{Celebrating 75 years of tradition, 25 years of establishment} Scientific works winning State awards

When mentioning Hanoi National University, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU, we must mention generations of talented scientists who laid the foundation for the social sciences and humanities in Vietnam after the revolution. 11 Ho Chi Minh Prizes, 12 State Prizes in Science and Technology are proud and rare achievements for a university in the country. With respect and pride, the USSH website would like to introduce the typical scientific works that won the Ho Chi Minh Prize of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

1. Vietnamese-English Dictionary) - Associate Professor Bui Phung, State Prize for Science and Technology in 2000

The “Vietnamese-English Dictionary” by Associate Professor Bui Phung has been reprinted many times since 1978, and by the 30th reprint, the number of words has increased from 15,000 to 350,000 words. It is considered by domestic and foreign scholars to be the largest and most complete Vietnamese-English dictionary ever. The author has painstakingly researched the Vietnamese language in terms of vocabulary as well as grammar and semantics, pointing out the function of words in different contexts, helping to translate Vietnamese into English smoothly and accurately. The dictionary also contributes to finding similarities and differences between Vietnamese and English, as well as unique features in Vietnamese.

2. Modern Vietnamese literature and literary theory(on modern literature) - Professor, People's Teacher Ha Minh Duc, State Prize for Science and Technology in 2000

This group of works on Modern Vietnamese Literature and Literary Theory by Professor Ha Minh Duc includes 4 works:

- “Nam Cao, his literary life and works” (192 pages), research on the life and literary activities of Nam Cao, Nam Cao's works and the path to realism (Part I); Nam Cao's works before and after the August Revolution (Part II and III); the countryside in Nam Cao's works (Part IV).

- “Literary essay" published in 1998, is a general treatise on the new poetry movement, romantic culture (1930 - 1945), on drama in its early formation and development, on President Ho Chi Minh's poetic and literary views, on the literary careers of the authors: To Huu, Xuan Dieu, Huy Can, Che Lan Vien, Nam Cao, Nguyen Huy Tuong, Te Hanh, To Hoai.

- “Poetry and some issues of modern Vietnamese poetry" (402 pages) is a work completed by Professor Ha Minh Duc for publication in 1974, consisting of 7 chapters, with the content of determining a correct viewpoint on poetry; the poet - the ego and the lyrical character in poetry; the tendency of poetry; emotions and thoughts in poetry; tradition and creativity in poetry; form of poetry.

- “C.Marx, F.Engels, V.Lenin and some issues of literary theory" published by Truth Publishing House in 1982, dealing with the following contents: Marx, Engels and some issues of literary theory; the relationship between literature and social life; class character, Party character, national character and artistic creativity; worldview - reality and life - the process of literary development; new historical conditions and Lenin's contributions to literary theory; Marxist perception and specific issues of literature and art; the principle of Party character in literature; the task of building a new culture and the issue of inheriting old cultural heritage.

3. The cluster of works on Vietnamese culture includes:Vietnamese culture, new approach;Try to understand Nguyen Du's personality in Tale of Kieu - Prof. Phan Ngoc, State Prize for Science and Technology in 2000

The cluster of works on Vietnamese culture includes two works:

- “Vietnamese culture, a new approach”Published in 1998. The work introduces an understanding of Vietnamese culture, analyzes cultural issues in terms of relationships, and explains why there are different solutions in different cultures to issues of global significance. The work has both historical and cultural value, helping readers have a comprehensive view and understand the Party's guidelines and Uncle Ho's thoughts in history and the present, thereby innovating and improving the culture of each individual in accordance with the current international integration situation. The work consists of 6 chapters: Chapter 1: Cultural issues and new approaches; Chapter 2: Towards a new awareness of Vietnamese culture; Chapter 3: Talking with Hue culture; Chapter 4: Nguyen Trai; Chapter 5: Nguyen Dinh Chieu; Chapter 6: Nguyen Ai Quoc.

