University of Social Sciences and Humanities and Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences: Cooperation in Bilateral Research and Training

On May 24, 2023, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Thanh Truong - Vice President of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU (VNU-USSH) had a meeting and worked with a delegation from the Academy of Social Sciences of Yunnan Province, China.

Attending the meeting, on behalf of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH), there were Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Thanh Truong - Vice Rector of the school; Dr. Pham Hoang Hung - Head of the Department of Cooperation and Development, and representatives from the Departments of International Studies, Oriental Studies, History and the Center for Chinese Studies. The delegation of the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences (China) was led by Vice President of the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences, Prof. Shen Xiangxing, along with Prof. Ma Yong, Director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Dr. You Gongsheng, Deputy Head of the Department of Scientific Research Management, MSc. Liang Xiaofen - Deputy Director of the Institute of Religious Studies, Dr. Kong Zhijian, Institute of Lao Studies and Ms. He Linxi - Department of International Cooperation.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Thanh Truong shares the strengths in training and research of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU
At the meeting, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Thanh Truong said that with nearly 80 years of history and tradition, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU has affirmed its position as the leading university in Vietnam in research and teaching in the field of social sciences and has made many important marks in world university rankings. The school has many strategic cooperative relationships and signed agreements with many prestigious international universities and organizations, including more than 60 prestigious universities and major research institutes in China, spanning cities such as Guangdong, Yunnan, Shanghai, etc.

The reception and working session was attended by leaders of the school's affiliated units.
Regarding cooperation in the field of education and training, in the last 5 years alone, the University has received about 800 international students from China. In 2023 alone, there were nearly 200 Chinese students participating in courses on Vietnamese language and culture organized at the Faculty of Linguistics, Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, and studying and researching in specialized faculties such as Literature, History, Sociology, International Studies, etc. These impressive achievements are thanks to maintaining the quality of traditional training cooperation programs such as 2+2, 3+1, 3.5+0.5, etc. The University also focuses on building new and attractive teaching orientations with flexible time frames and curricula, suitable for many subjects. In particular, in 2023, the School has developed many short-term training programs with many topics and rich content, ready to welcome international students in general and Chinese students in particular to study and experience.
In the field of scientific research, with more than 70% of lecturers holding a PhD degree and 27% of lecturers holding the title of Associate Professor or higher out of a total of nearly 600 staff and lecturers, many of whom are leading domestic experts in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities research. The school has collaborated with many partners from China to organize many scientific research topics of mutual interest, as well as organize international scientific conferences, publish research products in specialized journals, etc.

In response to the warm welcome from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities during his first visit to Vietnam, Vice President of the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences, Prof. Shen Xiangxing, expressed his deep gratitude to the school. The delegation also highly appreciated the achievements and contributions of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to the education and social construction of the country, clearly feeling the profound history and impression of the school's attraction to students from China. He said that the number of 800 Chinese students studying at the school is a clear demonstration of the quality of training as well as the school's open relationship with Chinese partner universities.
Yunnan Provincial Academy of Social Sciences is a provincial-level comprehensive research institution of social sciences and philosophy under Yunnan Province, established in 1980 with three key research directions including ethnic and border issues; economic development and regional studies of South Asia and Southeast Asia. Currently, the Institute has 11 research departments, including the South Asia Research Department, Southeast Asia Research Department, Ethnology Research Department, Sociology Research Department, Ethnic Culture Research Department, Rural Development Research Department, History and Culture Research Department, Marxism-Leninism Research Department, Religion Research Department, Philosophy Research Department, and Economics Research Department. The Institute has three specialized journals including “Yunnan Journal of Social Sciences”, “Journal of Southeast Asia and South Asia Studies”, and “Chinese Geography Journal”. Through the exchange process, it can be seen that the expectations and directions of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities as well as the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences have clear similarities. On this basis, along with the exchange of students and culture between the two countries, Mr. Shen Xiangxing - Vice President of the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences believes that this will be the beginning of long-term cooperation and exchange between the two sides.
Following the meeting, representatives of the two sides' professional units had a lively exchange of professional knowledge, as well as research directions of mutual interest. Concluding the meeting, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Thanh Truong and Professor Shen Xiangxing agreed to continue discussing and signing a Framework Cooperation Agreement during the visit to Yunnan Province by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in June this year to create a legal framework for other specific cooperation between the two sides in the future.
