Research on parents' perceptions of mental health care for children with mental disorders provides further scientific and practical basis for the fields of health psychology, clinical psychology, and medical psychology regarding childhood mental illness/disorders, and child mental health care for the target group, namely the children's parents. The thesis systematically compiled literature on parental perceptions of the illness and healthcare. Simultaneously, it developed concepts of mental health, childhood mental disorders, mental health care, and perceptions of mental health care. The thesis offers recommendations to improve awareness of mental health care among parents in the current context.

3.1.2. In practice

The thesis points out that parents' understanding of their children's illnesses is limited and incomplete. Their knowledge of the disease is mainly focused on knowing its name, lacking awareness of its causes, symptoms, treatment, the healthcare provider, treatment duration, and therapies; and they underestimate the child's potential. Furthermore, parents' awareness of care is primarily focused on academic and physical care rather than emotional support when their child is ill. The thesis also identifies and predicts the relationship between parental awareness and their caregiving behavior. The better parents' awareness of the illness and its caregiving, the more frequent their caregiving behavior towards their children. In addition, socio-demographic variables such as educational level and marital status are also correlated and can predict parental caregiving behavior towards their children. Experiments on the impact of psychological education on parents also showed that parents' perceptions of their child's illness and how to care for them improved after each intervention.

3.2. Conclusion

This dissertation has reviewed research trends worldwide and in Vietnam regarding parents' perceptions of mental health disorders, mental health care, and the effectiveness of mental health care programs. Building upon and systematizing theoretical issues from domestic and international research, the dissertation clarifies the concepts of: mental health, childhood mental disorders, mental health care; and perceptions of mental health care (Chapters 1 and 2).

Analyzing and evaluating parents' perceptions of their children's mental health disorders, their perceptions of mental health care for their children, and their caregiving activities with their children (Chapters 3 and 4).
