The Center for Population Studies and Social Work (PSASW) is a scientific organization, research, training and application of population science, social work, under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The Center was established under Decision 237 QD/XHNV dated February 20, 2002 of the President of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Before the official decision to establish, the Center had two phases of operation, which are: Phase 1: operating with the program "population, family and development" approved by the Scientific Council of the University and signed by the President of the University of Social Sciences Dao Trong Thi. Phase 2: after the establishment of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, at the proposal of the Department of Science on the establishment of the "Population, family and social work research program in development", signed by the President Phung Huu Phu. Although the Center for Population and Social Work Research has not been in operation for long, it has had an important position in research and training in the fields it undertakes, especially in Social Work and Community Development. The Center's reputation is affirmed through its programs, trusted and cooperated by domestic and foreign scientists and colleagues.

Organizational structure

Center Director: Assoc.Prof.Dr. Hoang Ba Thinh In addition to office staff and scientific assistants, the Center does not have permanent research staff. Members of the Board of Directors, the Scientific Advisory Council and researchers all work on a part-time, part-time or short-term basis. Currently, the Center has about 20 scientists working on a part-time collaborator basis. In addition, the Center also has a large team of collaborators, who are excellent staff, lecturers and students, with capacity and experience in the fields of Social Work, Community Development, Sociology, Demography, Social Psychology, etc. who have participated in and carried out scientific research works, projects and topics domestically and internationally. The Center's activities are under the direct leadership of the Board of Directors and the Scientific Advisory Council, including prestigious scholars from Universities and Scientific Research Institutes.

Training and research tasks

Target: The primary goal of the Center is to gather and build a team of scientists, undergraduate and graduate students at home and abroad to conduct training programs, research and disseminate knowledge on population and social work.Mission: The Center is organized on the basis of specific programs to ensure that activities are carried out in the most dynamic, flexible and effective manner. The Center's research and training programs include:

  • Gender and public health issues
  • Population and development
Development strategy: To build the Center into a leading domestic unit in the field of research, especially in training skills and practical capacity in Social Work and Community Development.Cooperation programs:The Center has implemented a number of cooperation programs with domestic and international organizations, for example:
  • Program of translating documents and compiling books on Sociology, Social Work, Community Development, with support from the Ford Foundation.
  • Social Work Trainer Training Program, with support from UNICEF.
  • Research program on human resources for social work with children.

Achievements

About science
  • For the first time, it opened up international cooperation and exchange, creating conditions for the meeting of scientists inside and outside the school, internationally in the fields of population, social work, and sociology.
  • Compiled 07 valuable books on Sociology, Social Work and Community Development.
  • Contributing significantly to the development of Vietnamese Sociology, creating conditions for the establishment of the Vietnam Sociological Association.
  • On training and development of staff:
  • Opened 4 training courses for Social Work lecturers, taught by 12 foreign professors (4 French professors, 1 Belgian professor, 2 Australian professors, 3 American professors, 1 British professor, 1 German professor)
  • Send a number of young cadres to study abroad.
  • Building the Social Work industry (with School, Ministry)
On foreign relations
  • Expanding domestic and international relations contributes to enhancing the position and prestige of the school domestically and internationally: contributing to building the Faculty of Sociology, Faculty of Social Work - Ho Chi Minh City National University
  • Established with more than two dozen universities in the world (USA, France, Japan, Belgium, Australia, Germany, etc.). Gained prestige with international scientists, especially in the USA, France, and Australia.
