Invitation to submit proposals for the 2026 International Conference on ASEAN Studies

The workshop will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam from October 22–24, 2026.

Workshop Topic:"ASEAN-Korea Partnership in the Age of Crisis: Connecting Development, Innovation and Cultural Identity"
In the current context, as the world faces climate emergencies, the threat of pandemics, economic disruptions, and escalating geopolitical tensions, the partnership between ASEAN and South Korea is at a critical juncture. Both regions confront the challenge of building sustainable and resilient development pathways that connect sustainable development, technological innovation, and cultural preservation.
This workshop examines various aspects of ASEAN-Korea relations, focusing on common challenges such as climate change, the digital divide, inequality, and geopolitical tensions. Simultaneously, it seeks collaborative solutions through strategic partnerships, mini-lateral cooperation, and enhanced people-to-people connections, aiming to build a more equitable, sustainable, and crisis-resilient regional order.
In this context, the Korea Institute for ASEAN Studies - Busan University of Foreign Studies (KIAS-BUFS), the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH), and the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) jointly organized this workshop as leading scientific research institutions.
The workshop brought together scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to analyze how ASEAN and Korea (ROK) can jointly advance the interests of the Global South nations while maintaining the region's central role and strategic autonomy.
The organizing committee cordially invites lecturers and researchers from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, to continue submitting panel proposals, including papers related to the conference's overarching theme.
Papers on the following subtopics are especially encouraged:
1. ASEAN-ROK Strategic Partnership in the Global South Context
2. Mini-lateral Cooperation between ASEAN Sub-Regions and Korea
3. Emerging Issues in ASEAN-ROK Relations
4. General Topics:
- Climate justice and green transition
- Inclusive development and social justice
- Cultural diplomacy and people-to-people connections
- Geopolitics, security and regional order
- Higher education and knowledge networks
- Digital Humanities
- Economics and Literature - Arts
- Cultural industry
- Literature and culture of ethnic groups
Submit a proposal/abstract and publish it in a journal.
1. The organizing committee respectfully requests that scientists submit only panel proposals; individual papers will not be accepted.
2. The panel proposal must include the panel discussion title, along with the titles and summaries of all planned presentations within the panel.
3. The abstract of the paper must be written in English, approximately 5 pages long, and should clearly present the core arguments of the research.
4. Following the workshop, authors are expected to finalize their presented papers for submission to the SUVANNABHUMI: Multidisciplinary Journal of Southeast Asian Studies (SCOPUS) or other academic journals published by the co-organizing units.
Please note that not all submissions are accepted for publication. Submissions undergo a rigorous peer review process before being published.
5. Deadline for submitting proposals and abstracts:
- Submission of panel proposals and resumes (CVs): March 13, 2026
- Notification of acceptance results: March 14, 2026
- Submission of abstracts for the paper (only applicable to selected proposals): June 20, 2026

Organize a workshop
- All participating agencies and organizations will be listed as co-hosts.
- Co-organizing units may invite speakers from their academic networks to participate in the discussion sessions.
- The co-organizing (sub-organizing) units are responsible for arranging airfare and hotel accommodation for the delegates they invite.
- The main co-organizers, including the Korea Institute for ASEAN Studies (KIAS-BUFS), the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH), and the Institute of Literature – Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences (VIL-VASS), will provide the conference venue, conference materials, meals, and city tours for all delegates.
- Co-organizing units should prepare and promote the image of their organization/institution and academic journals at the conference venue.
