Nearly 17,000 candidates officially began the second round of the 2015 aptitude test.
Following the success of the first phase, based on the number of registered candidates and actual conditions, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) will continue to organize the second phase of the aptitude test for regular university admissions in August 2015. With 16,849 registered candidates, VNU will organize the test in 7 provinces/cities including Hanoi, Da Nang, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Nam Dinh, Hai Phong and Thai Nguyen. There will be a total of 11 testing locations, including 5 in Hanoi.
Notably, in the second phase, Vietnam National University, Hanoi did not organize a foreign language exam.
Speaking at a press briefing on the morning of August 1st, Nguyen Kim Son, Vice Director and Head of the Admissions Steering Committee of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) in 2015, stated that on the first day of the second exam session (August 1st), VNU organized exams in three clusters: Da Nang, Hai Phong, and Nghe An. According to preliminary statistics after the first exam session, the average attendance rate across the three clusters reached 61.98%. By the second exam session – the afternoon of August 1st – the attendance rate was approximately 63%.
Deputy Director Nguyen Kim Son commented: "Compared to the first phase, this rate is about 34% lower. However, this is not unexpected by VNU and it is completely normal."
To ensure fairness and stability in terms of philosophy, regulations, procedures, techniques, exam questions, assessment methods, scoring, and many other factors, the second exam remains unchanged from the first. However, in the second phase, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has adjusted some technical issues to be more reasonable, simpler, and more convenient for candidates as well as for management and administration, such as: Organizing exam registration for candidates through two methods: online or direct registration at the VNU Examination Center; Only posting information from the exam notification slip on the VNU Examination Center website at [website address].http://cet.vnu.edu.vnCandidates must print or copy the exam room information, exam time, exam location, etc. themselves, and pay the fee through branches of the Vietnam Investment and Development Bank (BIDV) or candidates can pay directly at the Examination Center of VNU Hanoi.
Furthermore, the schedule for the second exam session has been adjusted compared to the initial plan in early 2015. Instead of holding the exam over two days, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) will hold it over a longer period, from August 1st to August 6th, with contingency days of August 7th and 8th, 2015. The time interval between the morning and afternoon exam sessions has also been increased by 15 minutes to facilitate exam organization.
After listing and analyzing some common mistakes made by candidates in the first phase, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) adjusted the software, increasing warnings to candidates from the beginning of the exam to avoid negative consequences from incorrect operations and minimize the number of candidates who have to change exam sessions.
In particular, the exam questions have been reviewed, refined, and supplemented with some new questions in accordance with the established principles. Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) continues to apply modern test theory in the question matching process to ensure a balanced difficulty level across the exam papers. After the first phase, VNU also conducted checks on candidates' records and answer sheets; and reviewed the combined software multiple times using various methods. The results showed that the software functioned well, accurately selecting questions and ensuring a balanced ratio of easy and difficult questions in each exam paper.
The results from a survey of the 41 highest-scoring candidates in the first aptitude test proved this. The average score difference between the mock test and the official test was only 1-2 points. Therefore, it can be affirmed that the VNU's ability to balance the difficulty level of the exam is well-maintained.
According to Deputy Director Nguyen Kim Son, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) does not allocate specific quotas for each exam session, but instead adheres to the view that exams and admissions are two separate processes. The basis for admission is the quality threshold of the candidates, and this will vary between different training programs and at different times.
“During the first round of admissions, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) calculated a certain percentage of candidates, but did not recruit the full number. Because the exact enrollment rate from the first round was unknown, VNU only announced the precise number of candidates for each major in the second round of admissions after August 20, 2015,” Deputy Director Nguyen Kim Son added.
Confirming that the number of candidates who have to switch to a different exam session in the second phase will be significantly lower than in the first phase, Deputy Director Nguyen Kim Son said that in the second phase, Vietnam National University, Hanoi has made very thorough preparations regarding equipment for the exam and has also strengthened warnings and reminders to candidates from the beginning of the exam to avoid common mistakes like those in the first phase.
Deputy Director Nguyen Kim Son emphasized: “The current student-to-faculty ratio at Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) is 15 – nearly meeting international standards. Therefore, the training quota is not a concern for VNU. Even if the enrollment rate in the first round is high, VNU will still ensure the rights of candidates who have received admission notices while also creating opportunities for high-scoring candidates in the second round.”
Tomorrow (August 2nd), candidates will continue to take the aptitude test at two testing centers: Hai Phong and Nghe An.

In the first phase (held from May 30th, 31st to June 1st, 2nd, 2015 at 9 examination clusters with 21 examination locations in 7 provinces and cities nationwide), 43,369 out of 45,350 registered candidates were present to take the exam (95.63%), including 13,253 out of 14,598 candidates who took the foreign language exam (90.79%). The candidates took the exam seriously and strictly followed the examination regulations.

The results of the first aptitude test represent an initial success for Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) in its efforts to reform examinations towards greater objectivity, accuracy, fairness, transparency, convenience, cost-effectiveness, and reduced pressure on candidates, their families, and society as a whole. After the test, the majority of candidates agreed that the new examination format was convenient, fair, and provided a comprehensive and accurate assessment of their abilities.
