The workshop was attended by scientists and managers from universities, research institutes, state management agencies on intellectual property, businesses, and intellectual property representatives…
In the opening session, the workshop heard the introductory report presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Van Hai (Head of the Intellectual Property Department, Faculty of Management Science, University of Social Sciences and Humanities).

Associate Professor Tran Van Nam - Head of the Faculty of Law, National Economics University, delivered a speech at the conference.
The report states that Vietnam joined the WTO in 2007, but to date, the pace of reform and integration of the Vietnamese economy has remained quite slow. With its participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) on October 4, 2015, Vietnam can hope to take a new step on the path of reform, establishing a truly market economy and building a genuinely competitive economy.
Given the scale of the member economies and the trade liberalization provisions of the Agreement, joining the TPP significantly facilitates the enhancement of Vietnam's economic position, at least in Southeast Asia, in terms of economic growth, trade, and attracting FDI. However, Vietnam faces considerable challenges, among which the TPP's intellectual property protection requirements are much stricter than those of the WTO. These include increased protection of intellectual property rights for inventions, copyrights, and trademarks, which could lead to higher drug prices and create a healthcare burden for a developing economy like Vietnam. Furthermore, intellectual property protection measures related to biology also impact agriculture, causing the prices of agricultural chemicals such as veterinary drugs and fertilizers to increase significantly, leading to higher costs and reduced efficiency in agricultural production in general.

The report emphasizes that, considering both the need for economic reform and the promotion of economic growth, the process of deeper integration into the global economy cannot be delayed. The question is what Vietnam needs to do in the face of the challenges and opportunities regarding intellectual property so that Vietnam's path to international trade in the coming period achieves more positive results. This is also the main content and objective of the workshop.Opportunities and challenges regarding intellectual property as Vietnam participates in international trade.".
