Professor Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities) presented the Second Class Labor Medal to Associate Professor Nguyen Thien Nam, Head of the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, at the ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Faculty's establishment (November 16, 2018).
Established in 1968, the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language originated from the Faculty of Vietnamese Language, Hanoi University. The Faculty was officially entrusted by the Party and State with the national task of teaching Vietnamese to foreign students in accordance with agreements between the Vietnamese government and other countries.
In 1995, the Faculty changed its name to the Faculty of Vietnamese Language and Culture for Foreigners and began training Bachelor's degree students in Vietnamese Language and Culture for foreigners. In 2008, the Faculty was once again renamed the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language and is the only unit in the country authorized to train students in two Bachelor's programs in Vietnamese Studies: one for Vietnamese students and one for foreigners.

To date, the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language is the most prestigious institution in the country for training in Vietnamese language and Vietnamese studies, and is gradually aiming to become a center of Vietnamese studies of international stature. The Vietnamese studies program at the Faculty has its own unique identity and strengths: it is an interdisciplinary science built upon a foundation of basic knowledge in the social sciences and humanities.

The 50th anniversary celebration was attended by many diplomatic officials from various countries: the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the State of Palestine to Vietnam - Mr. Saadi Salama, the Ambassador of Romania - Mr. Valeriu Arteni, the Ambassador of Cuba -Ms. Lianys Torres Rivera, Ambassador of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea - Ms.Kim Myong-gil...
The Faculty's outstanding achievement is that it has trained over 10,000 foreigners in Vietnamese language and culture. Many of them have become seasoned diplomats and high-level interpreters. Many world-renowned Vietnam scholars have studied and trained at the Faculty. Notably, 15 foreign students have become Ambassadors or Chargé d'affaires ad interim in Vietnam.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thien Nam (Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies):Fifty years have passed since the establishment of the Vietnamese Language Department, 59 years since the founding of the Vietnamese Language Unit, and 62 years since Vietnamese for foreigners was taught at this institution. All these years and months are more than enough time for us to look back on a time full of memories and to be proud of the Department's contributions to the University, to the common cause of the nation, and to confidently embark on a new journey."
The Faculty successfully completed its special mission of training Vietnamese language skills for Lao officials and students, as well as officials and students from universities in Cambodia, for 10 consecutive years following the Pol Pot genocide. Many international students trained at the Faculty have become renowned Vietnamese writers, considered "better than native speakers," such as Joe (nicknamed Strawberry), whose books have become bestsellers in Vietnam.I'm Dâu,going in the opposite direction at breakneck speed...Some former students even write poetry in Vietnamese with deep emotion and refined language, like Jorgen Anes from Norway with his poem.I love Hanoi.

Professor Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities): "I have a very strong emotional attachment to the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and the Vietnamese Language, not only as a university leader. I participated in teaching the Faculty's 3+1 program and master's program. I think that even though the Faculty's name has changed many times, looking back at its history from 1956 as the Vietnamese Language Department, 1968 as the Faculty of Vietnamese Language, 1995 as the Faculty of Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Studies for Foreigners, to 2008 as the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and the Vietnamese Language, the traditional core of the Faculty remains teaching foreigners, serving as a bridge connecting Vietnamese culture with the world. The Faculty's staff helps to honor the Vietnamese language and allow Vietnamese culture to shine. We have every right to be joyful, excited, and proud to contribute to bringing the Vietnamese language to international friends, thereby connecting Vietnam with all nations."
In terms of research, the faculty members of the Department have completed dozens of research projects at the ministerial, national university, and university levels. The Vietnamese language textbooks for foreigners compiled by the faculty members are useful and make exemplary contributions to the compilation of language teaching materials suitable for the needs of each stage. Many research and compilation works by faculty members in the department have had a significant impact, such as the more than 70 books by Associate Professor Nguyen Thach Giang, and other works.Vietnamese-English DictionaryThe monumental works awarded the State Prize for Science and Technology to the late Associate Professor Bui Phung, and the works on grammar, dictionaries of instrumental words and function words by Associate Professor Do Thanh, Professor Hoang Trong Phien, Professor Dinh Van Duc, the late Associate Professor Nguyen Anh Que…

Professor Hoang Trong Phien (the first head of the Vietnamese Language Department): The early years of the Department were very difficult, but generations of teachers and staff have truly dedicated their hearts and souls to teaching Vietnamese to foreign students, supporting them with accommodation and helping them have a stable life. From the beginning, the Department has focused on answering the question of how to teach Vietnamese to foreigners. And to this day, this principle remains valid: not teaching theory, but teaching practical Vietnamese, but on a scientific basis. The Vietnamese language curriculum is based on linguistics, not phonetics as before.
In particular, in recent years, the Faculty has achieved a number of outstanding accomplishments with national and international impact, such as the successful compilation of:Vietnamese language proficiency framework for foreigners, applicable nationwide and in many countries; The format of the Vietnamese language proficiency assessment test follows the Vietnamese language proficiency framework for foreigners.Applicable nationwide and in many countries;CVietnamese Teacher Training Program for Foreignerssystematically;Training teachers to teach Vietnamese to Vietnamese people living abroad.for the Government (5 courses with a total of over 200 teachers from more than 15 countries, and effectively meeting the needs of training Vietnamese language teachers for Vietnamese people abroad). The Faculty is responsible for the professional aspects of the project.Enhancing online Vietnamese language instruction for Vietnamese people living abroad..

Romanian Ambassador Valeriu Arteni (former student of the Faculty from 1971-1976): I love the Vietnamese language and I love Vietnam. Vietnamese is an incredibly beautiful and rich language. We studied in the countryside during our evacuation. It was here that my solid foundation in Vietnamese was formed later on. I had the precious opportunity to learn about Vietnamese culture at its roots, in the countryside. I didn't want to cry like this, but I only cry when I'm happy to be home - the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and the Vietnamese Language.
The faculty members of the Department are ambassadors spreading the Vietnamese language and culture to the world. From Washington (USA) to Berlin (Germany), from Tokyo in the Land of the Rising Sun to London in the United Kingdom, from Kaohsiung (Taiwan) to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, from Stockholm in Sweden to Seoul in South Korea, the footprints of the faculty members of the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language are everywhere, fulfilling their noble mission as ambassadors of the Vietnamese language and culture.

Palestinian Ambassador Saadi Salama (a former student of the Faculty from 1980-1984): The teachers of the Faculty were like our fathers and mothers, helping us overcome difficulties in life, even though their own lives were also very difficult. I carry within me love and pride for the Vietnamese language wherever I go in the world, telling people about the beauty and richness of Vietnamese culture, of my beloved second homeland.
Currently, in addition to its expertise in teaching Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese language to foreigners, the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language has taken on a new strategic mission: training students in Vietnamese Studies. From the 2013-2014 academic year onwards, Vietnamese Studies has been recognized as one of the seven fundamental science disciplines of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Paying tribute to veteran teachers.
Since 2015, the Faculty has offered a Master's program in Vietnamese Studies and will soon launch a Bachelor's program in Vietnamese Studies taught in English for international students. Currently, the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language is the only faculty in Vietnam that officially trains both international and Vietnamese students. The Faculty has four cohorts of Vietnamese students currently studying at the university, with a total of over 500 students, both Vietnamese and international.

Paying tribute to the generations of leaders of the Faculty.
