Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor and People's Teacher Le Dinh Ky: Remembering a great teacher.

On the morning of April 4, 2023, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities solemnly organized the national scientific conference with the theme "One Hundredth Anniversary of the Birth of Professor and People's Teacher Le Dinh Ky" with profound gratitude.
Professor Lê Đình Kỵ (1923-2009) was a renowned and highly talented educator, one of the leading scientists in the field of literary theory, who worked at the Faculty of Literature - Hanoi University from 1956 to 1980. He was awarded the State Prize for Literature and Arts, the First Class Resistance Medal, the First Class Labor Medal, and the title of People's Teacher. Professor Kỵ authored hundreds of scientific articles and dozens of valuable scholarly monographs.
National Conference"One hundred years since the birth of Professor and People's Teacher Le Dinh Ky""The event, held on Professor Le Dinh Ky's birthday, is an opportunity to reflect on his contributions to the research and teaching of Literature, especially in the field of literary theory and criticism. From there, future generations of lecturers and students at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU Hanoi can continue his academic and teaching path, building upon the foundation of the academic and research achievements he so passionately established."
 
The seminar "One Centenary of the Birth of Professor Le Dinh Ky" was attended by many educators, scientists, the family of Professor Le Dinh Ky, and generations of lecturers and students.
Representing the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU Hanoi were Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Rector of the university; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Thanh Truong - Vice Rector, along with generations of faculty and students of the university.
The seminar was honored to welcome Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Ky - Chairman of the Central Council for Literary and Artistic Theory and Criticism; Dr. Bui The Duc - Vice Chairman of the Central Council for Literary and Artistic Theory and Criticism; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Khanh Thanh - Vice Chairman of the Central Council for Literary and Artistic Theory and Criticism; Mr. Nguyen Minh Nhut - Director of the Department of Culture and Arts, Central Propaganda Department; and Dr. Dinh Van Thuan - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Arts, Central Propaganda Department.
The workshop received the attention and participation of leading professors in literary theory, including Professor Ha Minh Duc and Professor Tran Dinh Su; Professor Dinh Xuan Dung; Associate Professor Nguyen Ngoc Thien; researcher Bui Viet Thang; researcher Lai Nguyen An; Associate Professor Nguyen Bich Thu… along with many educators and scientists from research and teaching institutions nationwide such as Hanoi University of Education, Hue University of Science, Can Tho University, Vietnam Literature and Arts Forum Magazine, the Institute of Literature - Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences and many other institutions.
Notably, the workshop was honored to welcome Ms. Ngo Kim Long, wife of Professor and People's Teacher Le Dinh Ky, along with her family.
Associate Professor Dr. Dao Thanh Truong - Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, shared the University's appreciation and respect for organizing the international conference commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor Le Dinh Ky.
 
Associate Professor Tran Khanh Thanh - Vice Chairman of the Central Council for Literary and Artistic Theory and Criticism, delivered the introductory report at the conference.
In his opening remarks at the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Dao Thanh Truong, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, emphasized: “The glorious scientific and educational tradition of Hanoi University, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, spanning nearly eighty years, has been built by many generations of exemplary, talented, and dedicated scientists and educators. One of the exemplary educators and talented scientists who has made significant contributions to this proud and beautiful tradition of the university is Professor Le Dinh Ky, a respected teacher of many generations of our teachers and students!”
Professor Ha Minh Duc, People's Teacher, shared memorable anecdotes about teacher Le Dinh Ky during the years of evacuation.
 
