unnamed

Associate Professor Dr. Trinh Cam Lan: In the Bachelor's degree program in Linguistics, students will gain in-depth knowledge of linguistic theory: phonemes, grammatical structures, word formation, etc.
In addition, over the years, the Faculty of Linguistics has consistently reformed its curriculum, incorporating many applied and modern courses such as: Vietnamese linguistics and dictionary compilation, Vietnamese linguistics and teaching Vietnamese in schools, methods of teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language; Vietnamese linguistics and publishing; language of communication and social marketing, language of journalism; presentation skills, writing skills for print media, entrepreneurship, academic writing, creative thinking and idea design, etc.

To teach these modules, we utilize faculty members from within the department and also invite experts in the field to participate in teaching, providing hands-on guidance and helping students best access and practice these skills during class time.

Interviewer: Could you share more about the scope of application and specific development directions of the Linguistics major at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to meet the practical needs of society?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Cam Lan: The current scope of application of Linguistics and Vietnamese Linguistics is expanding into extremely new fields: such as Computational Linguistics, Therapeutic Linguistics, Psycholinguistics…
We have some good news to share with you: The Department of Linguistics is preparing to open two specializations: Therapeutic Linguistics and Computational Linguistics, meeting the urgent needs of society today. Computational Linguistics will strongly support the digital transformation in the field of linguistics and our language-related activities, assisting in the compilation of electronic dictionaries, teaching aids, and multimodal language teaching curricula (including text, images, static and dynamic images, etc.), and supporting the production of increasingly accurate and sophisticated machine translation software. Therapeutic Linguistics will help train technicians to rehabilitate language functions for children with language disabilities or developmental delays, and for adults who have unfortunately suffered injuries to the speech apparatus or the part of the brain that controls language communication, supporting them in recovering faster and proactively in this recovery process to help them quickly reintegrate into communication with the community.
It can be said that the Department of Linguistics is taking the right steps, and the faculty members are also striving their best for a Vietnamese linguistics discipline that is full of the spirit of contemporary life.

PV. We understand that Linguistics students receive significant support from the University and the Faculty. Could you please tell us about the support provided, specifically regarding internships and practical training throughout their studies?
Associate Professor Dr. Trinh Cam Lan: Each cohort of students has two internship periods, one in their third year and one in their fourth year (also known as the graduation internship), aimed at helping students apply the knowledge, skills, and methods they have learned to their professional work. Therefore, the Faculty directs students to intern at institutions that employ linguistics professionals, such as universities and high schools, research institutes, publishing houses, newspaper offices, radio and television stations... Another advantage is that the Faculty has a Center for Applied Linguistics and Vietnamese Linguistics Practice. In addition to teaching Vietnamese, organizing exams, and issuing certificates to foreign students, the Center also supports the Faculty's students in experiential activities such as research and teaching Vietnamese right at the center. Therefore, the Center becomes an effective internship facility for graduating students.
Regarding third-year internships, in recent years, the Faculty has supported students with opportunities to intern and experience a different culture and language. With a strong academic tradition and reputation, the Faculty of Linguistics has a network of partner universities in countries such as France, the USA, Australia, Japan, South Korea, China, and Thailand. These universities often send their students to study at the Faculty in Vietnam. In addition, the Faculty frequently sends students to internships in close partner countries (China, Thailand, South Korea) during their third year. During these internships, students receive full support from the partner universities regarding accommodation and transportation, and gain valuable experience in the language and culture of the host country, making it both cost-effective and beneficial.
