Short-term Basic Photography Training Program

On April 24, 2023, the President of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities signed Decision No. 1340 on promulgating the Basic Photography Short-term Training Program developed by the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training. Specifically as follows:

1. General information about the training program

- Training program name: Basic Photography
- Training subjects:
+ Students studying or graduated from University or College, want to work in the field of journalism and media
+ People who need to equip themselves with knowledge and skills in photography.
+ People who are working in the field of journalism and media but do not have a degree in the right field, need to supplement their professional certificate to complete their application for recruitment/promotion to civil servant positions.
+ All people interested in and love the field of journalism and media
- Training unit: Lecturers from the Institute of Journalism and Communication (University of Social Sciences and Humanities) in combination with experienced journalists from press and media agencies.
- Certificate name: Basic Photography
(English name: Basic Photography Skills)
- Certificate issuing unit: University of Social Sciences & Humanities

2. Training objectives

The Journalism and Media Training Program equips students with basic and necessary knowledge in the field of photography. After the course, students will have the expertise and confidence to practice photography in media activities and life.

3. Program output standards

3.1. About knowledge
- Grasp general knowledge of photography and photojournalism
- Master knowledge of photojournalism types and genres of photographic works
- Understand the methods of creating photographic works
3.2. About skills
- Professional skills: Proficient in approaching and performing professional photography tasks.
- Personal skills: Ability to work independently, use equipment and technical means to create works.
- Teamwork skills: Team coordination skills, always listening and respecting members' opinions, ensuring work efficiency and quality of work.
3.3. On moral qualities:
Practice professional ethics and comply with legal regulations on photography.
3.4. Job position and professional development opportunities
- Learners can take on the job of a specialist or photo editor working at agencies and businesses; a position in charge of content management or image creation for websites or internal communication publications of organizations and businesses; a job as a content creator on mass media...

4. Structure of the training program:

Total accumulated hours: 45 periods, including:
- Theory hours: 30 periods
- Number of practice hours: 10 periods

- Practice on composition and mastering photographic lighting
4 Basic photography skills: portraits, everyday life, event photography 15 - Basic image classification
- Shooting skills with basic elements: Recording moment (time to press the shutter), Emotion, Curiosity, Perspective, Operational plan, Methods to build visual thinking
- Practice photography in basic genres
5 Basic photo editing with Photoshop and Lightroom 10 - Introduce popular photo editing technologies and applications
- Experience in photo editing using Photoshop and Lightroom applications
- Practice basic photo editing
Total 45  

The topics are built on the basis of the Photojournalism subject in the undergraduate training program in Journalism.
Topics can be adjusted and changed up to 20% of the total course duration based on professional practice and student needs.

6. Form of testing and evaluating course learning outcomes:

After 45 lessons providing basic foundational knowledge, students will complete a final exam which will be a series of photo essays or portraits. Students will receive a graduation certificate when they meet the following requirements:
- Attend at least 80% of class hours
- Achieve at least 5/10 points on the final exam.
