Wednesday - December 13, 2023 04:40
The exhibition provides an opportunity for the public to access valuable map resources, directly serving the purpose of understanding, studying, and researching Vietnamese history, regional history, and international history.

To commemorate over 400 years of people-to-people exchanges and 50 years of bilateral diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Netherlands, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Hanoi, is organizing a thematic exhibition: “Drawing the Dragon Map: Vietnam in the Eyes of Dutch Cartographers”.
The exhibition showcases ancient maps depicting parts of Vietnam's territory from various periods, drawn and published by the Dutch in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Over the centuries, different types of maps, from nautical charts used for navigation to atlases, have been created and printed. They reflect, to some extent, the changing political and geographical situation of Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Most of the maps in this exhibition represent a geographical area larger than Vietnam, providing insight into the relationship between Vietnam and its surrounding regions. This exhibition uses maps from the Leiden University Library collection (Netherlands) created by authors Martijin Storms and Ngo Thuy Truc Lam.
The exhibition content is divided into four sections:
1. Charts and the Dutch East India Company;
2. Vietnam on early Dutch atlases;
3. Map illustrations for the book;

4. Vietnam as depicted in atlases used in schools during the 19th century.
The exhibition provides an opportunity for the public to access valuable map resources, directly serving the purpose of understanding, studying, and researching Vietnamese history, regional history, and international history.
