1. Purpose and scope of the thesis

* Research objectives:

- To learn about narrative theory and its application in literary studies in Vietnam.

- Learn about the writer Tô Hoài and his role and position in modern Vietnamese literature (including Vietnamese children's literature).

- Applying narrative theory to issues of structure, plot, narrative point of view, narrator, language, etc., in parallel with a narrative-cultural approach, to understand the narrative art that shapes the literary style of writer Tô Hoài.

* Research subjects:

- The representative prose works of writer Tô Hoài belong to three main genres: short stories (including short stories written for children), novels, and memoirs/autobiographies, such as:Homeland, Foreign Land, Ten Years, Old Stories of Hanoi, Oath of Allegiance, Poor House, The Mouse, The Debtor, Stories of Northwest Vietnam, Desert Island, Chu's House, Magic Crossbow, Old Stories of Hanoi, Dust on Whose Feet, Evening After Evening, One Hundred Fairy Tales, The Adventures of the Cricket...

2. Research methods used

- Main research method: Narrative studies - a method of studying the structure of narrative texts and related issues, especially the issues of structure, narrative point of view, the role of the narrator, etc.

- Interdisciplinary approach: Approaching the work from a cultural perspective - A direction of post-classical narratology, contributing to deciphering the work within the cultural context in which it was created, as well as issues of cultural sensibility and the author's methods of expressing that cultural sensibility.

- In addition, we will also incorporate some comparative, systematic, and statistical research methods to fulfill the scientific objectives of the dissertation.

3. Main results and conclusions

3.1. Main results

- An overview of the development and achievements of Narratology research, as well as the process of applying Narratology theory to literary research in Vietnam.

- An overview of the theory of structure in narrative works; the cultural approach in literary works; and the theory of point of view and narrator in literary works.

Applying narrative theory to the study of To Hoai's literary works:

+ Structural analysis: short stories, novels, memoirs, thereby highlighting the prominent features of To Hoai's artistic style in terms of genre, plot organization, and structural construction…

+ Survey across various cultural and sensory dimensions: regarding nature, society - customs, and people… Based on the socio-cultural context and cultural phenomena, highlight the cultural values ​​expressed in To Hoai's works, as well as the writer's philosophy of life and artistic conception.

+ The study examines the narrator and narrative point of view, the unique characteristics of the narrator's image, and the issue of shifting point of view…

3.2. Conclusion

- By applying theories of narrative studies, particularly in the art of plot organization and structural construction (from the perspective of classical narrative studies), and the issues of narrative point of view, narrative style, cultural sensibility, and delving deeper into the modes of expression and aesthetic characteristics of the narrative genre (from the perspective of post-classical narrative studies), the dissertation affirms the contributions of writer Tô Hoài to modern Vietnamese prose.

- Through generalizations and research, it can be seen that To Hoai's stories demonstrate the complex transformation of multiple "narrative roles" with many creative innovations in "narrative art," forming diversity in literary style. Applying narrative theory to the study of To Hoai's works not only contributes to clarifying the content and artistic value of To Hoai's stories scientifically in the light of narrative theory.

- This thesis initially explores common structural patterns in the short stories, novels, and memoirs/autobiographies of writer Tô Hoài, thereby revealing the diversity in the writer's art of constructing the structure of his works in various forms: psychological structure, logical-cause-and-effect structure, detailed structure, collage structure, character imagery structure, etc.

- Studying the cultural aspects in To Hoai's stories is a new approach, helping to clarify the author's portrait, his perspective, and his feelings about social life, as expressed through specific cultural and literary symbols, imagery, and signs. To Hoai rarely focuses on intensely antagonistic social conflicts; his cultural perception of society and customs is linked to the simple, everyday lives of rural people, traditional crafts, and colorful festivals, reflecting the life experience and cultural knowledge of a talented writer and journalist.
