Ethnographic research is the methodology for defining an anthropological topic. Ethnographic research, or ethnographic fieldwork, is indispensable for any anthropological research project and for those working in the field of anthropology. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional ethnographic research activities have been restricted, or even impossible, for various reasons. Over the past two years, faculty members, students, and graduate students of the Anthropology Department have faced numerous challenges in conducting ethnographic fieldwork and practical training. For students, the inability to conduct ethnographic fieldwork can lead to delays in thesis and dissertation progress, and discourage them from undertaking their dissertations. For faculty members, the inability to conduct ethnographic fieldwork can slow down research projects and result in a lack of or inability to update ethnographic materials for scientific publication.
Given the uncertainty surrounding the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Anthropology is organizing a training course on Netnography research methods to equip anthropology students, trainees, and postgraduate researchers with the latest methodological knowledge in anthropology worldwide. Netnography is an effective solution for anthropology students to continue their scientific research, complete theses, dissertations, and doctoral theses using a new approach suitable for the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring safe disease prevention. The training course also serves as an activity to unify innovation, response, and adaptation in online teaching and scientific research, combining online and in-person methods within the current COVID-19 pandemic context of the Department of Anthropology.
A team of 10 anthropologists working at the Department of Anthropology, the Institute of Ethnology, and the French Institute for Development Studies will give presentations and provide training to students, trainees, and postgraduate researchers in the Department of Anthropology on network ethnographic research.
