Born and raised in the low-lying land of the southeastern Red River Delta, following his father's career, Bui Van Di was guided by his father to follow the path of the official mandarinate and soon revealed his intelligence. Throughout his life of activities and official career, Bui Van Di served under 7 kings of the Nguyen Dynasty: Tu Duc, Duc Duc, Hiep Hoa, Kien Phuc, Ham Nghi, Dong Khanh and Thanh Thai.
Bui Van Di was known as an honest mandarin, devoted to the country and the people. In any position, he always demonstrated the responsibility of an exemplary mandarin, wholeheartedly serving the nation. He was also a great writer and poet of the 19th century and of the entire nation.
His poems are profound, clear, and have many good poems. His parallel sentences in the funeral of Hoang Dieu and Bui Vien are wonderful. His poems are about nature, reflecting real life at that time... In general, they all have a sad tone, rarely do they have a sudden joy. But whether sad or happy, his poems are the true voice of a poetic soul.
