Announcement of the decision to establish the Department of Anthropology

The Department of Ethnology was established within the Faculty of History, Hanoi University in 1960. In 2004, the Department was renamed the Department of Anthropology, under the Faculty of History. In 2010, the Department of Anthropology became a department directly under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Over the past five years, the Department of Anthropology has achieved many accomplishments in various fields, contributing to the development of one of the fundamental and important disciplines at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in particular and in the country in general. Facing the new development requirements of the discipline, the Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities signed a decision to establish the Faculty of Anthropology and three departments within the Faculty, while simultaneously strengthening the administrative and professional management staff of the Faculty for the 2015-2020 term. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Suu was appointed Head of the Faculty of Anthropology and Dr. Nguyen Truong Giang was appointed Deputy Head of the Faculty of Anthropology for the first term of the Faculty.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim - Secretary of the Party Committee, Vice Rector of the University, presented the decision to establish the Faculty of Anthropology to Associate Professor Dr. Lam Ba Nam - Chairman of the Faculty's Scientific and Training Council.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim presented the appointment decisions to the Dean's Board of the Faculty of Anthropology for the term 2015-2020.

On behalf of the Party Committee and the School's Board of Directors, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim shared his joy with the Dean and staff of the Faculty of Anthropology, and assigned the task: "The Faculty of Anthropology must strive to become one of the leading basic science units, developing in an interdisciplinary direction and integrating internationally."

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Kim gave a speech assigning tasks to the Department of Anthropology: The department must become one of the leading basic science units, developing in an interdisciplinary direction and integrating internationally.

To achieve the above objectives, the Department of Anthropology needs a strategy for staff training to develop a team of competent and qualified full-time experts and lecturers; and to continue maintaining and expanding relationships with research institutes, museums, management agencies, political and social professional organizations, etc.

In its training activities, the Faculty needs to continue innovating towards international integration, prioritizing the internationalization of some courses taught in English; at the same time, promoting innovation in teaching methods, testing, and evaluation; and planning to compile and improve the system of learning materials, especially basic and core textbooks, and outstanding monographs to further affirm the position and main professional orientation of the Faculty.

Regarding scientific research, the Faculty needs to further promote research activities that serve training, linking research and training with practical life, with the general trends and changes of the country; focus resources on developing more large-scale research topics and projects in which the Faculty has potential and strengths; and increase the quantity and quality of scientific works published internationally.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Suu - Head of the Department of Anthropology, stated: The department will aim to develop high-quality and reputable research, training, and policy consulting services, and integrate more deeply with the region and internationally.

On behalf of the Faculty Board for the 2015-2020 term, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Suu expressed gratitude to the generations of scientists and educators who have dedicated their hearts and efforts to building the solid tradition of the field, creating the foundation for the establishment and development of the Faculty today. The establishment of the Faculty of Anthropology is a great achievement of a process of building, transforming, and developing the Ethnology specialization into the Anthropology specialization, and the Ethnology Department of the Faculty of History into the Faculty of Anthropology of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Suu also affirmed the determination of the new Dean's Board to strive together with the Faculty to continuously innovate, improve the quality of research and training, expand cooperative relationships, and bring the field of Anthropology and the Faculty of Anthropology into a new phase of development, on a new level. The goal of the Faculty is to build reputable and high-quality research, training, and policy consulting services, and to integrate more deeply with the region and internationally.

Professor Phan Huu Dat, PhD, People's Teacher, delivered a congratulatory speech to the Faculty, stating that the Anthropology department of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities must become the core for the development of the country's Anthropology field, aiming to build an Anthropology department of Vietnam, by Vietnam, and for Vietnam.

Veteran scientist and educator, Professor Phan Huu Dat, shared his joy and emotion at being present at this event. He is one of the pioneers in laying the foundation for the Ethnology and Anthropology departments of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and witnessed the development and growth of this field of study, from its beginnings as a small group of Ethnologists, then specialized Ethnology teams, and later as an independent Ethnology team at Hanoi University; from its time as a department within the Faculty of History, to its later separation into an independent and distinct scientific discipline.

He also stated that Vietnamese ethnology has existed for half a century with many important achievements, especially in the study of Vietnamese culture and people. The shift from ethnology to anthropology is an inevitable requirement, in line with global trends, and at the same time allows researchers to have more opportunities to expand their research content, integrate with the world, and better serve the practical tasks assigned by the Party and the State.

On this significant occasion, Professor Phan Huu Dat wished the Faculty of Anthropology continued strong and sustainable development, and expressed his hope that the Anthropology department of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities would become the core of the development of the country's anthropology, aiming to build an anthropology discipline of Vietnam, by Vietnam, and for Vietnam.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Suu presented flowers to express gratitude to the generations of teachers and scientists who contributed to the building and development of the Faculty.
