Online consultation: University admissions 2012
Welcome, prospective students and readers, to the online university admissions counseling program organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, this morning, March 10, 2012.PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR QUESTIONS HERE Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim – Standing Deputy Secretary, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities:On behalf of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, I would like to extend my warmest greetings to the parents and prospective students participating in the 2012 University Admissions Counseling Program. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities is a university with a long tradition and prestige in research and training in social sciences and humanities throughout the country and the region. Over the years, the University has continuously developed in all areas of activity, including training, research, and international cooperation, thereby earning the high trust of society. In accordance with the policy of the Ministry of Education and Training and the Vietnam National University, Hanoi regarding the 2012 admissions process, the University is actively preparing for this important task. One of the key tasks is the admissions counseling program to help prospective students understand the new regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, gain a deeper understanding of the University's training programs, and explore job opportunities after graduation. At the same time, we are preparing the conditions for continuing our studies at the master's and doctoral levels. In today's program, I would like the candidates and their parents to ask questions focusing on how to choose a major that suits their abilities and aspirations; how the university will support students' studies, as well as scholarships and policies... These are essential issues for students and their families throughout their studies at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

I noticed that this year the university only offers the Archival Studies major and not the combined Archival Studies and Office Administration majors like in previous years? Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim:Welcome to your question about Archival Studies. That's a topic I'd like to share with all of you. Since 2012, in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training regarding the list of university training programs, Information Science, Archival Studies, and Tourism and Travel Service Management have been offered at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Following the principle that one training program name can encompass multiple training programs, students admitted to Information Science, Archival Studies, and Tourism and Travel Service Management are trained in programs with the following names: - Information - Library - Archival Studies and Office Management - Tourism Studies. Rest assured that if you study the programs I just mentioned, you will be trained in faculties with a long tradition and reputation for training at the University. Good luck!Teachers, I would like to ask, if I study linguistics at this university, will I have the opportunity to...Is it possible to study for a double degree or a major-minor degree like in other departments? And if possible, what other subjects could I study and what degrees could I obtain? Are there any dual enrollment programs at other universities within the Vietnam National University system? Thank you. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Chinh – Deputy Head of the Department of Linguistics:The university offers dual degree programs for students after completing their first year if they achieve an average academic performance or higher. Linguistics students can pursue majors such as English at the University of Foreign Languages, and other majors at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities such as Journalism, Literature, etc.Could you please provide a brief statistic on the number of graduates who find jobs directly or closely related to their field of study? Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Quy – Head of the Department of Information and Library Science:Hello! I welcome your question on a very important issue, not only for you and your family but also for many other candidates. According to a survey by the Center for Quality Assurance in Higher Education of the University, out of 102 former Information and Library Science students from the 2004-2006 cohorts, over 99.01% have found employment in their field. Regarding the timing of employment, 43.13% found jobs immediately after graduation, 49.01% found jobs within 1 to 6 months, and 7.86% found jobs 6 months after graduation.

Could you tell me if Anthropology is a new field of study offered in Vietnam? What kind of knowledge will students studying Anthropology acquire? Dr. Nguyen Van Suu – Deputy Head of the Department of Anthropology:Thank you. This question suggests you've already done some preliminary research on Anthropology. Generally speaking, Anthropology is a science that integrates knowledge from both social and natural sciences to systematically study human beings from various perspectives, from the past to the present. This means anthropologists study human beings in relation to many aspects, including biological, cultural, economic, political, and social aspects, etc., within the broadest possible context: the past and present (from human ancestors millions of years ago – including pre-human ape species – to today). In Vietnam, the term Anthropology is still relatively new, hence the name of the field, Anthropology, which is reflected in the fact that university programs bearing this name have only been offered for a few years. However, in reality, the current Anthropology training program is an expansion and development of the Ethnology training program to foster development and integration with the world. Ethnology is a specialized field that has been established and developed in Vietnam since the 19th century, and to date has trained a large number of bachelors, masters, and doctoral graduates. Therefore, to answer your question, I can say that while the name suggests it's a relatively new field of study, considering its history, Anthropology has a long tradition of development and training spanning several decades in Vietnam.

