Archival resources on Vietnam - prospects for cooperation and sharing between Vietnam and France and other Francophone countries.

This information was shared at an international scientific seminar organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) on December 15, 2023.
The panel discussion was organized byDepartment of Archival Studies and Office ManagementIn collaboration with the Institute of Asian Studies at Aix-Marseille University, the event was co-organized with the participation of scientists, lecturers, and students from both domestic and international institutions, including: the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Central Party Office Archives, the National Archives Centers I, II, and III, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Archives, Osaka University, the Institute of Han Nom Studies, Aix-Marseille University, Lumière Lyon 2 University, the French National Overseas Archives, etc.

In his opening remarks at the seminar, Associate Professor Dr. Dao Thanh Truong, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, emphasized that 2023 marks an important milestone commemorating the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and France (1973-2023), and the 10th anniversary of the two countries upgrading their relationship to a Strategic Partnership. Over the past 50 years, overcoming all historical changes, the friendly and cooperative relationship between Vietnam and France has become increasingly strong, deepened, and comprehensively and effectively integrated across all fields, including cooperation in archival activities.
“The exchange of archival document catalogs currently preserved in the national archives of the two countries, the organization of archival exhibitions related to Vietnamese-French history, and the creation of a joint website to showcase archival materials… are vivid manifestations of the meaningful cooperative relationship between Vietnam and France in sharing the memories of time and history,” shared Associate Professor Dr. Dao Thanh Truong.

According to Ms. Nguyen Phuong Ngoc, Director of the Institute of Asian Studies at Aix-Marseille University, Aix-Marseille University and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, have had many effective and sustained collaborative activities in research and training in the field of archiving and office management, including faculty and student exchanges, support for international publication of research results, and the formation of numerous collaborative training programs and scientific seminars over the years.
According to Ms. Phuong Ngoc, the seminar held at VNU-USSH is an annual scientific exchange activity between Aix-Marseille University and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. It is an opportunity for scholars to share solutions to improve the efficiency of exploiting and using archival resources, and to assess the potential for archival cooperation among countries in sharing research information on Vietnam.

The seminar program was divided into two sessions, in which speakers focused on introducing, analyzing, and evaluating the value, accessibility, and utilization of archival resources on:
- History of Vietnam-France cooperation;
- Economic cooperation between Vietnam and France;
- Cultural cooperation between Vietnam and France.
At the seminar, speakers also presented assessments of the effectiveness of utilizing archival resources and the potential for cooperation among archival institutions in sharing research information on Vietnam-France relations.
The seminar served as a forum to promote the achievements of archival research in Vietnam to international friends. The Department of Archival Studies and Office Management, as a leading research and training center in archival studies in Vietnam, will connect experts and scientists to further develop research directions on archival resources concerning the relationship between Vietnam and France, and French-speaking countries in particular, as well as interdisciplinary research directions that harmoniously combine theoretical and practical elements. This activity contributes to strengthening and further developing scientific cooperation with leading universities and research institutes from the Republic of France.
Within the framework of the seminar, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities organized an exhibition of archival documents with the theme "Ho Guom Lake: East-West Crossroads".
