Establishing an Ethics Committee for Research at VNU-USSH: Consultation from experts at Indiana University.

Representatives from Indiana University highly appreciated the fact that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, is one of the pioneering universities in Vietnam in establishing an Ethics Committee for Research. This was the content discussed during the working session between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and Indiana University on June 7, 2023.
Attending the working session, on behalf of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi, were Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the university, leaders of the Cooperation and Development Department, the Scientific Research Management Department, the Training Department, the Communication and Information Technology Center of the Psychology Faculty, and the Sociology Faculty.
Representing Indiana University were Dr. John Baumann, Vice President for Research Compliance, Office of Research Compliance, Indiana University (USA), along with representatives from the PHER project.

The meeting was attended by representatives from Indiana University (USA) and representatives from the PHER project.
 
During the meeting, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities exchanged ideas and received advice from experts at Indiana University regarding the establishment of a Research Ethics Committee, a model that is still relatively new in Vietnam. Representatives from Indiana University highly appreciated the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi, as one of the pioneering universities in Vietnam to establish a Research Ethics Committee.
The Ethics Committee in Research is an organization whose function is to independently and accurately review the ethical aspects of research involving human subjects after the research topic has been approved by the relevant departments or funding agencies and before the research begins. Accordingly, the Ethics Committee in Research of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, has the authority to review the ethical aspects of research managed, led, or co-conducted by the University; and research conducted by organizations and individuals outside the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Vietnam upon request.
During the meeting, both sides also discussed the exchange of lecturers in PHER's training programs.
 

Previously, during a meeting at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi in March 2023, representatives from both institutions discussed opportunities for cooperation and collaboration between universities and businesses, such as career guidance, alumni associations; innovation and creativity; and business networking. Representatives from VNU-USSH and Indiana University also discussed and found common ground in developing a research support center model with the function of supporting the implementation of research projects, prestigious international publications, establishing a unit equivalent to an ethics committee, and providing training to enhance the capacity of researchers.