I plan to major in Archival Studies this year, but I'm unsure about job opportunities afterward. Could you tell me where I can work after graduating from this program? Is the employment rate for graduates high? Dr. Nguyen Lien Huong – Deputy Head of the Department of Archival Studies and Office Management:Currently, the demand for human resources in the fields of Archival Studies and Office Management is very high, with a wide range of job openings across many different positions. After graduating from this program, students can take on the following jobs: + Working as a clerk or archivist in agencies and businesses + Working in administration and office management in domestic and international organizations and companies + Serving as a secretary/administrative assistant to heads of agencies and businesses + Working as a lecturer at universities and colleges that offer courses related to documents, records management, archiving, administration, and office management… Due to the wide range of job openings, the employment rate for graduates each year is usually over 90%, with most graduates taking on jobs related to their field of study. As far as I know, this year students who win third prize or higher in the National High School Excellent Student Competition will be admitted directly to majors that are directly related or closely related to the subject in which they won the prize. I recently won second prize in History in the National High School Excellent Student Competition. So, which majors will I be admitted directly to? MSc. Dinh Viet Hai – Deputy Head of Training Department:Congratulations on winning second prize in the national excellent student competition! Among the 18 majors at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, you definitely have a chance to apply for direct admission to the History major. In the next few days, the Ministry of Education and Training will announce the list of majors that are relevant or closely related to the subjects of the excellent student competition for direct admission, and the University will announce more details then. Please continue to check the University's website to find out which majors you are eligible for direct admission.MSc. Dinh Viet Hai:Currently, the Advisory Board is receiving many questions from prospective students. To ensure sufficient online time, the instructors will first answer questions about general aspects of the entrance exam and questions related to Philosophy, Information and Library Science, Linguistics, Anthropology, Archival Studies, and Tourism Studies. Questions about other fields will be answered immediately after today's consultation session. We invite prospective students to continue following.Dear teachers, I would like to ask how many students are being admitted to the Tourism Studies program at our university this year, and what are the job prospects after graduation? Also, how many foreign languages do I need to learn to become a tour guide? Thank you very much. Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy, M.Sc. – Deputy Head of the Faculty of Tourism Studies:Hello, I'm very happy that you're interested in the Tourism Studies program (now renamed the Tourism and Travel Service Management program according to the Ministry of Education and Training's guidelines on program naming). This year, the Faculty is still recruiting 100 students. According to surveys of alumni over the past three years, the employment rate of Tourism Studies graduates is very high, with a significant percentage earning an average income of over 4 million VND. Most students are quite flexible and have participated in part-time jobs at tourism, service, restaurant, and hotel businesses since their third year. To be a good tour guide, you need to be fluent in at least one foreign language. I also want to add that as a good tour guide, you will have many opportunities to demonstrate your abilities and earn a high income. In addition to their fixed salary, travel companies currently pay tour guides over 400,000 VND/day for domestic guides and around 600,000 VND/day for English-speaking guides. For guides speaking rare languages (Portuguese, Italian, etc.), the rate can be over 1,000,000 VND/day. Furthermore, tour guides earn additional income from tips from clients or commissions and other service fees. It is not easy to determine the exact actual income of a tour guide as it depends heavily on their skills, attitude, responsibility, and work efficiency, but many tour guides earn an average of over 20 million VND/month.We often hear people talk about Philosophy and the Philosophy Department at our university, but I don't understand what kind of jobs we can do after graduating with a Philosophy degree? Where can we work? What are the career prospects? Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan – Deputy Head of the Department of Philosophy:Hello, Philosophy is a fundamental science. After graduation, a Bachelor of Philosophy graduate can pursue one of the following careers: - Firstly, teaching Philosophy: Principles of Marxism-Leninism, Religious Studies, Logic, Ethics, etc. For this role, employers are the Departments of Political Theory Education at universities and colleges nationwide; and the Party's political schools and academies from the central to provincial levels. Career prospects: They can become highly qualified lecturers specializing in one of the fields of Philosophy, or become PhDs, associate professors, and professors of Philosophy. - Secondly, there is the study of philosophical communication: This involves fundamental and in-depth research into various fields of philosophy, such as the history of Eastern and Western philosophy, social philosophy, practical philosophy, etc. This could lead to editorial work for journals and publishing houses, or positions ranging from entry-level to managerial roles in Party and State agencies, as well as socio-political organizations from the central to local levels. Other job opportunities are also available.Dear teachers, I would like to ask for your guidance. This year I aspire to enroll in the Library and Information Science department at your university. I have a few questions that I hope you can answer. Firstly, as far as I know, the Library and Information Science department has a quota of 60 students. I would like to ask if this quota includes students who are directly admitted to the university? Secondly, I would like to know the exact code for the Library and Information Science program to help me complete my application. Thank you very much for your attention and for answering my questions! Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Quy – Head of the Department of Information and Library Science:The 60 student slots already include those for direct admission to the university. This year, the code for the Library and Information Science program you wrote in your application is: D320201. Good luck! I hope to see you on campus.Dear teachers, I would like to ask if the school has any partnerships with organizations or businesses to enhance job opportunities for students. Thank you. Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy, M.Sc. – Deputy Head of the Faculty of Tourism Studies:Hello, it's commendable that you're concerned about career prospects right from the start when choosing your major. The Faculty of Tourism Studies has signed cooperation agreements with many 3-star to 5-star hotels, several travel agencies, and tour companies in Hanoi to introduce students to internships and employment opportunities at these businesses. The Tourism and Science Services Company (TASS Co.Ltd), affiliated with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, also employs graduates from the Faculty. Students are also introduced to paid internships at restaurants, hotels, and retail stores in Singapore for 6-12 months. Participating students receive a fixed salary of approximately 10 million VND/month, including insurance, accommodation, and at least one meal per day, excluding bonuses and overtime pay, along with a certificate from the internship provider. In the past, about 30 students have participated in this program, and the internship providers have evaluated them as highly adaptable and flexible. Of course, it also depends on your foreign language skills.Dr. Nguyen Lien Huong – Deputy Head of the Department of Archival Studies and Office Management:Office Management is taught at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the Bachelor's program in Archival Studies and Office Management, starting in 1995. The quality of a training program depends on many factors such as the teaching staff, teaching methods, school facilities, management policies, and services… All of these factors are strengths of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi compared to many other training institutions nationwide. To date, no other institution in Vietnam offers a Bachelor's degree in Office Management. The Archival Studies and Office Management program equips students with extensive knowledge of textual studies, administrative studies, archival studies, management studies, and workplace culture. The program covers office management skills, communication skills, presentation skills, meeting organization skills, secretarial duties, and administrative office skills. The school regularly collaborates with many partners, such as Party and State agencies, political and social organizations, and economic organizations, in providing internships for students. Over 50% of graduates are currently employed in businesses. You can gain practical experience at large economic corporations such as VNPT, EVN, and PAC.I would like to ask what kind of knowledge I will acquire if I am accepted into the Archival Studies program? Are there any special qualities required for students to pursue this field? Dr. Nguyen Lien Huong – Deputy Head of the Department of Archival Studies and Office Management:Students majoring in Archival Studies and Office Management will be equipped with fundamental and systematic knowledge of state administrative documents, document management, public administration, archival studies, and office management theory. In addition, students will be trained in basic skills in document management, archival work, and office management, such as document drafting skills, file creation and management skills, office activity organization skills, and skills in organizing and scientifically and technically organizing archival documents. Because it is not a specialized field, generally all students can take the entrance exam and study Archival Studies and Office Management. However, those with careful and meticulous personalities, good organizational skills, and strong communication skills will have an advantage in their studies and future employment.I'd like to ask if studying Linguistics is essentially studying a foreign language? What will I mainly be learning if I study this major? Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Chinh – Deputy Head of the Department of Linguistics:There's a common misconception that studying Linguistics is the same as studying a foreign language. In reality, English is just one subject in the program's curriculum, but it's carefully designed to ensure students achieve an English proficiency level equivalent to an IELTS 5.5. As a student of Linguistics, alongside knowledge from other social sciences and humanities disciplines, you'll learn in-depth linguistics, Vietnamese linguistics, applied linguistics, and the languages and cultures of ethnic groups in Vietnam, the region, and the world. You'll also learn about journalism editing, dictionaries, publishing, text drafting and analysis, etc. This knowledge will enable you to work in a wide variety of organizations and positions. You can watch a video about Linguistics at this address:http://ussh.vnu.edu.vn/10-nam-khoa-46-ngon-ngu-hoc/3689 I am a private candidate wanting to take the A-block exam for the university. Should I submit my application to the University of Science or directly to the university? Mr. Nguyen Van Hong - Staff member of the Training Department:Within the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the University of Science is tasked with organizing the entrance exam for all candidates applying for the A, A1, and B subject groups. If you submit your application to the university between April 17th and 23rd, you will be submitting it to the University of Science. However, please note that the name of the university you are applying to in your application form must still be the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.Dear teachers, I noticed that the university previously offered a Tourism Studies major, but now it also offers a Tourism and Travel Service Management major. What are the differences between these two majors? And if I work in the tourism service industry, what specific jobs would I be doing? Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy, M.Sc. – Deputy Head of the Faculty of Tourism Studies:Hello, according to the Ministry of Education and Training's guidelines, since 2012, the Tourism Studies major has been renamed the Tourism and Travel Service Management major. Tourism is a comprehensive economic sector with high social impact, so after graduation you can become an employee, executive, or manager in service businesses such as: food and beverage (restaurants), accommodation (hotels, resorts...), transportation (car companies, ships, airlines...), entertainment (parks, amusement parks...), office reception, event organization, tourism festivals, media, outdoor activities, consulting and training... as well as many other supplementary services. If you don't work in service businesses, you can become a lecturer or researcher at vocational schools, colleges, or universities that offer tourism training. Alternatively, you can become a specialist at state management agencies in tourism or related fields such as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, provincial Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Departments of Trade, Tourism Management Boards, media agencies, etc., or participate in international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and community support activities.Dear teacher, my name is Tran Quang Minh from Hanoi. I am interested in applying to the Information Science program at the Faculty of Information and Library Science, but I'm not sure where I can work after graduation. