The Department of Japanese Studies at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was established in 1993 (since 2019 it has become a major with its own admission code) and has so far had 25 courses with nearly 800 graduates.
The average entrance and exit scores of students majoring in Japanese Studies are often among the highest in the Faculty of Oriental Studies in particular and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in general. Most students find jobs within a year of graduation and have high incomes.Since its establishment, the Department of Japanese Studies, Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities has been the leading, pioneering and prestigious training unit in Vietnam in Japanese Studies. This is thanks to the orientation of training Japanese Studies in depth and with its own identity.
Right from the first day of establishment, the founders of the Department of Japanese Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi, soon realized the further need to train a high-quality human resource with a comprehensive and profound understanding of the country, language, culture and people of Japan. The human resource can meet the needs of government agencies that need a team of experts and consultants in relations with Japan; the needs of Japanese enterprises in Vietnam, Vietnamese enterprises and international organizations with relations with Japan need a team of staff capable of working long-term with Japanese people, fluent in the language, knowledgeable about Japanese culture, personality and lifestyle.
VNU-USSH lecturers and students of the Urasenke USSH Tea Ceremony Club organized an experience session at the Etokuan Tea House of the Hanoi Urasenke Tea Ceremony Club.
Students from Japan and VNU-USSH students interact and exchange academic knowledge in scientific seminars and experiential activities.
Associate Professor Dr. Phan Hai Linh shared: “Based on the close cooperative relationship with universities in Japan, Asia, Europe, America, etc., the Department of Japanese Studies is gradually expanding its cooperative relationship beyond the Asian region with the desire to build a Japanese Studies major in Vietnam of international standards.”
The context of increasingly deep cooperation between Vietnam and Japan requires an urgent need for a team of human resources with postgraduate qualifications, full specialized knowledge of Japan, the ability to think, synthesize and analyze, have professional and foreign language skills, and strategic forecasting to serve the management and policy making work for state agencies, research and teaching at universities, research institutes, and work at international organizations. Realizing that potential, in recent times, with the companionship and support of VNU, the University's Board of Directors, the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the team of lecturers of the Department of Japanese Studies have made outstanding, persistent, and responsible efforts to successfully build and defend the Master's and Doctoral training program in Japanese Studies.

And on the morning of March 15, 2023, the VNU-level Appraisal Council, chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Hai (Vice President of VNU), with prestigious and experienced experts such as Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc, Prof. Dr. Momoki Shiro, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tien Luc,... approved both the "Master of Japanese Studies" and "PhD in Japanese Studies" programs.
On June 21, 2023, VNU President Le Quan signed Decision No. 2178/QD-VNU on promulgating the master's degree training program in Japanese Studies (code: 8310613) and Decision No. 2176/QD-VNU promulgating the doctoral degree training program in Japanese Studies (code: 9310613) and assigned the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-USSH) to organize the training.
With the Master's and Doctoral training programs, students and researchers will learn and research in depth about Japan, from language, politics, economics, culture, literature, education, diplomacy, aesthetics, art, Japanese law..., as well as Japanese research methodology.
Lecturers in the Japanese Studies Department include 1 Professor, 3 Associate Professors, 4 PhDs with expertise in Japanese Studies, experience in conducting research programs with Japan, most of whom studied and researched at leading universities in Japan, with many high-quality scientific works related to Japan published domestically and internationally. In addition, there are also experts and researchers in Japanese Studies from prestigious universities in Vietnam, Japan and many other countries.
The Department of Japanese Studies has established academic exchange and cooperation relationships with leading universities in Japan: Tokyo University, Kyoto University, Osaka University, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Tokyo Gakugei University, Nara Women's University, Senshu University, Showa Women's University, etc. Through this, students, trainees and researchers will directly attend lectures on Japanese studies by Japanese and foreign professors; receive scholarships for study and scientific research, and opportunities for practical internships in Japan.
The President of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities received Ms. Bando Mariko, President of the Council of Showa Women's University (Japan) who visited and worked with the University.
Thus, up to now, the Department of Japanese Studies, Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities is the first and only unit in Vietnam to fully train 3 levels of Bachelor, Master and Doctorate in Japanese Studies.
