Cambodia is a close neighbor of Vietnam. Vietnam and Cambodia have many similarities in history and culture. From 1975 to 1978, the Khmer Rouge regime led by Polpot - Iengsary carried out a genocidal regime. The Cambodian people were tortured, nearly 2 million Cambodians were killed in the most brutal ways in human history.
From 1975 to 1978, the Khmer Rouge army repeatedly invaded the southwestern border of Vietnam. Vietnam persisted in its peaceful struggle, wishing to resolve the conflict with Cambodia through negotiations. Contrary to Vietnam's goodwill for peace, at the end of 1978, the Khmer Rouge government mobilized 19 divisions to attack along the southwestern border of Vietnam. The Vietnamese people resolutely rose up to fight against the Khmer Rouge invasion and at the same time sent troops into Cambodia to overthrow the Khmer Rouge regime to save the Cambodian people from genocide. The Vietnamese army stayed in Cambodia from 1979 to 1989 to help the Cambodian people completely destroy the Khmer Rouge, revive Cambodia, and bring peace and a prosperous life to the Cambodian people. After the Cambodian revolutionary government became strong, the Vietnamese volunteer army withdrew from Cambodia. From 1989 to 1999, the relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia developed well. The two countries became members of ASEAN.
From 1975 to 1989, the contradictions between the capitalist and socialist blocs, the contradictions within the socialist bloc and the interests of major powers had a strong impact on the relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge, once an ally of Vietnam in the resistance war against the US, were incited and provoked by some major powers to become enemies of Vietnam and the Cambodian people. Vietnam's sacrifices for the Cambodian people from 1979 to 1989 were enormous. However, the presence of Vietnamese volunteer troops in Cambodia was distorted by international reactionary forces, who deliberately misunderstood the truth in order to isolate and create an excuse to encircle and embargo Vietnam. In 1989, Vietnam withdrew its troops from Cambodia. The knot in international relations between Vietnam and the world was untied.
In 2018, the International Court of Justice proved the genocide crimes of the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge leaders were convicted of genocide. The international court's ruling that Vietnam's sending troops into Cambodia was to fight against the genocidal regime was a just act of the Vietnamese people.
Although the research issues on Cambodia are very broad, the topics of the scientific discussion focus on the following major issues:
One is, the international and regional context and its impact on Cambodia from 1979 to 1989.
Two is, the role of international organizations, major countries, and Southeast Asian countries in Cambodia from 1979 to 1989.
Three is, the impact of the withdrawal of Vietnamese volunteer troops on the process of resolving the Cambodian problem.
Four is, the impact of international factors on the process of national reconciliation, economic and social development and international integration of Cambodia from 1989 to present.
