As a scientist, Professor Ha Minh Duc is one of the leading figures in modern Vietnamese literature, with numerous outstanding achievements and contributions in many academic fields. Along with Professors Hoang Xuan Nhi, Hoang Nhu Mai, Phan Cu De, Tran Dinh Huou, and many other educators and scientists, Professor Ha Minh Duc has built the reputation and scientific standing of a leading training and research center for Vietnamese literature. His academic prestige has become a source of pride not only for the Faculty of Literature - former Hanoi University, and for the Literature, Linguistics, Journalism and Communication faculties of the current University of Humanities and Social Sciences, but also for the entire teaching, research, and literary community of Vietnam.
Professor Ha Minh Duc embodies a harmonious blend of reason, scientific thinking, and the soul of an artist. He balances teaching and research with a passionate pursuit of creative writing. His two strongest genres are essays and poetry. To date, he has published seven volumes of poetry and seven volumes of essays. His stories, emotions, and memories from his personal life are authentic and highly regarded by readers and experts alike.
Professor Ha Minh Duc is not only a talented educator and scientist, but also a highly capable and experienced administrator. In the early 1990s, in response to the need to train professional human resources in the field of journalism and communication, Professor Ha Minh Duc was entrusted with the responsibility of establishing the Faculty of Journalism at Hanoi University and became its first Dean. With his strong character, scientific prestige, and dedication, he made significant contributions to the training of staff, the development of theoretical frameworks and teaching materials, and the formulation of a new academic discipline for the University. Many valuable and enduring research works on journalism were meticulously developed by him and the faculty staff, such as:Ho Chi Minh's press, Time and Witnesses(Memoirs of over 40 journalists from the periods of resistance against the French and the Americans)History of Vietnamese Journalism (1865-1945), Journalism - Theoretical and Practical Issues...Thanks to the collective contributions of the Journalism Faculty under the guidance of Professor, journalism and media have gradually been affirmed within the system of social sciences and humanities, training in theory combined with practical work, and research closely linked to and serving the development of the country.
For over half a century, Professor Ha Minh Duc dedicated himself to the Faculty of Literature and Journalism (now the Faculty of Literature and the Faculty of Journalism and Communication), even while serving as the Director of the Institute of Literature. He devoted all his efforts to the task of training, especially the training of young lecturers. Professor Ha Minh Duc was a talented educator and pedagogue. Regardless of his position, he directly or indirectly taught and contributed to the success of many generations of students, who have made contributions in many fields of science and social life, some of whom have become leading managers and leaders of the country. The title of People's Teacher awarded by the State not only reflects the honor bestowed upon him for his great contributions to education and training but also affirms the qualities and talents of a distinguished teacher.
Since 1995, Professor Ha Minh Duc has continued to concurrently hold the positions of Director of the Institute of Literature and Editor-in-Chief of the Literature Magazine. During his eight years at the helm of a scientific research institute, with the support of the Institute's staff, Professor Ha Minh Duc created a new era of development for this leading literary research institution in the country. As a respected scholar, he made significant contributions to connecting and promoting cooperation between researchers and scientific institutions in Vietnam with universities, research institutes, and international scholars. He also contributed to introducing the achievements of Vietnamese literary research and creation to the world. These tireless efforts have contributed to the development of the country's culture and arts.
Recognizing and appreciating Professor Ha Minh Duc's outstanding contributions to the country's education and scientific research, the Party and State have bestowed upon him many prestigious awards: the First-Class Labor Medal, two State Awards in 2000 and 2001, and especially the Ho Chi Minh Award in 2012. The portrait of Professor Ha Minh Duc, now 80 years old, is that of an exemplary teacher, a diligent scientist, with a sharp intellect, and a calm and composed demeanor amidst the ups and downs of life. For generations of faculty and staff at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in particular, and those working in the cultural and artistic fields of the country in general, he will forever remain a role model, a shining example to learn from and strive to emulate.
