On October 13, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities organized an exchange program with the topic “Learning methods at university level”. The guests participating in the program were lecturers from many different Faculties and Departments who answered students’ concerns and questions about learning methods at university level; at the same time, they shared experiences, skills, and necessary methods to help new students learn effectively. The first two guests of the program are Dr. Nguyen Quang Lieu (Head of the Department of Politics and Student Affairs) and MSc. Trinh Le Anh (Deputy Head of the Faculty of Tourism Studies).
Differences in learning methods between high school and university
Answering the question about the difference in learning methods between high school and university, Dr. Tran Quang Lieu quoted Professor Tran Van Giau: "University is self-study". According to Dr. Nguyen Quang Lieu, self-study means that students turn the teacher's training process into their own self-training process. The teacher plays the role of showing students the direction and approach to the problem. During lectures, unlike high school, teachers write down the topics clearly, while in university, they only state the chapters. Therefore, it requires students to have high concentration, know how to filter and choose in the process of taking notes. Therefore, it is not necessary to write down all the teacher's ideas to get a high score. Besides, there are many other factors such as: finding documents to read, going to the library, listening to lectures in class...

Dr. Nguyen Quang Lieu emphasized that there is no common learning method for all scientific fields. In particular, with the current credit-based training method that the school is applying, it is important that students build for themselves a reasonable scientific timetable. When registering for courses, you must know your own strength, know the structure, and divide your time reasonably. Make a schedule for the whole day, including time in class and at home. The important thing is to try to follow that schedule.
Benefits of discussion
Some other opinions are concerned that the credit-based learning method requires students to discuss a lot. So what do students need to prepare for discussion hours? Regarding this issue, Master Trinh Le Anh shared: You should consider learning as a path with many difficulties and challenges. And there, the teacher is just a companion. The teacher himself is not a "handbook", but through the teacher, students can access professional treasures, treasures of documents, and textbooks. In particular, the teacher will help students have effective learning methods.

During discussion time, the teacher is the one who raises the issue and shows how to approach the issue. Students need to be bold, freely discuss and express themselves. The biggest limitation of most students today is: they are afraid to speak up, afraid of making mistakes, so they are reserved. Discussion time is for students, students have the right to be proactive, discuss, and give their personal opinions.
How to access the resources?
In the current trend of integration and development, the source of documents for studying is no longer a difficult problem. However, the biggest difficulty for some students today is wondering about how to approach and select textbooks, reference materials, course outlines, etc. Regarding this issue, Dr. Nguyen Quang Lieu shared: Students should find sources of documents and textbooks according to the guidance of teachers, teachers will arrange the source of documents for them in order of priority. The best and most effective way to study is to regularly pay attention to lectures, learn each part, each lesson and master that lesson.
The guests in the second part of the program are MSc. Pham Quoc Thanh (Department of Political Science) and MSc. Lam Minh Chau (Department of Anthropology).
Lots of questions about how to learn a foreign language
“Learn from people around you, from teachers, from friends… Learn anywhere, anytime. And it is better to study 1 hour with quality than 10 hours without quality.”— MSc. Lam Minh Chau
How to learn a foreign language quickly and effectively is one of the issues that new students are most concerned about when starting to study in a new environment that requires more foreign language skills. "This is a concern of many students" - MSc. Lam Minh Chau expressed his sympathy. Based on the experiences accumulated in the process of learning foreign languages, the 24-year-old lecturer shared his secret to success:
- Learning a foreign language requires a lot of time investment.
- Learning foreign languages must be practiced in real life.
- Do more exercises
And learning a foreign language is learning for your future. Sharing about the difficulties in learning a foreign language, Master Pham Quoc Thanh said: Learning a foreign language requires perseverance and practice speaking a lot. Set goals, have passion and motivation, listen and share with teachers and friends. Master Pham Quoc Thanh also noted that students need to cultivate experience, knowledge and soft skills right from when they are still in school to create many career opportunities when they graduate... It can be said that the sharing and suggestions about how to study at university level from the guests have initially resolved the concerns and worries of the students. Especially the new students of K55 who have only had 1 month to get acquainted with the university lecture hall.
