Major in Vietnamese Cultural History: The Beginnings of a New Major

Along with the process of national renewal, in response to the practical requirements of society in the process of cultural contact and exchange, international integration, in 2004, the Department of Vietnamese Cultural History was changed to the Department of Cultural Studies. In 2009, the Department changed its name to Cultural Studies and Vietnamese Cultural History.develop in the direction of promoting research on Cultural Studies as well as research on Vietnamese culture on the basis of promoting the fundamental strengths of historical research.

Since its inception, the Department of Cultural Studies and History of Vietnamese Culture hasundertakes teaching the general subject of Vietnamese Cultural Foundations for most students of Hanoi National University and training courses of students majoring in Cultural History.Vietnam belongs to the Faculty of History, University of Social Sciences and Humanities. With 18 major courses (about more than 400 graduates), the Department of Cultural Studies and Vietnamese Cultural History has further demonstrated its advantages in training and scientific research activities. The Department has ensured good progress and quality of teaching the major's topics, from issues ofTheory, Research Methods of Cultural Studiesto specific issues such asVillage culture, Urban and Urban culture in Vietnam; Cultural contact and exchange; Religion, beliefs, festivals in Vietnam; Music, Fine arts, Traditional Vietnamese cuisine...The knowledge imparted by teachers is not only a good foundation for students to complete their studies but also a valuable asset for generations of students when they graduate.

Based on the teaching and scientific research achievements of the Department, also aiming tomeet the needs of training high-quality human resources for society to serve research, practice, management, preservation... of cultural values, since 2013, the National University has approved the Project to open a Master's training code for Vietnamese Cultural History by the Department of Cultural Studies and Vietnamese Cultural History. Up to now, the Department has trained 3 Postgraduate courses (2014, 2015, 2016). Based on the knowledge acquired from the Bachelor's program, Master's students are exposed to more in-depth issues, raising them to a higher and more updated vision, such as:Culture and sustainable development,Economic-cultural-social relations between rural and urban areas in the history of Vietnamese culture, The integration and modernization process of Vietnamese culture...Students can also choose subjects depending on the field and direction of research such as:Culture of Central and Southern Vietnam, Traditional festivals in modern Vietnamese society, Architecture and decoration of traditional Vietnamese architecture, Cham culture in the historical process of Vietnamese culture, Unity and diversity in Vietnamese culture, Some modern cultural issues...These topics will equip students with in-depth knowledge of specific fields and aspects of culture, from which students can proactively grasp, perceive, analyze, evaluate and solve cultural problems in real life as well as work.

One of the strengths in the training activities of the major of Vietnamese Cultural History is practical internship.. Right from the Bachelor's program, the Department has always focused on practical internship programs for students. These could be survey trips, visiting the system of temples, pagodas, shrines in an area within the framework of a topic on religion, beliefs... These could be trips wandering through markets, wharves, streets/villages in a topic on urban/or village. These could be field trips, "three together" with people from all over the country, from the Northwest mountains, through villages in the Red River Delta to the Central region in a long-term practical internship program. On each trip, students get to live, experience, and learn about the material and spiritual life, customs, traditions, festivals, religions, beliefs, etc., not only of the Vietnamese people but also of other ethnic groups, not only in the present but also in the past and towards the future. Therefore, it is not by chance that many generations of students and postgraduates, when remembering their days studying Vietnamese Cultural History, remember their internship days, their field trips from the countryside to the city, from the highlands to the lowlands, to exclaim that "if I could choose again, I would still choose to study Cultural History"...

Due to the attraction of the training major as well as the needs of society, many students from other schools and majors have become graduate students of Vietnamese Cultural History. Among the 16 graduate students of Vietnamese Cultural History, 9 are undergraduate students of the major, and 7 are from other majors of the Faculty of History or from other schools. A good sign is that the first graduate student after completing the program has been recruited into a prestigious cultural training and research unit in Hanoi. That is a source of encouragement and motivation for teachers in general and the Department of Cultural Studies and Vietnamese Cultural History in particular, and at the same time, it is also a responsibility and challenge in training activities, in order to improve quality and attract students to the major more widely. In the coming time, the Department of Cultural Studies and Vietnamese Cultural History will continue to build a team of staff, ensure good training activities for Bachelor and Master degrees, and move towards opening a training code for Vietnamese Cultural History at the doctoral level, ensuring the requirements for continuous training activities, meeting the needs of high-quality human resources to serve society.

Besides,In 2017, the Faculty of History continued to develop a project to open a Master's degree in Cultural Management, meeting the needs of staff working in management as well as cultural agencies from local to central levels.can enroll the first course from 2018. Also following that development direction,The Faculty of History strives to build the Cultural Studies major as an independent major, providing continuous training from Bachelor to Doctorate level, meeting well and promptly the social needs for a high-quality workforce working in the cultural field of the country in the new era.
