The Department of Ethnology was established at the Faculty of History, Hanoi National University in 1960. In 2004, the Department was renamed the Department of Anthropology under the Faculty of History. In 2010, the Department of Anthropology became a department under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Over the past 5 years, the Department of Anthropology has achieved many achievements in various fields, contributing to the construction and development of one of the basic majors, holding an important position at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in particular and the country in general. Facing the new development requirements of the major, the President of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities signed a decision to establish the Department of Anthropology and three departments under the Department, and at the same time, perfected the administrative and professional management staff of the Department for the 2015-2020 term. Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Suu was appointed to the position of Head of the Department of Anthropology and Dr. Nguyen Truong Giang was appointed to the position of Vice Head of the Department of Anthropology for the first term of the Department.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Kim - Party Committee Secretary, Vice Principal of the School presented the decision to establish the Faculty of Anthropology to Associate Professor, Dr. Lam Ba Nam - Chairman of the Faculty's Science and Training Council.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Kim presented appointment decisions to the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Anthropology for the 2015-2020 term.
On behalf of the Party Committee and the Board of Directors of the School, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Kim shared the joy with the Board of Directors and the staff of the Faculty of Anthropology, and assigned the task: "The Faculty of Anthropology must strive to become one of the leading basic scientific units, developing in the direction of interdisciplinary and international integration".
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Kim gave a speech assigning tasks to the Faculty of Anthropology: The Faculty must become one of the leading basic scientific units, developing in an interdisciplinary and international integration direction.
To achieve the above goal, the Faculty of Anthropology needs to have a strategy in staff training to develop a team of experts and lecturers with capacity and qualifications; continue to maintain and further expand relationships with research institutes, museums, management agencies, political organizations, professional societies, etc.
In training activities, the Faculty needs to continue to innovate towards international integration, prioritizing the internationalization of some subjects taught in English; at the same time, promote innovation in teaching, testing and evaluation methods; have a plan to compile and perfect the system of learning materials, especially basic and core textbooks, and outstanding monographs to continue to affirm the position and main professional orientation of the Faculty.
Regarding scientific research, the Faculty needs to further promote research activities in the direction of serving training, linking research and training with practical life, with trends and general changes of the country; focus resources on building a number of major research topics and projects in which the Faculty has potential and strengths; increase the quantity and quality of scientific works published internationally.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Faculty for the 2015-2020 term, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Suu expressed his gratitude to generations of scientists and teachers who have devoted their hearts and efforts to building a solid tradition of the field of study, creating the foundation for the establishment and development of the Faculty today. The establishment of the Faculty of Anthropology is a great achievement of a process of building, transforming and developing the major of Ethnology into the major of Anthropology, the Department of Ethnology under the Faculty of History into the Faculty of Anthropology of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Suu also affirmed the determination of the new Board of Directors to work with the Faculty to continuously innovate, improve the quality of research, training, expand cooperation, and bring Anthropology and the Faculty of Anthropology to a new stage of development, in a new position. The goal of the Faculty is to build prestigious and high-quality research, training and policy consulting products, and integrate more deeply with the region and the world.
Prof. Dr. People's Teacher Phan Huu Dat gave a congratulatory speech: the Department of Anthropology of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities must become the core for the development of the country's Anthropology, aiming to build an Anthropology of Vietnam, by Vietnam and for Vietnam.
Senior scientist and teacher - Prof. Dr. People's Teacher Phan Huu Dat - shared his joy and emotion when attending this event. He is one of the people who contributed to building the foundation for the Ethnology and Anthropology major of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and witnessed the process of building and growing this major, from when it was just an Ethnology group, Ethnology professional groups, and later became an independent Ethnology professional group at Hanoi National University; from when it was a department within the Faculty of History, and later separated to become an independent, separate scientific major.
He also said that Vietnamese Ethnology has existed for half a century with many important achievements, especially in the study of Vietnamese culture and people. The transition from Ethnology to Anthropology is an inevitable requirement, in line with the world trend, and at the same time allows researchers to have more conditions to expand their research contents, integrate with the world, and better serve the practical tasks assigned by the Party and the State.
On this meaningful occasion, Prof. Dr. People's Teacher Phan Huu Dat wished the Faculty of Anthropology to develop more and more strongly and sustainably and expected that the Anthropology Department of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities will become the core for the development of the Anthropology Department of the country, towards building an Anthropology Department of Vietnam, by Vietnam and for Vietnam.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Suu presented flowers to express gratitude to generations of teachers and scientists who have contributed to the construction and development of the Faculty.