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Quy – Head of the Department of Information and Library Science:After graduation, you can work at the following organizations: Information centers/agencies of ministries and sectors from the central to local levels of the State; information agencies of businesses, non-governmental organizations, and embassies. In addition, graduates also have the potential to work in other fields such as: Research staff in research institutes; Staff of newspapers, electronic magazines of institutes, research centers, companies of enterprises, non-governmental organizations…

I'd like to ask about my plans to take the Vietnamese Studies entrance exam this year. I'm not sure what kind of job I can get after graduation. Could the teachers please answer my question? MSc. Dinh Viet Hai:Hello, studying Vietnamese Studies will give students knowledge about the culture, customs, and traditions of Vietnamese people throughout the country, as well as understanding of history, geography, and economics. Many Vietnamese Studies graduates become tour guides at museums, historical sites, and tourist attractions, or work as officials in state agencies managing culture and tourism. Students can also become lecturers or researchers at educational institutions offering courses related to Vietnamese Studies, or become editors and reporters at domestic and international media organizations.Could you please give me some more specific examples of jobs that Anthropology graduates get after graduation? Dr. Nguyen Van Suu:Thank you for such a great and specific question! To help you understand better, let me give you a few examples. If we consider the period from the 1960s to the present, on average, dozens of students specializing in Ethnology (now Anthropology) have been trained by our department each year (not including students trained at other universities). So where do they work? I see some working at the Committee for Ethnic Minorities, some at the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, some at the Ministry of Education and Training, some at museums, tourist areas, conservation areas, libraries, some at the Ethnic Affairs Committees in provinces, some teaching at universities, some at research institutes, some working for international organizations operating in Vietnam, and some pursuing postgraduate studies in developed countries in America, Europe, Australia, etc. So you can see that the field of work for an anthropologist is very broad and diverse. The facts have proven this. But I want to emphasize that among the countless jobs available, which one do you enjoy the most, which one are you best suited for, and which one are you most capable of doing—a lecturer, a researcher, an office worker, or a manager implementing development programs and projects? If you want to pursue any of these careers, choose Anthropology and create a study plan to strive and train yourself to become a professional anthropologist. I believe you will find joy and have the opportunity to succeed in the field and career of Anthropology that you have chosen.Dear Professor Tuan, I just read your previous answer. I would like to know why, after graduating with a Philosophy degree, one can work in so many different fields, from research to teaching and many other jobs? Is that really true? Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan – Deputy Head of the Department of Philosophy:Studying Philosophy will cultivate perseverance, resilience, and a diligent, meticulous, and serious approach to all tasks. Philosophy students are provided with a system of advanced research methods and practical skills for approaching social issues, alongside a foundation of knowledge in the history of philosophy, social philosophy, and other basic sciences. This is why Philosophy graduates can pursue diverse careers, as I mentioned at the beginning of this counseling session. I wish you success! After graduating with a degree in Linguistics, can I work as a Vietnamese language teacher for foreigners? Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Chinh:There is currently a huge demand for Vietnamese language and culture learning among foreign students. Every year, the Linguistics Department receives recruitment orders from numerous educational institutions for foreigners, such as Vietnamese language and Vietnamese studies schools in France (University of Paris 7, France); Cornell University, UCLA, etc. (USA); NUS (Singapore); Hankook University (South Korea); Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (Japan); universities in China and Taiwan; and international schools in Hanoi and other major cities nationwide. In particular, you can participate in teaching Vietnamese to foreign individuals or organizations working in Hanoi.I'm applying to the linguistics department this year. I want to learn more about the department; where can I find and access information? Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Chinh:When enrolling in the Department of Linguistics in particular, and other departments at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in general, students can access the website: ussh.edu.vn to receive and search for general information. In addition, you can also access the following website:http://ngonnguhoc.orgThere, students can not only find information about the department but also register to participate in the department's forum to directly exchange information with professors, senior students, and fellow students in the department.I would like to ask, if I study Archival Studies and Office Management, where and how can I pursue higher education? Dr. Nguyen Lien Huong:I highly commend your dedication to learning. After completing your bachelor's degree, you can pursue a master's degree in Archival Studies and Office Management, and upon graduating from the master's program, you can continue with a doctoral program in Archival Studies.I'd like to ask, I'm a man but I really like the idea of working as an office secretary, is that okay? Dr. Nguyen Lien Huong:That's great, dear. Male graduates with a GPA of "Good" or higher are always in high demand by many agencies and organizations. For many years, the Faculty has had no one left to recommend.

