Bui Van Di, a prominent figure in Vietnamese history and culture in the latter half of the 19th century.

Born and raised in the low-lying, southeastern part of the Red River Delta, following in his family's footsteps, Bui Van Di was guided by his father to pursue a formal scholarly career and soon demonstrated his intelligence. Throughout his life and official career, Bui Van Di served under seven emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty: Tu Duc, Duc Duc, Hiep Hoa, Kien Phuc, Ham Nghi, Dong Khanh, and Thanh Thai.

Bui Van Di was known as an upright official, wholeheartedly devoted to the country and its people. In every position he held, he demonstrated the responsibility of an exemplary minister, wholeheartedly serving the nation. He was also a great writer and poet of the 19th century and of the entire nation.

His poems are deeply emotional, clear, and many are excellent. His couplets commemorating Hoang Dieu and Bui Vien are truly sublime. His poems about nature reflect the real life of the time... In general, they all carry a melancholic tone, with only rare moments of joy. But whether sad or happy, his poems are the honest voice of a soul rich in poetic qualities.

Professor Bui Cong Hien (fourth-generation descendant of the renowned figure Bui Van Di) is presenting his paper at the conference.

The scientific conference listened to and discussed the following reports: Bui Van Di in Vietnamese history and culture in the second half of the 19th century by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh; The historical context of Vietnam in the second half of the 19th century by Dr. Tran Viet Nghia; A few notes on the family and lineage of Bui Van Di; An overview of the current state of preservation and value of Bui Van Di's literary works at the Han Nom Research Library; Bui Van Di's thought through the poetry collection "Van Ly Hanh Ngam",...

Through the presentations at the conference, scholars focused on clarifying many aspects of the life and position of the renowned figure Bui Van Di in the cultural history of Vietnam in the latter half of the 19th century. This was a glorious but also tragic period in the nation's history.

The seminar also provided an opportunity for scientists and researchers to further clarify the poetic and literary works of Bui Van Di, thereby affirming his contributions as an upright official, a shining example, and a source of pride for his family, his hometown of Ha Nam, and our country.
