On December 15, 2021, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Vietnam jointly organized the research workshop "Vietnam Labor Research Network 2021 - Covid-19 and the outlook for labor relations in Vietnam".
The workshop is an opportunity for research groups, scientists from the Vietnam Labor Research Network, along with lecturers and practitioners to present the latest research results on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on labor relations in Vietnam.
The workshop focused on discussing the main issues: Impact of Covid-19 on labor and employment, labor in the informal/emerging economy, impact of labor law reform and impact of FTAs, globalization on labor relations. The workshop was attended by experts and researchers from the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, the Institute of Workers and Trade Unions, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, Hanoi Law University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, Hanoi National University, University of Labor and Social Affairs, Ton Duc Thang University, Nanhua University, Taiwan, Monash University, Institute of Social Life and the Center for Labor Relations Research. The reporters shared research results on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on female workers in the textile and garment industry, the issue of dialogue and collective bargaining in private and FDI enterprises, the issue of informalization of employment in Vietnam, theoretical and practical perspectives on precarious labor, legal adjustments for workers in the informal sector, workers' voice behavior and labor costs in the supply chain.
Experts from the Hai Phong Economic Zone Trade Union, the Center for Labor Relations Research, Oxford University, the Fair Wear Foundation Vietnam, the Department of Legislation, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, representatives of research institutes, agencies, departments, universities, and representatives of social organizations commented, shared ideas and made suggestions to complete the reports and make policy recommendations to improve the legal framework as well as the labor relations mechanism at enterprises.
The workshop provided a practical opportunity for research groups to discuss the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on labor relations in Vietnam and the broader context. It also raised the need for more in-depth, comprehensive research, as well as discussions between scholars and practitioners on this issue.