- “"Learning Nguyen Du's style in The Tale of Kieu", 328 pages, is the author's research on a specific work, with an approach from a cultural perspective. In this work, he made new, convincing discoveries about the value of Truyen Kieu and affirmed Nguyen Du's talent. For example, he found the differences between Truyen Kieu and Kim Van Kieu and found that this difference was due to cultural tradition; Luc Bat poetry is a unique poetic form in Vietnam, not found in China; the way of analyzing the inner thoughts of the character Kieu is the type that contemporary Nom poets often do.

4. Return to the origin(2 volumes) - Professor, People's Teacher Phan Huy Le, State Prize for Science and Technology in 2000

“Finding the Roots” (2 volumes) is a group of research works on medieval Vietnamese history, mainly from the 15th to the 19th century by Professor Phan Huy Le, published from 1959 to 1966. This group of works has contents according to the following topics: Historical sources and methods, results of approaches; Some major issues of Vietnamese history such as the process of nation formation; the development of socio-economic forms; Socio-economic issues of political design; Great victories in the history of fighting against foreign invaders; Some typical historical figures; National traditions. This cluster of works contributes to improving scientific understanding of national history, has been used in compiling textbooks, university and postgraduate teaching topics, and in compiling general education textbooks, as well as books to popularize historical knowledge for the people, actively contributing to national traditional textbooks, raising awareness of the characteristics and laws of movement of Vietnamese society and people.

5. Research and discuss some genres of Vietnamese medieval literature -Associate Professor, Meritorious Student Bui Duy Tan, State Prize for Science and Technology in 2005

The research and discussion of some genres and works of Vietnamese medieval literature authors (research and discussion) has researched many issues: exploring the source of historical poetry, a type of poetry that the kings praised the country's famous people in ancient times; returning the true name of the author of the poem "Nam quoc son ha", calling it the poem "Than vo - danh thi"... The work also discussed with many new interpretations in the field of ancient literature research: such as the first survey of most of the historical poetry texts and correctly assessed that the poetic genre left many worthy songs of patriotism and national pride, when writing about historical celebrities who were later honored as national heroes. and added to the research history of great authors: Nguyen Trai - Nguyen Binh Khiem - Le Thanh Tong... articles with new thoughts and explorations. The research and discussion work has recorded the spirit of respecting teachers, understanding reason, reaching out to emotions, and scientific objectivity when writing about: Dang Thai Mai, Cao Xuan Huy...

6.Vietnamese Dialects -Professor, People's Teacher Hoang Thi Chau, State Prize for Science and Technology in 2005

The work relies on the methods of linguistics and methodology to describe, analyze, and introduce local variations of Vietnamese, explaining the social causes and the rules of phonetic change that have created that diversity. The author has applied the available documents on the history of language to determine the dates of the changes. This is the result of the author's collection and research over many years of teaching. The work has divided Vietnamese dialects and clearly pointed out and explained the characteristics of each region's language. At the same time, it has found the rules of change and development of the language to move towards standardizing the national language.

7.Vietnamese Villages - An Economic - Cultural - Social Issue -Professor, People's Teacher Phan Dai Doan, State Prize for Science and Technology in 2005

The bookVietnamese Villages - An Economic - Cultural - Social Issue, including main contents: economic structure; social structure; cultural structure and summary. The book emphasizes the fundamental problem in the production of farmers in our country from the past to the present is the reproduction of small farmers "human resources". Therefore, migration and land reclamation were urgent tasks for our farmers in the past. The book is of great significance for the study of the socio-economic characteristics of traditional and modern Vietnamese villages. The content of the book is necessary to promote the good traditions of Vietnamese villages, while overcoming its limitations in the process of national renewal. This is a useful document for scientists, managers, and policy makers on agriculture - farmers - rural areas.

8.Some issues on Vietnamese ethnology -Prof. Dr. People's Teacher Phan Huu Dat, State Prize for Science and Technology in 2005

The work includes 59 scientific research articles, covering many areas of Vietnamese ethnology such as Marxism-Leninism, Ho Chi Minh's thought, guidelines, policies, basic principles of the ethnic policy of our Party and State, the ethnic process and ethnic relations in our country, the culture of our ethnic groups, some issues on marriage, family and primitive society in our country... The development process of our ethnic groups from 1945 to present and the contributions of the ethnic groups to the cause of building and defending the Fatherland.

