10. Summary of thesis results:
Truc Lam Buddhism was born and flourished during the Tran Dynasty. Truc Lam Buddhism became the spiritual support for the Tran Dynasty kings and their subjects in building and defending the country; at the same time, it contributed to preserving and enriching the traditional culture of the nation.
However, by the time of the Later Le Dynasty, Truc Lam Buddhism had gradually faded away. Zen monks and nuns had to retreat to the mountains and forests to practice in seclusion, and the lineage had no clear continuity. In such a context, in the second half of the 17th century, an outstanding Zen master appeared, Chan Nguyen - Tue Dang. He was the one who made great contributions to the revival of Truc Lam Buddhism during the Tran Dynasty after many periods of stagnation. His successors, generations of students, continued the work he left behind. Thanks to that, the Truc Lam Zen lineage still flows until now.
Through analyzing the role of Zen master Chan Nguyen in the effort to revive Truc Lam Buddhist thought, revive scriptures, practice and revive Truc Lam Buddhist worshiping establishments during the Tran Dynasty, the thesis points out his great contribution to the revival of Truc Lam Buddhism during the Tran Dynasty in the 17th - 18th centuries. At the same time, the thesis also points out the significance of that revival for Vietnamese Buddhism and Vietnamese culture.
