Celebrating the Vietnamese language and culture through the 2023 Vietnamese public speaking competition for international students.

The preliminary round of the Northern region of the 2023 Vietnamese Public Speaking Contest for International Students in Vietnam, held at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi on October 28th, concluded with many profound impressions of the students' love for the Vietnamese language, culture, and people.
With the theme "Vietnam in My Heart," international students participating in the competition shared in Vietnamese their understanding of Vietnam's land, people, and culture; their profound memories of life, study, and living in Vietnam; and the solidarity and friendship between Vietnam and the students' home countries.
Launched in August,The 2023 Vietnamese Public Speaking Contest for International Students in VietnamThe event attracted many universities, colleges, and Vietnamese language training institutions with international students. Sixty-five training institutions from 29 provinces/cities nationwide registered to participate. This is one of the clearest proofs of the deep interest and love of international friends for Vietnam, its people, and its culture. In the preliminary round in the Northern region, 35 teams competed with meticulously prepared performances.
In the public speaking competition, each team selects 2-3 main speakers, with a maximum presentation time of 7 minutes per segment. Contestants present their speeches in Vietnamese on a self-chosen topic, and may use accompanying illustrations to enhance the appeal and persuasiveness of their presentation. The international students not only demonstrated fluent and articulate presentations, a deep understanding of the Vietnamese language and culture, but also presented impressive artistic performances.
Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc expressed his belief that each performance in today's competition was a unique creation, leaving a lasting impression not only on the international students but also on all the audience, those following the competition, and all Vietnamese people, allowing them to see Vietnam through multiple perspectives, fostering greater love and understanding of their own country.
Professor Hoang Anh Tuan, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, stated that VNU-USSH's hosting of the "Vietnamese Oratory Competition for International Students in 2023" will contribute to Vietnamese language training and spread Vietnamese culture to friends around the world.
According to Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc, the Vietnamese language and culture are increasingly asserting their position on the international stage; more and more foreigners are interested in learning and studying them. Vietnamese has also become one of the foreign languages ​​taught in many educational institutions in numerous countries and territories around the world.
Therefore, according to Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Phuc, teaching and learning Vietnamese is not only about language instruction and equipping students with tools to acquire knowledge, but also about promoting culture, spreading national identity, and enhancing intercultural communication skills for international students studying in Vietnam in particular, and foreigners and those who love the Vietnamese language and culture in general.
   

The competition left a strong impression on the audience. Representatives from the participating teams, consisting of international students from France, South Korea, and Japan currently studying at the University of Foreign Languages, Vietnam National University, expressed their positive impressions of living and studying at the University of Foreign Languages ​​in Vietnam. They were very surprised by their first days in Vietnam, noting how fast Vietnamese people ride motorbikes, enjoy iced tea and lemonade on the sidewalks, and especially appreciate the delicious food, beautiful scenery, and the harmonious and hospitable people. They were also particularly impressed by the dedicated support from their Vietnamese teachers and fellow students.
“I love Vietnam very much and want to convey that love to international students and foreigners in Vietnam!”; “Thank you, Vietnam, for giving me a vibrant youth”; “For us, Vietnam is our second home” - these are the feelings of international students from the competing teams as they shared their affection for the country and people of Vietnam.
The team from Friendship School 80 won first prize in Group A.
 
The team from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, won first prize in Group B.
At the end of the Northern regional preliminary round, the team from Friendship School 80 won first place in Group A, and the team from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi, won first place in Group B.
The four outstanding teams from the Northern regional preliminary round will continue to compete in the national final round, which will take place on December 1st in Ho Chi Minh City. These teams are: the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU Hanoi, Friendship School 80, Thai Nguyen University of Education, and Hanoi University.


Teaching and learning Vietnamese to generations of Vietnamese people abroad is a matter of great concern to the Party and the State, aiming to preserve, strengthen, and develop the Vietnamese language and national cultural identity; to awaken and promote the spirit of patriotism; and to contribute to promoting the Vietnamese language and culture abroad.
As the leading institution in Vietnam's education system, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has always been at the forefront of developing training programs and large-scale national projects. Among these, VNU has tasked the University of Social Sciences and Humanities with implementing a Vietnamese language training channel for Vietnamese people abroad.
With the mission of "teaching Vietnamese to international students, developing teaching methods, and training high-level interpreters" granted since 1968, the Department of Vietnamese Language at Hanoi University (now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) has over 60 years of tradition and 55 years of establishment, becoming one of the most prestigious institutions in Vietnam for teaching Vietnamese to foreigners.
