Continuing the journey to meet the 2011 university valedictorians, the next destination of the USSH reporter group was exactly 30 minutes by motorbike from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities on a beautiful sunny afternoon. There were not many alleys, no need to ask for directions, on time, we arrived at the house of the valedictorian of block D, Le Thi Hong Ngoc.

This is not the first time I take the university entrance exam.

When asked about the feelings of a valedictorian, Ngoc quickly told us: This is not the first time I have taken the university entrance exam. I was born in 1992, and this year I am taking the exam again. Last year I also took the Psychology exam, and got 24 points, but it was a "requested exam" to get admission points to the Dentistry major of the International Faculty (VNU). But after studying Dentistry for one semester, I decided to take a leave of absence to retake the exam to the Psychology Faculty - University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The feeling of taking the exam this time is not as stressful and worrying as last year, although my Literature result is not as high as last year, the other two subjects are higher. This year, I was very happy to know the result and become valedictorian, so my efforts and hard work were rewarded, and my parents are less worried than before.

Quit Dentistry Because of Passion for Psychology

Continuing the story with us, she said: When she decided to drop out of Dentistry school, her family completely disagreed. Her mother was the one who opposed her decision the most. After all, getting into that major was not easy, and she had already studied for a while.

As a student at Amsterdam High School, Ngoc was not too worried about retaking the exam, but convincing her parents to let her retake the exam was quite difficult. Ngoc shared: My parents explained to me a lot at that time and I also explained and convinced them a lot. In the end, my parents supported and created conditions for me to take the Psychology exam. Even my older sister at that time advised me to listen to my parents, and gradually she also encouraged me. The valedictorian of the D block also had very impressive academic achievements, being an excellent student for many years in a row, winning third prize in the city-level French language competition in grade 11, and second prize in grade 12... Talking about the motivation for her choice, Ngoc said: When I was in grade 12, my French teacher also suggested that I take the Psychology exam because the Faculty had a joint training program with AUF. Moreover, I also have a hobby of reading stories and playing games related to psychology, the most interesting is when the characters use psychological knowledge to compete with each other. All of these things have drawn me back to Psychology. When sharing the secret to learning a foreign language, Ngoc gave a very simple comparison: Learning a foreign language is like riding a bicycle, riding a lot will become familiar and no longer feel difficult.

Only with passion can one succeed.

During our conversation, Ngoc was very reserved about her personal achievements. Talking to us, Mr. Le Xuan Tue - Ngoc's father - said: Ngoc is a bit quiet, sometimes we feel that she is still "naive", but when reading the articles she sent to the newspaper, both her friends and I did not expect our daughter to have such profound thoughts. During her high school years, Ngoc had many articles published in the newspapers Hoa Hoc Tro and Sinh Vien Viet Nam.

Thanks to her passion, Ngoc was able to convince her parents to support her, and it was her passion that made her parents change their minds. Uncle Le Xuan Tue added: Her family's wish was for her to pursue medicine, but she didn't want to continue studying before the end of the semester, so her family was very worried and troubled by her decision. But when they saw her determination, they were very encouraging and believed in her ability. When they saw the announcement of the results this year, she was the valedictorian, and her family was very excited. Her friends and the two of them talked to each other and found that it was true that if their children had passion, the results would still be better, if they didn't have passion, it would be difficult to continue and succeed.
