Attending the meeting were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Thanh Truong – Vice Rector of the university, representatives from the Departments of Cooperation and Development, Training, Scientific Research Management, Politics and Student Affairs, and the Head of the Korean Studies Department.
Among the guests were Mr. Joonmo Kang, Vice President of Hoseo University, along with representatives from various faculties and the university's external affairs department.
During the meeting, Associate Professor Dr. Dao Thanh Truong shared: The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is a key member of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and a leading training institution nationwide in social sciences and humanities. The university is proud of its long history and tradition, having been established by President Ho Chi Minh. Following its orientation as a research university, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi aims to be among the top 150 universities in Asia by 2025, among the top 100 universities in the continent by 2035, and on par with advanced universities (among the top 500) in the world.
To date, the university has 17 training units and numerous research units ranked among the top 500 in the QS Asia rankings. The university offers a diverse range of training programs from undergraduate to doctoral levels, encompassing basic sciences such as Literature, Linguistics, History, and Philosophy, as well as applied sciences such as Journalism, International Studies, Psychology, and Public Relations. Among these, the Department of Korean Studies, part of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, is one of the first units in the country to offer training and research in Korean Studies. Throughout its nearly 30 years of operation and development, the Department of Korean Studies has received significant attention and support from government agencies, international organizations, schools, and businesses in Korea.
With a mission to be at the forefront of training high-quality, highly skilled human resources; researching, innovating, and disseminating knowledge in the field of social sciences and humanities, the University always values its strategic cooperation with South Korea. This has been demonstrated through its history of cooperation with foundations and universities such as Seoul National University, the Korea Foundation, and the KAS Foundation… In addition, USSH-VNU is also a destination for many political figures from South Korea. Notably, the University has had the opportunity to welcome and work with the President and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of South Korea to Vietnam.
Mr. Joonmo Nam, Vice President of Hoseo University, expressed his willingness to continue signing the cooperation agreement between the two universities. Mr. Joonmo Nam shared: Hoseo University is a private university established in 1979, with over 14,000 students and more than 500 faculty members. Hoseo University is also a comprehensive university with 8 constituent units and a total of 60 departments offering training in various fields. Notably, Hoseo University is proud to be the first university in Korea to incorporate entrepreneurship and venture capital education into its curriculum, and the university has a particular strength in science and engineering.
Mr. Joonmo Nam, Vice President of Hoseo University, hopes that the two sides can soon renew the cooperation agreement in the future.
In response to Mr. Joonmo Nam's goodwill, Associate Professor Dr. Dao Thanh Truong affirmed the potential for successful cooperation between the two universities in the future. Combining the strengths of both universities—social sciences and science and technology—will undoubtedly bring about new breakthroughs in the training and scientific research activities of both institutions. In particular, USSH-VNU is also the first university in Vietnam to incorporate entrepreneurship into its curriculum, promising strong links and opportunities for academic exchange between the two sides based on existing similarities.
Dr. Luu Tuan Anh – Head of the Korean Studies Department – discussed the connection between the faculty and the department, creating job opportunities for newly graduated students at Korean companies in Vietnam.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views and reached consensus on many aspects of activities, such as cooperation in developing curricula, not only in Korean Studies, but also in Chinese and Japanese Studies, Public Administration, etc. Furthermore, as an academic institution with extensive experience in student and faculty exchange, USSH – VNU is also ready to welcome Korean students to study and conduct research in Vietnam, participate in short-term courses, and create opportunities for cultural exchange and interaction between students of the two universities in particular and Vietnam and Korea in general. In the near future, both sides will review the previous cooperation draft and improve and update it to continue signing a new cooperation agreement, aiming towards a mutually beneficial model.
