From the battlefield to the lecture hall
Born in the studious countryside of Nam Dinh province, Pham Ngoc Thanh dreamed of pursuing a career in teaching and research from his school days. Like many of his peers, in July 1971, while a second-year student at the University of Culture, he put aside his studies and enlisted in the army, becoming a Trường Sơn truck driver in Battalion 58, Division 470, Central Highlands Front, Trường Sơn Command. In 1973, he was wounded and treated in the rear. In 1974, he was transferred to the North, and after the victory of April 30, 1975, he was discharged from the army and returned to continue his studies at the History Department of Hanoi University. Graduating with honors and being retained by the university as a lecturer, coupled with the courage and qualities of a soldier of Uncle Ho's army forged on the battlefield, helped wounded veteran Pham Ngoc Thanh become a teacher and scientist full of willpower, determination, and optimism, continuing his path of learning and scientific research.

For Associate Professor Dr. Pham Ngoc Thanh, conducting scientific research, especially in the history of philosophy, politics, culture, and management, is both an objective choice and a personal passion. His involvement in these closely related yet highly independent fields of science began in 1984. As a young lecturer in the Department of Marxism-Leninism, he was sent by the State to pursue doctoral studies in Philosophy at Yerevan State University, Soviet Union. In 1989, after defending his doctoral thesis, he returned to work at the Department of Philosophy and served as Head of the Department of Scientific Socialism for many years. Professor Pham Ngoc Thanh has participated in the compilation of numerous textbooks and demonstrated his interdisciplinary research capabilities by contributing to many valuable scientific works serving research and teaching, such as:History of Philosophy – 3 volumes(Ideology and Culture Publishing House, 1991-1992);Scientific socialism,Education Publishing House, 1991 (reprinted many times until 2003)Learn about some terms and concepts in Marxist-Leninist theory.Ideology and Culture Publishing House, 1992History of Philosophy(National Political Publishing House, 1998)History of political thought(National Political Publishing House, 2001), …
Interdisciplinary projects
In his scientific research, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Ngoc Thanh is also a great example of self-study, self-research, and venturing into new fields. Ideally, with his solid training in Philosophy, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Ngoc Thanh could have focused solely on teaching and researching in that field. However, he didn't stop there. While teaching at the Philosophy Department, he also participated in preparing to establish a new academic discipline. In 2002, when the University of Social Sciences and Humanities established the Department of Management Science (now the Faculty of Management Science), he, along with many other scientists, continued to work on building and perfecting the curriculum, textbooks, and lectures to serve the training of management human resources for the country. For many years, as a manager of the newly established unit and in his new area of expertise, he directly taught and compiled many lectures and materials characteristic of the field, such as...Lectures on the History of Management Thought, Social Management in Education, Culture and Ethics of Management, Politics and Social Management, Political Philosophy...With the inherent perspective of a scientist, possessing both the generality of philosophy and the specificity of management science, Professor Pham Ngoc Thanh has studied the relationship between culture and social management in a very vivid and profound way. Following this line of thinking, over the years, Associate Professor Pham Ngoc Thanh has led six scientific research projects, been a member of many large research projects, and published more than 35 articles on related topics in specialized scientific journals and at domestic and international conferences. Notably, he has been entrusted by the State to lead two state-level scientific research projects.Reforming leadership and management culture in Vietnam today.(State-level research project KX.03.21/06-10, implemented 2009-2010, is part of the State-level key scientific research program.Issues of social development and social development management in the Central Highlands(State-level research project. Code TN3/X07, under the State-level key science program). The research results of these two projects have contributed to providing many scientific arguments for the Party and the State to improve the management mechanisms and policies in our country today. At the same time, the research results of the professor have contributed to enhancing the position of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi in scientific research. Through these research activities, a strong interdisciplinary research group has been formed to complete large-scale projects, train many young scientists, and create links with many scientists in various agencies and local practitioners.
Committed to the field of Cultural Management

He was the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Management Science, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (2002-2012), and the Head of the Department of Management Theory and Methods, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (2007 to present).
Along with scientific research, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Ngoc Thanh is also very interested in transferring research results into human resource training. His efforts are demonstrated through scientific works such as:The current issue of cultural and human development.(co-author, Books as Worlds, 2011);Innovating leadership and management culture - Theory and practice(editor-in-chief,PublisherLabor, 2011);Reforming leadership and management culture in Vietnam today.(editor-in-chief,Books such as(National Politics, 2013). Furthermore, over 45 postgraduate students have successfully defended their master's theses, one doctoral candidate has defended their doctoral dissertation, and three doctoral candidates are currently under his supervision… these are the clearest evidence of his efforts in training high-quality human resources for the University. Many colleagues, undergraduates, postgraduate students, and doctoral candidates who have been guided and inspired by him in their studies and scientific research have become independent scientists and talented managers in various fields and in different localities throughout the country.
Having been involved in teaching and scientific research at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities for many years, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Ngoc Thanh shared his future plans:"The field of management culture is a relatively new area, and management practices are raising many urgent issues that need to be further clarified in the country's development process. In the future, my priority will remain this field, but I will delve deeper into the specific issues of organizations in different sectors and localities. Furthermore, I will also focus more on leadership culture and leadership ethics. Through this, I hope to attract the attention of faculty members, young scientists, undergraduates, and postgraduate students to join me in research on management culture. That is my aspiration."
