On September 2, 1945, at Ba Dinh Square, President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence, which he had drafted, solemnly proclaiming to the whole world the birth of a new state: the Democratic Republic of Vietnam - now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Seventy-eight years have passed, yet President Ho Chi Minh's Declaration of Independence remains an immortal epic, living on in the hearts of the Vietnamese people.
The ideas and viewpoints of President Ho Chi Minh in the Declaration of Independence regarding national and human rights, and the aspiration and resolute fighting spirit to maintain independence and freedom, always hold profound significance in the current process of building and defending the Fatherland.
The rebirth of a nation, a people.According to Professor Vu Minh Giang, Vice President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association and Chairman of the Science and Training Council (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), the greatest significance of the Declaration is its declaration to the world about the rebirth of a nation and a people.
President Ho Chi Minh emphatically affirmed at Ba Dinh Square: "The Vietnamese nation has the right to enjoy freedom and independence. And in fact, it has become a free and independent nation. The entire Vietnamese people are determined to dedicate all their spirit, strength, lives, and property to uphold that right to freedom and independence."
For nearly 80 years, faithful to their oath of independence, the entire Vietnamese nation has gone through the resistance war against French colonialism, from the 60 days of selfless sacrifice for the Fatherland to the decisive 56-day and night battle at Dien Bien Phu, making immense sacrifices, but ultimately we overcame all difficulties to achieve a great victory.
The entire nation united, upholding the oath proclaimed in Ba Dinh Square on September 2nd of that year, dedicating all their spirit and strength, lives and property, to safeguarding the independence and freedom of the Fatherland.
Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang - Vice President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association, Chairman of the Science and Training Council of Hanoi National University.
Further analyzing the historical value of the Declaration of Independence, Mr. Vu Minh Giang stated that the motto of the country's name includes the phrase "Independence - Freedom - Happiness," which represents the goals of the revolution and the aspirations of every citizen. Freedom and happiness are the goals set for the revolution and also the aspirations of the people.
It can be said that throughout the journey from 1975 to the present, we have taken an unprecedented step forward in history. That is, the lives of the people are guaranteed freedom and happiness.
With its concise, forceful language and rigorous, resonant arguments, the Declaration of Independence is a solid legal foundation, not only possessing historical value in strongly affirming the national sovereignty of the Vietnamese people before the whole world, but also having profound contemporary significance, ushering in a new era for our nation on its path of development today.
Today, Hanoi, the capital city, is resplendent with colorful flags, banners, and slogans celebrating the 78th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd.
Vietnam has gradually overcome difficulties.According to Professor Vu Minh Giang, from the first day of independence on September 2, 1945, to the present day, each period has left its mark on the development of the nation, from the period of seizing power, the period of resistance and national reunification, to the period of reform, and especially in recent years when the whole world has faced the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, which we have successfully controlled.
The 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam took place during a time when the pandemic was still raging, but we still organized it very successfully!
It can be said that, after a period of great difficulty, complexity, and many international events, Vietnam has gradually overcome challenges and the pandemic. To date, we have maintained social stability and sustained economic growth.
And the image of Hanoi these days, resplendent with flags, banners, and slogans celebrating the 78th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd, is the clearest evidence that the spirit of the Declaration of Independence lives on in the hearts of generations of Vietnamese people, not only because of its historical and legal value but also because of its lofty humanistic value regarding human rights and the right of the nation to live in independence and freedom, as President Ho Chi Minh cherished and dedicated his entire life to realizing.
