various central and local government agencies. Many students, after graduating and working in different places, have returned to pursue postgraduate and doctoral studies at the Faculty, while some continue to participate in and collaborate with professors on scientific research projects.
The lecturers of the History Department have always shown special interest in, and actively sought opportunities for, students to participate in scientific research projects. In 1999, the "Asian Trade Research Group" was established, led by Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim, bringing together a number of staff members from within and outside the Department, mainly young staff, doctoral students, postgraduate students, and undergraduate students of the History Department. After 17 years of establishment, the Group has achieved many remarkable accomplishments in research, training, and international cooperation; for many consecutive years, it has received Certificates of Merit and recognition as a "Strong Research Group" of Hanoi National University. In its upcoming plans, the Department of History will establish two new research groups: the "Thang Long - Hanoi Research Group" and the "Cultural Resources Group," aiming to bring together a large number of staff from all departments, postgraduate students, and undergraduate students within the Department to carry out important research tasks, meeting the development trends of historiography and the requirements of innovation and integration of the country in the current period.
4. There have been 60 courses, with over 7,000 students studying at the Department of History of Hanoi University, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. For many, it was a stroke of luck, a pivotal choice in their lives, and they have no regrets about choosing to study History at the heroic Department of History.