Dear teachers, I intend to apply to the Tourism Department of our university. From my research, I found that last year the Tourism Department admitted students from three different subject groups. Therefore, I would like to ask what the enrollment quota is for the Tourism Department this year? If I take the Group A exam, what is the minimum score required to be admitted to the Tourism Department this year? Thank you very much! Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy, M.Sc. – Deputy Head of the Faculty of Tourism Studies:Hi, this year the Faculty of Tourism Studies is recruiting 100 students. The admission score for the past two years for Group A subjects has been 16.5-17 points. Try to get more than 17 points to become a future tourism student. Good luck!Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim – Standing Deputy Secretary, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities:After more than two hours, the School's Advisory Board received nearly 30 direct questions, in addition to 22 questions submitted beforehand. We are very grateful to the parents and prospective students who asked questions about the School's training programs. Due to time constraints, the Advisory Board will continue to answer today's questions after this consultation session. On Saturday, March 17th and 24th, 2012, the Advisory Board will continue to answer questions from prospective students about other programs offered by the school. Thank you and best wishes for your health!

Other questions and answers after the consultation.

Due to time constraints, the organizers were unable to answer all questions immediately during the consultation session. Below are the answers from Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy (Deputy Head of the Faculty of Tourism Studies) to questions about the Tourism and Travel Service Management major. AskMy parents want me to study economics, but I want to study a social sciences or humanities field like tourism. What should I do? ReplyYou should explain why you chose that field, and at the same time listen to your parents' opinions on the career path they choose. If you are too rigid in following your parents' opinions, it can reduce your enthusiasm for studying and create a negative feeling towards the field you are forced to pursue. You also need to check if you are suited to that field. If you are proficient in foreign languages, you will easily succeed in the tourism industry. Flexible communication skills and composure are also essential. If you are too introverted, you will not be suitable for jobs that require a lot of travel in the tourism industry, but rather for some office jobs. You should choose based on your existing abilities; this will help you succeed more easily.AskI really like the tourism industry, but I heard that, like flight attendants, you can't do this job anymore after you turn 35-40. Is that true? ReplyOur ancestors had a saying, "The older the ginger, the spicier it gets." Quite a few veteran tour guides over 40 years old are still passionate about their profession. Four years ago, when teaching a professional training course to obtain a tour guide certificate, the oldest student in the class was born in 1948. This student, "Uncle," showed an extremely diligent and progressive attitude towards learning, serving as an example for the entire class. The tourism industry needs dynamism, but also experience and expertise. Rest assured, you will only have to stop working in this profession when your health or passion is no longer sufficient.AskI really like studying tourism, but my health isn't very good, and I often get motion sickness. So, can I still study tourism? ReplyGood health always brings significant benefits. However, not every job in the tourism industry requires the physical strength of a bodybuilder. Many female students, when first starting at the Tourism Faculty, are very afraid of motion sickness, even asking to get off the bus and walk as soon as they get in. However, after some training, they have improved significantly. Experienced lecturers also have many methods to help students reduce their fear of motion sickness. However, if your health isn't very good, you might not choose jobs that require a lot of travel, such as tour guides or shift work at hotels. Office work, tourism operations, sales, marketing, or airline ticketing might be more suitable for someone with less-than-perfect health.AskThis year I want to apply to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) to major in Tourism. After graduating with a degree in Tourism, what kind of jobs can I get? ReplyFirst of all, I fully support this because you've shown interest in the Tourism industry, now known as the Tourism and Travel Service Management major managed by the Faculty of Tourism Studies. In their third year, students can choose one of two specializations: Travel Management or Hotel Management. - If studying Travel Management, you can become a tour guide at tourist areas, museums, historical sites, etc.; a tour guide; a staff member; a manager or executive at travel agencies, transportation companies, event organizers and media companies, delivery services, entertainment services, etc. - If studying Hotel Management, you can become a receptionist, staff member, manager, or executive in various departments within restaurants, hotels, resorts, etc. Students can also work in the reception department of other multi-industry businesses. - If you enjoy teaching, you can become a lecturer or researcher at various institutions.
