Spreading the culture of proper conduct from the family to society.
Regarding this issue, cultural expert Nguyen Hung Vi, former lecturer at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), stated that for millennia, the family has always been the place that nurtures and transmits the beautiful cultural values and behaviors of Vietnamese people. Education is one of the fundamental and primary functions of the family. In reality, families that prioritize moral education, lifestyle, and character development tend to raise children who live ethically and healthily, and vice versa. Therefore, the care and education provided by each family have the greatest influence on the formation and development of each individual's personality, establishing standard values to create people who are beneficial to their families, communities, and society. Within each family, parents and grandparents must truly be role models for their children and grandchildren, spreading cultural values and behavior within the family as a springboard for societal progress.
However, nowadays, we face many pressing issues such as moral decay, pragmatic lifestyles, indifference, and conflicts and tensions both within families and in society at large.
Offering a solution to this problem, Mr. Vi suggested that it is necessary to promote the movement to build cultured families and civilized lifestyles. Attention should be paid to building cultured families and villages, including criteria such as the absence of domestic violence, alcohol abuse, gambling, and drug abuse, in order to recognize cultured families.
Every locality and every family needs to strive to limit and gradually eliminate pragmatic lifestyles, social evils, and domestic violence in social life, so that these evils do not continue to exist and persist in today's cultural life.
"It is necessary to strictly punish those who commit domestic violence in accordance with the regulations on administrative penalties in the field of preventing and combating domestic violence. At the same time, we must build sustainable family institutions to prevent domestic violence, and strengthen the leadership role of Party committees and local authorities at all levels, coordinating with agencies, departments, and organizations in implementing the prevention and combating of domestic violence and gender equality," Mr. Vi emphasized.
Overcoming the problem of focusing on achievements and formalism in family building.
According to cultural expert Nguyen Hung Vi, many families currently do not register for the "Culturally Advanced Residential Area" or "Culturally Advanced Family" emulation campaigns. Furthermore, due to the pursuit of achievements, there is often a tendency during evaluation meetings to "show off the good and hide the bad," thereby favoring individuals and groups to be honored as culturally advanced, avoiding speaking up or pointing out the shortcomings of neighbors for fear of offending them. Therefore, in a residential community, only a select few truly outstanding and exemplary families should be recognized and rewarded; this would be more valuable than having all households recognized as "culturally advanced families."
According to Dr. Khuat Thu Hong (Director of the Institute for Social Development Research), the statistics on domestic violence published recently do not fully reflect the reality, because there are still many cases that are silently endured, due to fear of "exposing their private matters" or "shame on the husband." Meanwhile, community awareness of this issue remains limited, and many people still believe that a husband slapping his wife a few times or parents beating their children are not the root causes of violence.
In particular, low awareness of gender equality, coupled with economic factors and social ills such as alcoholism, gambling, drug abuse, and prostitution, allows domestic violence to persist. Therefore, to address the root cause of domestic violence, it is necessary to further promote moral education and lifestyle within families; Party members and adults must set a good example for all family members to follow. When acts of domestic violence are detected, they should be dealt with through legal means to severely punish and deter them, rather than relying heavily on reconciliation.
Furthermore, the process of evaluating and recognizing "Culturally Exemplary Families" and outstanding families must adhere to the guidelines of higher authorities, and must necessarily be based on open, democratic evaluation and recognition by the entire community. The community should be encouraged to foster a spirit of solidarity, offer frank and sincere feedback, and ensure that families awarded the "Culturally Exemplary Family" title are truly outstanding.
It is important to understand that honoring cultured families is a core element of the "National Unity Movement for Building a Cultured Life in Residential Areas." Therefore, moral and lifestyle education is always crucial for building happy and progressive families, especially in an increasingly modern and developed society.
