Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh (Rector of University of Social Sciences and Humanities) spoke at the opening ceremony
Dear leaders of Hanoi National University,
Dear international and Vietnamese guests,
Dear teachers, staff and employees!
Dear students!
First of all, on behalf of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, I would like to send to the representatives of the VNU leadership, delegates, teachers and students the warmest congratulations on the occasion of the new school year 2018-2019! Today, we are holding the Opening Ceremony to welcome the new school year and welcome 2,034 new students of K63 to officially join the common home of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU. Never in the history of the University have we welcomed such a large number of first-year students as this year.
The 2017-2018 school year has passed with indelible marks. In terms of organization, the Institute of Journalism and Communication, a new model towards autonomy and high quality, was established for the first time. 19 staff were awarded the titles of professor and associate professor, bringing the total number of staff with the titles of associate professor and professor of the school to 114. In terms of training, more than 2,000 first-year students have officially enrolled, of which for the first time, more than 80 students chose Southeast Asian Studies. Literature is the 4th program after Linguistics, Oriental Studies and Philosophy to meet the quality standards of the ASEAN University Network (AUN). In terms of science, in the past school year, the school's staff published 60 international publications, including 10 articles printed in high-impact journals (ISI/SCOPUS) and hundreds of domestic publications. Also in the past year, thousands of staff and students of the school as well as those of partners have participated in exchange programs between parties, making the internationalization trend increasingly stronger.... On this occasion, I would like to thank the leadership and cooperation of VNU, the Ministry of Education and Training, central and local departments, diplomatic agencies, domestic and international partners and the silent dedication of the staff, civil servants, public employees, postgraduates, graduate students and generations of students of the school.
On behalf of the teachers, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the students of K63 and their parents for placing their trust in this school. In the context of the world undergoing rapid changes due to globalization and the 4.0 industrial revolution, the students' choices further demonstrate the importance of social sciences and humanities. The more developed the society, the more important the role of social sciences becomes. Social sciences help people have a more humane, profound, and comprehensive view of human development; If the internet and the 4.0 industrial revolution connect all things, social sciences help connect people, souls, and hearts.
Unlike students of previous and future courses, K63 students will be a special generation of students because they are those born in the year 2000. 18 years ago, the whole world was worried about the year 2000 computer problem (also known as the Y2K problem, millennium bug) which was mainly caused by old generation computers and old electronic clock microchips that could not recognize the difference between the years 2000 and 1900. I believe that students born in the year 2000, the Y2K generation students, will also conquer the challenges on their path as the world quickly overcame the millennium bug.
The world of the 2000s, also a flat world, a world of globalization and internationalization, is blurring the boundaries between countries, cultures and individuals. But in that context, the trend of localization, personalization and identity also strongly rises, in order to affirm the ego, the individuality, and the differences. Instead of just the process of globalization, there is a not-so-light interweaving of international and local elements that the Japanese since the 1980s have called "dochakuka” (meaning global localization). This term was called “Glocalization” (meaning local globalization). If you want to master this world, you must first know who you are and where you are; If you only focus on internationalization, you will lose yourself and dissolve into the flow of the world; On the contrary, if you only care about localization, you will forever be alone in the vast flow of humanity. If you want to integrate with the world, you must first integrate with those who share the same origin; if you want to erase the distance with the world, you must first remove the barriers between us; if you want your flow to quickly merge with the ocean, do not build rapids. In short, if you want to internationalize the world, you must first internationalize your own home.
The 2018-2019 academic year is a pivotal year for the University's internationalization strategy. We are facing enormous challenges such as building a model and method of managing a research university in the trend of globalization, competition, autonomy, and the 4.0 industrial revolution. To overcome these challenges, there is no other way but to focus on investing in two strategic tasks: attracting, organizing, improving the quality of postgraduate training and creating high-quality scientific products with profound social impact. The position and prestige of a leading research university can only be measured by the quantity and quality of postgraduate training programs and scientific research products. If we can carry out these two strategic tasks, the reputation, position and ranking of the University will be significantly enhanced.
Can all of us, especially the 2000 generation, do it? I believe so. This school with a tradition of more than 70 years, with a team of highly qualified and dedicated staff, has, is, and will help those who have placed their trust in them. Concluding my speech to the Y2K generation and teachers on the occasion of the Opening Ceremony of the 2018-2019 school year, I would like to repeat a few sentences from the famous letter written nearly 200 years ago by US President Abraham Lincoln to his son's teachers: “Teach him the wonderful world beyond books. But also give him the quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on a green hillside… Teach him to always have sublime faith in himself because then he will always have sublime faith in mankind.”
I wish the leaders of VNU, delegates, teachers, and beloved students good health, success, and luck in the new school year. Thank you very much.
