In recent years, the concept of "social critique" and the role of journalism in social critique have become "hot" issues attracting the attention of many researchers. Social critique and the role of media in social critique are also chosen by many undergraduate and graduate students and doctoral candidates as graduation projects from bachelor's to doctoral levels. However, the appearance of social critique in these works is mainly in the form of articles or chapters to serve the research process, rather than being comprehensively and systematically organized as a monograph or scholarly work.
It can be said that the project"Social commentary in Vietnamese journalism through some prominent events"The work of Master Phan Van Kien is the first comprehensive and systematic monograph exploring the issue of social critique in Vietnamese journalism today. This monograph reflects the passion of a young researcher for a novel yet challenging topic.

Book cover
Instead of being structured into chapters like other research works, this monograph is divided into two main parts: Part one focuses on general theoretical issues concerning social criticism and social criticism in journalism. Part two focuses on analyzing several cases of social criticism in typical journalistic works. This structure, although simple, is very clear and logical in terms of content.
In the first part of the monograph, the author presents, in both a general and specific manner, issues related to social critique and social critique in journalism. The greatest success of this section is that, despite referencing numerous previous studies on social critique, the issues addressed do not overlap with those studies. Through clear and logical explanations, the author provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of social critique in journalism, from its origins and concepts to general issues concerning the role of journalism in social critique, the current state of social critique in journalism, and the objective and subjective obstacles faced by journalism in fulfilling this role.

Master Phan Van Kien was one of the first people at the Faculty of Journalism and Communication, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi to complete his undergraduate thesis on the topic of social critique in journalism.
Part two of the monograph focuses on an in-depth examination of three prominent events in the press recently. The three selected events are all representative examples, strongly reflecting the social critique presented by the press, and each event possesses its own unique critical tone. The author's success lies not only in analyzing the critical content of each event in the press, but also in clearly identifying the methods and techniques of critique employed in each event within the series of articles.
Although this is only a preliminary monograph on social critique in journalism, and the author Phan Van Kien's first work, it demonstrates the author's passion and dedication in preparing materials and conducting research. This revised edition has been supplemented with more materials and richer, more specific analyses that are more relevant to the current state of journalism in recent years. In fact, the author is also continuously supplementing his previously acquired knowledge on this issue by undertaking a doctoral dissertation in journalism on social critique in journalism.
Out of respect for the author's passion and abilities, as well as the content and subject matter of this monograph, I would like to introduce this work to readers.
