The Office of Cooperation and Development, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) introduces a scholarship program for PhD students sponsored by the Harvard-Yenching Institute (HYI) in collaboration with the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU). PhD students who wish to pursue a PhD at one of the two universities above can apply for one of the corresponding scholarship programs below.
Joint PhD Scholarship betweenHYI and NUS
- Target audience: Candidates from universities or research institutes in Southeast Asia that are partners of the Harvard-Yenching Institute; have a research interest in East Asia or Southeast Asia; and intend to pursue a PhD at the National University of Singapore. Successful applicants will undertake a PhD programme at NUS and will receive a scholarship from NUS. The applicant will study for three years at NUS and one year in the United States. The period of study in Singapore will be sponsored by NUS for a maximum of three years, and the period of study in the United States will be sponsored by HYI. In the United States, the applicant will study at a Harvard University campus. The applicant may study one semester (four courses) as a special student at Harvard University and have their grades recognised by NUS.
Joint PhD Scholarship between HYI and HKU
- Target: Applicants from universities or research institutes in Southeast Asia that are partners of the Harvard-Yenching Institute; whose research interests lie in any topic in the humanities or social sciences; and who intend to pursue a PhD at the University of Hong Kong. - Documents: Applicants must prepare a complete application according to the instructions of the University of Hong Kong. In addition, applicants must complete the HYI-HKU Joint Scholarship Application Form (attached) and submit it with the above application.

Accepted candidates will study a PhD program at HKU and receive an HKU scholarship. The candidate will study at HKU for a maximum of four years and in the United States for one academic year (10 months). The period of study in Hong Kong will be sponsored by HKU and will last up to 48 months, while the period of study in the United States will be sponsored by HYI. In the United States, the candidate will study at a Harvard University campus. The candidate may study one semester (four courses) as a special student at Harvard and have their grades recognized by HKU.
The Harvard-Yenching Institute will not award fellowships to PhD candidates from schools other than NUS or HKU. The Institute will also not accept individual applications, and fellowship applications sent directly to the Institute without formal approval by the nominating school or institute will not be considered.
