Harvard-Yenching Doctoral Scholarship

The Cooperation & Development Office of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities introduces a scholarship program for PhD students sponsored by the Harvard-Yenching Institute (HYI) in collaboration with the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU). PhD students wishing to pursue a PhD at one of these two universities can apply for a corresponding scholarship program below.

Joint PhD Scholarships betweenHYI and NUS

- Target audience: Applicants from universities or research institutions in Southeast Asia that are partners of the Harvard-Yenching Institute; with a research focus on East Asia or Southeast Asia; and intending to pursue a PhD at the National University of Singapore. - Application documents: Applicants should prepare all necessary documents according to the instructions of the National University of Singapore at the following address:http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/research/application-info.htmlAdditionally, applicants must complete the HYI-NUS scholarship application form (attached) and submit it along with the above documents.

Accepted candidates will pursue a PhD program at NUS and receive a scholarship from NUS. Candidates will study for three years at NUS and one year in the United States. The study period in Singapore will be funded by NUS and will last a maximum of three years, while the study period in the United States will be funded by HYI. In the United States, candidates will study at the Harvard University campus. Candidates may take one semester (four courses) as a special student at Harvard University and receive credit recognition from NUS.

- Application documents: Applicants should prepare all necessary documents as instructed by the University of Hong Kong. In addition, applicants must complete the HYI-HKU joint scholarship application form (attached) and submit it along with the above documents.

Accepted candidates will pursue a PhD program at HKU and receive an HKU scholarship. Candidates will study at HKU for a maximum of four years and in the United States for one academic year (10 months). The study period in Hong Kong will be funded by HKU and will last up to 48 months, while the study period in the United States will be funded by HYI. In the United States, candidates will study at the Harvard University campus. Candidates may take one semester (four courses) as a special student at Harvard and receive credit recognition from HKU.

The Harvard-Yenching Institute will not award scholarships to doctoral candidates from universities other than NUS or HKU. The Institute will also not accept individual applications, and scholarship applications submitted directly to the Institute without formal endorsement from a nominating institution will not be considered.