The work of Professor Pham Huu Dat has contributed to building the theoretical foundation for the subject of ethnology in our country, enriching social awareness of ethnic issues and clarifying our State's viewpoint on ethnic policies. Delving into some specific aspects such as: primitive society, marriage and family, ethnic system, ethnic culture, the author has made new contributions to the awareness of issues related to the subject and task of ethnology, and the issues of marriage and family of ethnic minorities.

The cluster of works by Professor Phan Cu De that received the State Prize includes:Vietnamese writer(literary studies),Modern Vietnamese Novels(critical theory),Ngo Tat To(literary studies),Han Mac Tu(literary research). These works partly reflect the systematic nature as well as the diversity in the author's literary research career. Taking modern Vietnamese literature as the subject, Professor Phan Cu De provides a historical perspective to see the movement and development of literature, at the same time reflecting and summarizing phenomena from a theoretical perspective, while studying typical cases. The book seriesVietnamese writer(conducted with Professor Ha Minh Duc) provided materials and aimed to help readers visualize modern literature in a specific and vivid way through portraits of selected writers.Modern Vietnamese Novelshas the nature of a theoretical topic. CoilVietnamese vocabularyFirst published in 1985, it is one of the basic textbooks of the Faculty of Philology, Hanoi University of Science, now the Faculty of Linguistics, University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The book has applied modern principles in world lexicology and semantics to solve problems of Vietnamese vocabulary and semantics that have been studied, and in each field, this work has shown its own contributions.

Vietnamese words and word recognitionis the result of a ministerial-level scientific research project "The problem of identifying and classifying Vietnamese lexical units" and a ministerial-level experimental production project "Words and syllables in Vietnamese". This is a meticulous work of good quality, contributing significantly to solving a very important but extremely difficult problem in Linguistics. The work has pointed out the inconsistency, unreasonableness, and unsuitability to reality of the ways of identifying words and morphemes in Vietnamese. Based on the achievements of modern linguistics, the author has proposed a separate solution to overcome the above shortcomings.

11.Thang Long - Hanoi in the 17th - 18th - 19th centuriesAssociate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thua Hy, State Prize for Science and Technology 2010

This work has outlined the appearance of Thang Long - Hanoi through the periods, especially the 17th - 18th - 19th centuries, highlighting the socio-economic structure, economic activities of Thang Long - Hanoi through the 17th - 18th - 19th centuries, the policies of the feudal states of Vietnam towards this issue through the case of Thang Long - Hanoi. The work provides sharp analysis of the economic structure, social structure, class mechanism and class exchange; generalizations about the factors of development and rise of urban areas, about the relationship between urban areas and rural areas, about the dual state - folk in urban areas, about the form of development and transformation of urban areas become important theses. As an excellent study on Thang Long - Hanoi, the work can be considered an exemplary monograph on the history of Thang Long - Hanoi as a city playing the role of political - administrative center of the country. 12.Vietnamese Phonetics -Prof. Dr. People's Teacher Doan Thien Thuat, State Prize for Science and Technology in 2010

The work describes the phonetic-phonological phenomena of Vietnamese: syllable structure, phonetic and phonological characteristics of tones, phonological theory of rhymes with short vowels... through the scientific application of theoretical foundations and phonetic-phonological description methods of traditional phonology. At the same time,Vietnamese Phoneticshas inherited the achievements in theory and research methods of phonetics of Oriental languages ​​of authors belonging to the Russian-Soviet Orientalist school to study Vietnamese phonetics. The results ofVietnamese Phoneticsapplied in the study of Vietnamese phonetics (applied phonetics), contributing to solving some practical problems related to Vietnamese phonetics. This can be considered one of the works that laid the foundation for teaching and researching linguistics in general and Vietnamese linguistics in particular.
