The key conference of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, took place on May 30, 2014, in Cua Lo, Nghe An.

Following the opening ceremony, the Conference heard the Report summarizing the 2013-2014 academic year and the Directions and Tasks for the 2014-2015 academic year, presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim (Vice Rector of the University).

This year's preliminary report specifically outlined the achievements in all aspects of the University's activities during the 2013-2014 academic year, including: undergraduate and postgraduate training; scientific research; personnel management; financial planning; infrastructure development; foreign relations and international cooperation; innovation in university governance and administrative reform; development of information and communication technology applications; quality assurance and development of a quality culture; inspection and legal affairs; political and ideological work, emulation and commendation; student affairs; and national defense and security. In each area, existing shortcomings and their causes were also analyzed in detail to find solutions for the next academic year.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim, Vice Rector of the University, is presenting the report summarizing the 2013-2014 academic year and outlining the direction and tasks for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Furthermore, the report also focused on highlighting the main directions, tasks, and solutions to be implemented in the upcoming academic year, 2014-2015, with the theme: Continuing innovation - pioneering - quality - discipline. This was the content that attracted the most contributions from delegates, scientists, and the guidance of Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

The school's financial issues for 2013 were also reported to the conference by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa (Vice Rector of the school).

At the meeting, the conference also heard Associate Professor Pham Quang Minh (Vice Rector of the University) present a report on the results of one year of building a research university. According to the statistical report on the contents based on the evaluation standards, the total score for the 2013-2014 academic year was 622 points, achieving level 1 in the orientation of becoming a research university.

On behalf of the leadership of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Professor Nguyen Huu Duc (Vice Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi) highly appreciated the achievements of the School in the past academic year, and welcomed the directions that the School has set for the upcoming academic year 2014-2015.

In the afternoon, the conference continued to listen to and discuss reports: a report on doctoral training for faculty and staff at the university and a report on the university's foreign relations over the past five years (2009-2014); and a report on the project to establish the Institute of Culture and Arts.

Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh, Secretary of the Party Committee and Rector of the University, gave directives at the conference.

In concluding the conference, Professor Nguyen Van Khanh emphasized several issues that the university needs to pay attention to in the coming period:

- In the coming academic year, not only the University of Social Sciences and Humanities but the entire Vietnamese higher education system will implement Central Resolution 8, fundamentally and comprehensively reforming education and training. Given this situation, how will the University orient its development? All these issues need to be specifically defined in the University's development strategy.

- In the upcoming academic year, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in particular, and other universities in general, will begin implementing their tasks and plans for the 2014-2015 academic year amidst significant changes in the domestic, regional, and global context. This will have a significant impact on the University's development orientation.

- The upcoming academic year also marks the transition to a new term for the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. This is a very significant event impacting the development of the University.

Regarding the proposal to establish the Institute of Culture and Arts, Professor Nguyen Van Khanh also agreed with most of the opinions expressed at the conference, supporting the principle of establishing the Institute of Culture and Arts within the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. According to the Professor, the establishment of the Institute of Culture and Arts will contribute to integrating the university's strengths, diversifying training programs, and enhancing the university's position in the current context of integration and competition.
