Born and raised in Lien Ha commune, Dong Anh district, Hanoi city, Associate Professor, Doctor, Meritorious Student Duong Van Thinh graduated from Hanoi University of Science in Mathematics in 1976. Due to the requirements of training a new science - Philosophy at that time, a number of cadres who graduated from natural sciences and social sciences were sent to study at Nguyen Ai Quoc Party School to later teach and train students in Philosophy. Teacher Duong Van Thinh was one of them. He was sent to study at Nguyen Ai Quoc High-level Party School, branch 5 and received his graduation certificate in 1979.
After completing his studies, he was assigned to work at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of General Sciences (now University of Social Sciences and Humanities) from 1979 to present. At that time, the Faculty of Philosophy had just been established for 3 years. He was one of the first pillars of the Faculty, participating in teaching the leading students of the young Philosophy major.
Associate Professor, Doctor, Meritorious Teacher Duong Van Thinh
Associate Professor Dr. Duong Van Thinh has always been passionate and dedicated to his profession. He did not know when his love for Philosophy came to him. At that time, this new and abstract science discouraged many students. In order for the Faculty of Philosophy to survive and retain students, he and the first generations of teachers of the faculty such as Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Chi Hieu, Professor Nguyen Huu Vui, Professor Bui Thanh Quat... wholeheartedly encouraged and motivated students, passing on to them the flame of love for Philosophy. In 1985, he was sent to study as a doctoral student in the Soviet Union and successfully defended his Doctoral Thesis in Philosophy in the Soviet Union in 1990.
Returning to the country, returning to the Faculty of Philosophy, he devoted all his mind to the career of research, teaching, and imparting valuable knowledge acquired from abroad to students. Having studied Marxism-Leninism from the original works, systematically absorbing scientific knowledge from a modern education system, when returning to serve the country, he was always aware of his responsibility to the industry, to the profession, to the students, to the Philosophy of the country. Many generations of students have listened to him lecture, received from him a pure and systematic knowledge of Marxism-Leninism. Even though "things change", in him, people still see a sparkling belief in the good things, the humanistic values of Marxism-Leninism when it is directed towards people and for the true happiness of people.
In the late 80s and early 90s of the 20th century, when the socialist system fell into crisis and collapsed, the biggest challenge came to Philosophy in particular and the theoretical subjects of Marxism-Leninism in general. He was one of the steadfast people who still firmly held the steering wheel to help this science stand firm against the changes of the times. He always encouraged his colleagues to be creative, innovate teaching methods, and link theory with practice to help students deeply and thoroughly understand theoretical issues, and feel that Philosophy is close to life. The scientific value and humanitarian spirit of Marxism-Leninism have always been the motivation and goal that urged him to strive and devote all his passion to his career of researching and teaching Philosophy.
In his career of training and research, Associate Professor Duong Van Thinh contributed to the establishment of the Department of Marxist-Leninist Philosophy. At the same time, the growth and maturity of the Faculty of Philosophy today have had a great contribution from him. Philosophy is a special science, always directly linked to practical issues, closely following practice and guiding practice. In the cause of national innovation, with a strategic vision, our Party has clearly seen the role of theoretical thinking in social life, in human cognition and practical activities. The Faculty of Philosophy has also carried out innovation with the pioneering of teachers, leading professors and associate professors. Many new departments were established, and later separated from the Faculty of Philosophy to form separate fields of study that have developed strongly such as Sociology, Psychology, Social Management, etc. With specific and meaningful work, he has made great contributions to the overall development of the school.
Associate Professor, Dr. Duong Van Thinh is Deputy Head of the Faculty of Philosophy (1998-2008).
Generations of students always remember Associate Professor Dr. Duong Van Thinh as an exemplary teacher, always dedicated and wholehearted. His lectures are always pedagogical in nature, with rich knowledge and strict logic. The years of studying in the Soviet Union helped him form a philosophical mindset, acquiring rich and systematic knowledge from a modern education system. In his lectures, he imparted to generations of students not only knowledge but also faith, scientific materialist worldview and revolutionary outlook on life, helping to form in them a positive concept and ideal of life. He always showed his passion for the profession, always concerned and creative in teaching and scientific research. Associate Professor Dr. Duong Van Thinh has participated in management work for many years, holding the position of Deputy Head of the Faculty of Philosophy. Currently, he is the Head of the Department of Marxist-Leninist Philosophy, a large and important department of the Faculty of Philosophy.
The main research directions that he continues to pursue are still the issues of Marxist-Leninist Philosophy in both theoretical and practical aspects: issues in classics, Marxist dialectics, philosophy in natural sciences, political and social issues of today's era, etc. These are truly thorny issues whose interpretation not only requires philosophical thinking but also a truly scientific, revolutionary and creative methodology.
With all his passion, considering this as his "career", he always wondered how to have the best quality lectures and Philosophy textbooks for students. He actively wrote textbooks and lectures to serve the teaching work, including a number of important textbooks widely used in the Philosophy training program at university and postgraduate levels in the national education system. In addition, he also has many articles and scientific reports with profound philosophical thinking, systematically published in prestigious specialized scientific journals, and the Proceedings of National and International Scientific Conferences.
Associate Professor Dr. Duong Van Thinh is a prestigious person in his field and in the collective. He always cares about and nurtures the younger generation in the department and faculty, and unites to help everyone progress together. He is also always cautious in his speech and behavior. He confided: after all, Philosophy is still a very special science, its intersection and close connection with politics is obvious. A Philosophy teacher is not only a teacher who explains science but also has the responsibility to guide students to maintain faith, optimism and a positive attitude towards life. He has fulfilled that duty with his example, his faith, and his own personality.
Many times, in the exchanges with many students of Philosophy, he said: "If I could choose my life again, I would still choose to teach Philosophy". That's it, a difficult, dry, abstract science, but once you step into it, the passion is hard to stop. As a follower, a generation of students of Associate Professor, Doctor, Meritorious Artist Duong Van Thinh, I believe and sympathize with what he said. The noble title of Excellent Teacher that the State awarded him has honored and recognized the merits, valuable contributions and personality of a teacher in the best sense of the word.
