Overview of the Workshop
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the behavior of students and parents. The trend of using technology, specifically online platforms, in the educational environment has increased significantly. The education technology (edtech) industry has experienced explosive growth and the demand for online learning solutions has also skyrocketed. According to a survey by Comscore, from January to February 2020, monthly page views of educational websites more than doubled (103%), and nearly tripled (292%) for educational websites for children and parents.

Along with changes in teaching and learning habits, parents and students’ expectations for modernization and technology in the education sector are also increasing. The HolonIQ 2020 survey conducted in March 2020 showed that the use of new technologies is one of the most popular growth strategies for education businesses after COVID (except for the kindergarten model). This is considered more important than some previous core factors, such as investing in new products, markets, or operating methods.
Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy - Acting Director of the Department of Education and Training, Ministry of Education and Training spoke at the Workshop.
In Vietnam, the trend of applying IT or digitalization in education is developing strongly. Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy (Acting Director of the Department of Education and Training, Ministry of Education and Training) commented: "It is undeniable that the education and training sector has been and is being greatly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the impacts of the pandemic are also the driving force to promote the digital transformation process of the entire sector". She also cited: in a very short time, we have witnessed educational institutions at all levels from university to primary school have been proactive and flexibly applying digital technology. It could be replacing traditional classrooms with livestream tools; it could be assigning homework on online education platforms. Most schools maintain fully or partially online teaching and learning during the period of social distancing. Therefore, it can be affirmed that: “The initial application of technology has had positive results, helping education officials to exchange, work and cooperate smoothly, while students' learning is less interrupted. In my opinion, these are positive steps that we need to promote further in the coming time”.
Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh - Rector of University of Social Sciences and Humanities speaking at the Workshop
Affirming the important role of IT in education, Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities) shared: "In the context of the ongoing pandemic, technology is the key to helping educational institutions overcome difficulties and develop sustainably". The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is a unit that has recognized the importance of technology early and has implemented a series of research and consulting activities: building the Internet and Society Research Program; organizing many seminars on hot issues such as Hate speech; advising the Ministry of Information and Communications to build a Code of Conduct on social networks... The school has also proactively changed the form of teaching and learning, combining Online and Blended learning. In particular, with the support of Facebook, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has included the subject "Digital Literacy" into the undergraduate training program in Information Management. Last December, a delegation of the school’s staff was invited to Facebook’s headquarters in Singapore to attend a training course on social media skills. This was the first activity for a deep cooperation project between the two sides to disseminate knowledge about “digital capacity” in universities in Vietnam in 2020.
Ms. Nguyen Phuong Chi - Manager of Public Policy for Vietnam Market, Facebook
Digitalizing education from a communication perspective, MSc. Khoa Anh Viet (Director of the Center for Information Technology - Communication and Learning Materials, University of Foreign Languages, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) shared the experience of the University of Foreign Languages in implementing communication work in the direction of adapting to the digitalization trend. Accordingly, in terms of content, the University focuses on producing many products with content and topics that attract young people, who are the fastest to access the digitalization trend. In terms of form, the products are made in an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand, easy-to-access, fun or "trendy" format to attract viewers such as videos with many images, sounds or infographics... Currently, the University of Foreign Languages has many online communication channels such as: website, fanpage, youtube, staff facebook group, email, staff zalo/viber channel, ...
MSc. Khoa Anh Viet (middle) and Mr. Pham Giang Linh (right) are two guests of the Workshop sharing experiences in adapting to digital trends in education from the perspective of universities and educational enterprises.
In recent years, especially this year with the emergence of the Covid-19 epidemic, the University of Foreign Languages has organized many online admissions consulting activities from secondary to university levels by livestreaming at the studio or via Zoom. “Although there is still a need for further improvement, the events have received very good interactions, so I think this form also helps a lot in admissions communication work. In general, I have to affirm that if there were only traditional direct communication, the brand image of ULIS would not be as it is today. Therefore, in the current digitalization trend, universities should focus on online communication.”
Ms. Nguyen Phuong Chi presented flowers to Principal Professor Pham Quang Minh and Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy.
Mr. Pham Giang Linh - General Director of HOCMAI Education System, an enterprise providing online education services for high school students with nearly 4 million members - shared his experience in taking advantage of online platforms in introducing educational products: Currently, HOCMAI has a Fanpage system for students and parents, with 1 to 1.2 million followers and many other Fanpages for other purposes. HOCMAI has taken advantage of these channels to introduce free courses to students during the time they are not in school, and at the same time connected with universities to support introducing information about the schools to students.

Mr. Nguyen Nhat Minh - Business Strategy Manager of Facebook Group advised educational institutions in Vietnam to view the digital transformation trend as a long-term strategy instead of a short-term one. Mr. Minh believes that it is necessary to invest in building quality, systematic online course content that brings core values to learners. That is to build a foundation from the content, while images, sounds, and effects are just ways to convey and how to prove the value of the course to help customers gain more knowledge and become what kind of person.
The technical team worked at the Workshop to serve more than 800 individuals who are officials working at universities and educational institutions nationwide to attend the workshop via Zoom meetings software.
Sharing about Facebook's activities to support the development of digital education in Vietnam, Mr. Nguyen Tuong Huy, Director of Small and Medium Enterprises Management, Vietnam Market at Facebook committed: "With a diverse ecosystem of applications, Facebook is honored to contribute to supporting education and have the opportunity to bring technology solutions to help schools adapt to changes in the education sector during and after COVID. We will continue to work closely with schools to build long-term multi-channel strategies for the future of the education sector in Vietnam."
