The top student was once a physics major.

Nguyen Thi Tu Trinh, a freshman majoring in Public Relations, was the top-scoring student in the D78 group during the 2018 admissions season at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. What led her, a former physics student, to switch to a literature-focused class and then choose to apply to this university of humanities…?

I used to be a student specializing in Physics…

Tu Trinh achieved a total of 25 points in the D78 subject group, with scores of 9.5 in Literature, 8.2 in English, and 7.33 in the History-Geography-Civics combination. To achieve such results, she had to put in a lot of effort. Tu Trinh shared that History and Geography were not her specialized subjects; she only started studying them close to the university entrance exam.

As a middle school student, Tu Trinh was a member of the physics team. Trinh said that this was "her first love." She participated in many physics competitions, and the high awards she won in city-level physics competitions are a source of pride for her even now.

However, upon entering high school, Tu Trinh chose to study in the specialized Literature class 12D1 at Phan Dinh Phung High School (Ha Tinh). Trinh shared that she wanted to break free from her shell, to explore new things, and therefore decided to change direction. Perhaps it was fate that led her to the specialized Literature class, and her Literature teacher was the one who "inspired" her. Her love for literature grew and stayed with her throughout her high school years.

Humanism in me…

Tu Trinh shared that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was her first choice from the beginning and she never intended to change it, neither before nor after receiving her university entrance exam results. The university's predecessor was Hanoi University - a well-known name with a long history.

According to Trinh, she particularly cherishes the concept of "humanity." This largely stems from her love for her father. Throughout her childhood, her father's image and teachings were imprinted on her thoughts and actions. For Trinh, her father was her first teacher. Even later in life, his only wish was for Trinh to become a normal person, living a peaceful life like everyone else. Her father taught her to always live kindly, to behave humanely, and to love everyone. He believed that love, not material possessions or status, would bring happiness and strength to each person's life. The little girl understood all of her father's teachings and always kept them deeply ingrained in her heart.

Furthermore, the negative aspects of life that she witnessed brought her even closer to humanism. This is precisely what she has always sought amidst a society plagued by the dark sides of the market economy and the power of money. Love and humanistic values are incredibly precious in this society. She truly is a girl with a profound soul, yet she is also lively and playful – qualities that make everyone fond of Trinh from the first meeting.

My reasons for choosing Public Relations…

Exposure to the outside world and meeting many people has inspired and ignited in Tu Trinh the dream of traveling to new lands. Trinh shares her desire to help many people and, in some way, to seek justice for the disadvantaged. Therefore, she loves journalism and wants to use her pen to fight for a more just and better society.

Over time, that dream gradually shifted towards a career in event organizing – especially events with a strong impact on cultural and social life. To convey humanistic messages and values, event organizers need not only quick thinking, dynamism, good organizational skills, and the ability to connect and build relationships, but also a compassionate heart, a love for beauty, and a desire to win the emotions of the community. Therefore, she decided to choose Public Relations at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Hopefully, she will achieve her dreams and have meaningful university years with wonderful teachers and friends at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.
