Representing the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Thanh Truong - Vice Rector of the university, representatives from the Faculty of Linguistics, representatives from various functional departments, and lecturers and postgraduate students from both within and outside the country.
In his opening remarks at the conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Thanh Truong, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, expressed his sincere gratitude to the researchers for their scientific contributions that made the conference a success. The Vice Rector shared that VNU-USSH is a member of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi – a university ranked among the top in prestigious international rankings and a leading university in Vietnam in training in the social sciences. In particular, the university always focuses on investing in and promoting research activities in the social sciences, including geography, to contribute to affirming the university's position on the scientific map both domestically and internationally.

According to the Vice Rector, the 5th International Conference on Asian Geographic Linguistics is a relatively new thematic conference, attracting particular attention in Vietnam with the emergence of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Therefore, the conference will contribute to promoting the application of information and geographical technology achievements in linguistic research, Vietnamese linguistics, and the mapping of Vietnamese languages/dialects. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Thanh Truong affirmed that the results obtained from the conference will also be applied to linguistic research and teaching at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and many other training and research institutions.

The conference took place over two days, from May 4th to May 5th, 2023, in both in-person and online formats, maximizing opportunities for information exchange among scholars, with 21 high-quality reports and studies on geography, language, and people. Of these, VNU-USSH contributed four in-depth studies:
1. The geographical distribution of Mon-Khmer language terms denoting "person" in present-day Southeast Asia contributes to proving the original location (homeland) of the Lac Viet people – Prof. Dr. Tran Tri Doi, Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
2. Characteristics and geographical distribution of maternal kinship variants in the Son Tay dialect (Hanoi) – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Cam Lan, Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
3. Geographical distribution of place names containing the element "kẻ" in the Northern Delta - Dr. Truong Nhat Vinh, Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
4. Tones as a criterion for identifying a dialect/language: the case of Tai Yo through the geographical distribution of tones – Sam Cong Danh, Graduate Student, Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

The International Conference on Asian Linguistics (ICAG) is a series aimed at providing a forum to bring together scholars interested in geolinguistics to share new findings and research results. The scope of ICAG's focus includes (1) traditional dialects or dialectal studies within a language or language family, (2) geographical studies encompassing sociolinguistic perspectives, such as perspectives on age, gender, and class distinctions, and (3) typological studies of the geographical distribution of languages.
ICAG has organized the following workshops:
• ICAG-1, 2012 at Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo, Japan;
• ICAG-2, 2014 at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand;
• ICAG-3, 2016 at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Cambodia; and
