The Center for Population Studies and Social Work (PSASW) is a scientific organization engaged in research, training, and application of population science and social work, under the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The Center was established by Decision 237 QD/XHNV dated February 20, 2002, of the Rector of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. Prior to its official establishment, the Center operated in two phases: Phase 1: operating with the program "Population, Family, and Development," approved by the Scientific Council of the University and signed by the Rector, Dao Trong Thi. Phase 2: after the establishment of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, at the request of the Science Department, the Center established the "Program for Research on Population, Family, and Social Work in Development," signed by the Rector, Phung Huu Phu. Despite its relatively short operating history, the Center for Population and Social Work Research has established a significant position in research and training in its areas of responsibility, particularly in social work and community development. The Center's reputation is affirmed through its programs and activities, earning the trust and cooperation of domestic and international scientists and colleagues.

Organizational structure

Center DirectorAssociate Professor Dr. Hoang Ba Thinh: Besides office staff and scientific assistants, the Center does not have full-time research staff. Members of the Board of Directors, the Scientific Advisory Council, and researchers all work on a part-time, short-term, or supplementary basis. Currently, the Center has about 20 scientists working as part-time collaborators. In addition, the Center has a large team of collaborators, including outstanding staff, lecturers, and students with competence and experience in the fields of Social Work, Community Development, Sociology, Demography, Social Psychology, etc., who have participated in and carried out scientific research projects and topics both domestically and internationally. The Center's activities are under the direct leadership of the Board of Directors and the Scientific Advisory Council, which includes reputable scholars from universities and scientific research institutes.

Training and research tasks

TargetThe Center's primary objective is to assemble and build a team of scientists, undergraduate and postgraduate students from both within and outside the country to conduct training programs, research, and disseminate knowledge on population and social work.MissionThe Center is organized on the basis of specific programs to ensure that activities are conducted in the most dynamic, flexible, and effective manner. Development strategyTo develop the Center into a leading national institution in the field of research, particularly in training skills and practical competencies in Social Work and Community Development.Cooperation programsThe center has implemented several cooperation programs with domestic and international organizations, for example:
  • This program involves translating documents and compiling books on Sociology, Social Work, and Community Development, with support from the Ford Foundation.
  • A training program for social work instructors, with support from UNICEF.
  • A research program on human resources for social work with children.

Achievements

In science
  • This event marked the beginning of international cooperation and exchange, facilitating meetings between scientists from within and outside the university, and internationally, in the fields of population, social work, and sociology.
  • He has compiled seven valuable books on Sociology, Social Work, and Community Development.
  • Making a significant contribution to the development of the field of Sociology in Vietnam and creating the conditions for the establishment of the Vietnam Sociological Association.
  • Regarding training and professional development of staff:
  • Four training courses for social work lecturers were organized, taught by 12 foreign professors (4 professors from France, 1 professor from Belgium, 2 professors from Australia, 3 professors from the USA, 1 professor from the UK, and 1 professor from Germany).
  • We have sent a number of young officials to study abroad.
  • Establishing a Social Work program (with the School and the Ministry)
Regarding foreign relations
  • Expanding domestic and international relations contributes to enhancing the school's position and prestige both domestically and internationally: contributing to the development of the Faculty of Sociology and the Faculty of Social Work - Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Established partnerships with over two dozen universities worldwide (USA, France, Japan, Belgium, Australia, Germany, etc.). Gained prestige among international scientists, especially in the USA, France, and Australia.