Professor Tran Dinh Su and his shared experiences with Professor Le Dinh Ky in their creative works of literary criticism and theory.
In a solemn and warm atmosphere of teacher-student and colleague camaraderie on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor Lê Đình Kỵ, many stories were shared by Professor Hà Minh Đức and Professor Trần Đình Sử, recounting profound memories from the years of war and hardship in the country. Professor Lê Đình Kỵ, a teacher and researcher, always maintained his intellect and pure heart, leaving behind invaluable works of literary criticism and theory.
In particular, Professor Lê Đình Kỵ always showed dedication and affection to generations of students; therefore, for Professor Đinh Xuân Dũng, Professor Lê Đình Kỵ is his "eternal teacher." Associate Professor Lý Hoài Thu also shared her feelings of gratitude and respect for Professor Lê Đình Kỵ. She still keeps his handwritten notes from decades ago as priceless mementos.
Unable to contain her emotions as she recalled many memories of Professor Le Dinh Ky and his years of tireless work, Mrs. Ngo Kim Long, the professor's wife, expressed her gratitude for the kindness and respect shown by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, by the scientists, teachers, and generations of students towards Professor Le Dinh Ky and his family.
 
Ms. Ngo Kim Long was deeply moved by the respect shown by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi, and the heartfelt appreciation of the scientists, generations of lecturers, and students of USSH towards Professor Le Dinh Ky.
 
For Professor Dr. Dinh Xuan Dung, Professor and People's Teacher Le Dinh Ky is his "eternal teacher".
 
Associate Professor Ly Hoai Thu still keeps the handwritten notes of Professor Le Dinh Ky from several decades ago as priceless mementos.

The achievements and exemplary moral character of Professor Le Dinh Ky, a true teacher and researcher, along with many generations of lecturers and scientists, have contributed to the proud history of the Faculty of Literature - Hanoi University, and now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Workshop to introduce the workA once-in-a-century opportunity - Professor, People's Teacher, Literary theorist and critic Le Dinh KySelected and introduced by researcher Tran Dinh Viet, published by Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House. The work consists of two parts. The first part is a collection of excerpts from Professor Le Dinh Ky's prominent works such as *Understanding Literature*, *The Tale of Kieu and Nguyen Du's Realism*, *Modern Poetry - The Ups and Downs*… The second part comprises 30 articles by scholars, relatives, and many generations of students about Professor Le Dinh Ky.

Professor, People's Teacher Le Dinh KyBorn on April 4, 1923, in Dien Hong commune, Dien Ban district, Quang Nam province.
After completing primary school at a small school in his hometown, Mr. Le Dinh Ky went to Hue to study at the private Viet Anh High School, where he passed the first part of the baccalaureate exam. He then transferred to the final year of high school at Petrus Truong Vinh Ky High School in Saigon. In 1944, after passing the second part of the baccalaureate exam, he returned to Quang Nam to teach and participate in the revolution. When the Japanese overthrew the French, he was active in the Phan Anh youth movement in Quang Nam. When the August Revolution broke out, he participated in the uprising in Hoi An, working in information and propaganda, and in popular education. In 1949, he was honored to be admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam. From 1949 to 1951, he served in the military as Deputy Battalion Commander of Military Intelligence, Military Region V. Due to health reasons, he was discharged and returned to teaching at Le Khiet High School, a renowned school in Military Region V, from 1952 to 1954. In early 1955, he relocated to North Vietnam and continued teaching at various high schools: Luong Ngoc Quyen High School in Thai Nguyen and Nguyen Trai High School in Hanoi.
From 1958, he was transferred to teach at the Faculty of Literature, Hanoi University, which had only been established for two years at the time. From then until 1980, for 23 years, he was a lecturer in the Department of Literary Theory, Faculty of Literature, Hanoi University. A few years after the reunification of the country, to strengthen the teaching staff of universities in the South, he transferred to the Faculty of Literature in Ho Chi Minh City, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, where he worked until his retirement.
For over half a century dedicated to education, Professor Le Dinh Ky has contributed to the training of thousands of students; successfully supervised 10 doctoral dissertations and numerous master's theses. During 40 years of diligent research, the professor published 19 volumes of textbooks, essays, and scholarly works on literature, all of high value. For his immense contributions to education and scientific research, he was awarded the title of Professor in 1984; in 1988, he was awarded the title of People's Teacher by the State; and received numerous prestigious awards and medals: the Third-Class Victory Medal, the First-Class Resistance Medal, the First-Class Labor Medal, and the State Prize for Literature and Arts in 2001.
