Short-term Basic Photography Training Program

On April 24, 2023, the Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities signed Decision No. 1340 on the promulgation of the short-term Basic Photography Training Program developed by the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training. Specifically, it is as follows:

1. General information about the training program

- Program name: Basic Photography
- Target audience:
+ Students currently studying or who have graduated from university or college and wish to work in the field of journalism and media.
+ Individuals who need to acquire knowledge and skills in photography.
+ Individuals currently working in the field of journalism and media but lacking a relevant degree need to obtain professional certifications to complete their application for recruitment/promotion to civil servant positions.
+ Anyone interested in or passionate about journalism and media
- Training unit: Lecturers from the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training (University of Social Sciences and Humanities) in collaboration with experienced journalists from media organizations.
- Certificate name: Basic Photography

2. Training Objectives

The Journalism and Media Training Program equips learners with fundamental and essential knowledge in the field of photography. After the course, learners will have the expertise and confidence to practice photography in media activities and daily life.

3. Program learning outcomes

3.1. Regarding knowledge
- Possess a solid understanding of the general principles of photography and photojournalism.
- Possess a thorough understanding of different types of photojournalism and photographic genres.
- Understand the methods of creating photographic works.
3.2. Regarding skills
- Professional skills: Proficient in approaching and executing professional photography tasks.
- Personal skills: Possesses the ability to work independently and use technical equipment and tools to create artwork.
- Teamwork skills: The ability to coordinate within a team, always listen to and respect the opinions of team members, ensuring work efficiency and product quality.
3.3. Regarding moral qualities:
Cultivate professional ethics and comply with legal regulations regarding photographic practices.
3.4. Job position and professional development opportunities
- Graduates can work as specialists or photo editors in agencies and businesses; positions responsible for content management or image creation for websites or internal communication publications of organizations and businesses; or as content creators on mass media platforms…

4. Structure of the training program:

Total accumulated hours: 45 lessons, including:
-Number of theoretical hours: 30 lessons
-Number of practical hours: 10 lessons

- Practice adjusting lighting in real-world situations.
3 Principles of composition in photography and mastering light. 10 - Fundamental principles of color and light: Color theory, Mastering light, Some suggestions for special conditions.
Composition in photography
- Lines, shapes
- Style, cut
- Practice composition and mastering photographic lighting.
4 Basic photography skills for various genres: portraits, everyday life, and events. 15 - Basic image classification
- Photography skills with fundamental elements: Capturing the moment (the opportune time to press the shutter), Emotion, Curiosity, Perspective, Operational plan, Methods for developing visual thinking.
- Practice photography using basic genres.
5 Basic photo editing using Photoshop and Lightroom 10 - Introducing common photo editing technologies and applications.
- Experience in photo editing using Photoshop and Lightroom applications.
- Practice basic photo editing

These topics are developed based on the Photojournalism course in the undergraduate Journalism program.
The topics may be adjusted or modified by up to 20% of the total course duration based on professional practice and student needs.

6. Forms of assessment and evaluation of learning outcomes for the course:

After 45 lessons providing fundamental knowledge, students will complete a final exam consisting of a series of photo essays or portrait photographs. Students will receive a graduation certificate upon meeting the following requirements:
- Attend at least 80% of class time.
- Achieve a minimum score of 5/10 on the final exam.
