International Scientific Conference "Research and Teaching Linguistics: Theoretical and Practical Issues"

Attending the workshop, on the side of research institutions and management institutes, there were Prof. Nguyen Van Hiep - Director of the Institute of Linguistics, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Le Quang Thiem - President of the Vietnam Linguistics Association, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khang - President of the Hanoi Linguistics Association, Prof. Dr. Tran Ngoc Them - Chairman of the Council of Language and Foreign Language Titles, Prof. Dr. Do Viet Hung - Vice President of Hanoi National University of Education; on the side of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, there was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Vice President of the University; on the side of the Faculty of Linguistics, there was Nguyen Van Chinh - Head of the Faculty of Linguistics; along with veteran teachers, scientists, researchers, lecturers and students of the Faculty.

The conference was organized with the aim of creating opportunities for domestic and foreign scientists to meet, exchange research content on linguistics teaching and present their new research results. This is also a good opportunity to develop cooperation, research, language and culture teaching between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and universities in the region and the world. The conference is a highlight marking the development of the Linguistics industry in general and the Faculty of Linguistics in particular.

In his opening speech at the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan (Vice Principal of the University) emphasized the importance and appeal of linguistics, as a science that is both academic and deeply practical. This is demonstrated by the telling figures of the Faculty of Linguistics, a leading unit of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. By 2015, the Faculty of Linguistics had trained more than 1,500 bachelors, more than 400 masters and 130 doctors in Linguistics, Vietnamese linguistics, and languages ​​and cultures of ethnic minorities in Vietnam. Currently, if there are 800-1,000 students coming to study short-term at the University each year, the Faculty of Linguistics has contributed half - about 500 students. Therefore, the Linguistics industry is also attractive in terms of training, serving the country's international integration requirements. The Vice President also sent his best wishes to all staff, lecturers and students of the Faculty on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Hanoi National University and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Faculty of Linguistics.

After the opening speech, the conference held a plenary session chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Chinh and Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Hiep with the following 3 presentations: "Communication of Vietnamese people today with social stratification (Some general issues and exploratory survey)" by Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Khang - Institute of Linguistics, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences), "Structure and semantics of proverbs in official duties (Based on short story materials and theory)" by Professor, Dr. Do Thi Kim Lien (Faculty of Literature - Vinh University), "Are word classes typological or universal? (Some approaches to word classes in linguistic geometry)" by Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Con (Faculty of Linguistics - University of Social Sciences and Humanities).

After the plenary session, the workshop continued with 3 sub-committees:

Subcommittee 1: “Teaching linguistics, Vietnamese linguistics and Vietnamese language” with some papers such as: “The importance of discourse analysis in language teaching and learning”, “Descriptive linguistics and aesthetics in teaching second and foreign languages”, “Integrating language and culture in teaching folk literature works in high schools”, “On designing a Vietnamese phonetics teaching program for foreigners”….

Panel 2: “Issues of linguistics and Vietnamese linguistics” with some papers such as: “Further discussion on the role of Vietnamese function words in relation to predicates in the descriptive semantic structure of sentences”, “Ferdinand de Saussure and his views on the position of native speakers”, “Differences in the center of ancient and modern Vietnamese noun phrases compared to today”, “Decoding the meaning of connotations in buying and selling communication”…

Subcommittee 3: “Linguistic issues of Vietnamese and regional ethnic groups” with a number of papers such as: “Benefits of analyzing words in ‘Mo muong’ of the Muong people in Vietnam”, “Adjectives indicating colors in Vietnamese, English, Russian”, “Structuralism and the study of anthropological linguistics: Trying to analyze some cases of taboos on animal names in languages”, “Comparing Vietnamese and Japanese phonetics and the problem of phonetic interference”…
