Modernity and religious life in Vietnam today
An international scientific seminar on the theme "Modernity and Religious Life in Vietnam Today" was organized by the Center for Contemporary Religious Studies on December 2nd and 3rd, 2011.The seminar was attended by scientists from research centers, institutes, universities, and academies both domestically and internationally. The introductory report, titled “Religion and Modernity: Some Theoretical and Practical Issues,” by Professor Dr. Do Quang Hung (University of Social Sciences and Humanities), focused on the theoretical discussion of religion and modernity, and modernity in relation to religion. Through numerous experiences and theoretical debates, the main content has gradually been identified, encompassing several meanings: modernity as secularization, modernity from a scientific and technological perspective, and modernity from the perspective of a rule-of-law state. According to Professor Dr. Do Quang Hung, modernity and its relationship with religious life manifest in three dimensions: dismantling the form of political power based on religion; definitively separating state power from the church; and establishing a rational, democratic, and rule-of-law state. Modernity and religion also lead to the following implications from the perspective of religious life itself: religions adapting to the secular state environment; religious modernization; internal restructuring of each religion; and restructuring of the religious system. Following the plenary session, the symposium was divided into four subcommittees to discuss issues concerning modernity and religious life in Vietnam today: - Subcommittee 1: “Modernity and Religious Life: General Issues” - Subcommittee 2: “Modernity and Buddhism” - Subcommittee 3: “Modernity and Christianity” - Subcommittee 4: “Modernity and Other Specific Religions: Issues to be Raised”

Religion is an integral part of social life, playing a significant role in the cultural, ethical, and other aspects of the country's life. Vietnam currently has 13 religions with over 20 million followers, and many other traditional beliefs are still existing and developing. This seminar contributes to clarifying issues concerning religious life today, especially in Vietnam. At the same time, the seminar contributes to improving the effectiveness of research and teaching in religious studies and many other disciplines at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
