USSH instructors receive training on using the UPM online teaching software.
The commitment of teachers is a prerequisite.
PVAccording to the Ministry of Education and Training, by April 2020, only 50% of Vietnamese universities had implemented online teaching and learning. What factors enable a university in the social sciences and humanities to implement this quickly and systematically, Professor?
Professor Hoang Anh TuanDedicated and proactive faculty members are the decisive factor! Currently, 350 lecturers have been teaching over 1,000 classes (both undergraduate and postgraduate). Furthermore, the support of 7,500 (nearly 95%) students, partners, and alumni has helped the university effectively implement online teaching and learning over the past three months.
PV:How was the training for lecturers conducted under such tight deadlines, Professor?
Professor Hoang Anh TuanLecturers received training before teaching online: from February 20th to February 29th, 2020, there were 4 in-person training sessions for approximately 200 lecturers; after the outbreak, the school organized 3 more online training sessions for the remaining lecturers, and also created detailed instructional videos for teachers and students to refer to.
PVSo, does that mean the school organized training before the Ministry of Education and Training requested online teaching?
Professor Hoang Anh TuanYes, it was a stroke of luck! In November 2019, the school identified one of its five key priorities for 2020 as strengthening the technology in teaching and learning to improve the quality of education. Initially, the school planned to pilot the program in 3-5 departments, but when it was organized, so many teachers participated that the school trained all lecturers who voluntarily registered. Therefore, when the Ministry decided to implement online teaching, the school already had the necessary resources, only needing to provide additional training for the remaining teachers.

Timely management document system
PVProfessor, how do government regulations support the implementation of online teaching and learning?
Professor Hoang Anh TuanManagement documents from the Ministry of Education and Training to Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) provided very timely support to training units: the Ministry of Education and Training issued official letters 795 (March 13) and 988 (March 23), and VNU issued official letter 944 (March 27), providing detailed guidance on teaching and learning activities, inspection, evaluation, and quality assurance…
Based on the directives from higher authorities, the school has formulated specific guidelines to ensure that lecturers and students can confidently engage in online teaching and learning.
PVHas the school ever organized online teaching and learning before, sir?
Professor Hoang Anh TuanYes, but it's not complete yet. Six years ago, the school launched a course website system to support the training process. However, the system is still simple and lacks online teaching functionality, so only about 10% of classes use it each year.
Last semester, some lecturers took advantage of additional livestreaming features from Zoom, Teams, etc., to integrate with the course website. Although it was a makeshift solution, it laid the foundation for lecturers to make significant breakthroughs when the university had a professional and modern platform at the beginning of 2020.

Professional online teaching and learning platform
PVOfficial document 988/BGDĐT-GDĐH requires schools to use a standardized learning management system (LMS) to have their teaching and learning outcomes recognized. How has the school implemented the "standardization" of its LMS?
Professor Hoang Anh TuanDuring the training (February 2020), lecturers used the UPM platform, developed by a company owned by a former student and provided free of charge to the university for two years. UPM is a professional and modern online teaching and learning platform with full functionality as guided by the Ministry of Education and Training and Vietnam National University, Hanoi. 90% of the nearly 1,000 course classes were proactively chosen by lecturers to teach on this platform; the remaining 10% were organized on another platform supported by the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Currently, 100% of the school's online courses have been "standardized" on modern and professional online teaching and learning platforms.
PVIf the pandemic continues, what will the plan be for the semester exams?
Professor Hoang Anh TuanThe school has carefully considered the most feasible and optimal options for semester exams, ensuring the quality of education.
Taking exams in the lecture hall is the preferred option. If the pandemic subsides and students return to the lecture halls in May 2020, the university will organize the semester exams in the lecture halls.
If the pandemic situation worsens and students are unable to attend school, online exams will be considered; detailed plans have also been made for online thesis defenses for nearly 1,500 final-year students. Circular 944/ĐHQGHN-ĐT has provided specific guidance on this matter to reassure relevant units. The university will base its implementation on the actual situation, ensuring the legitimate rights of students.

Technological advancements in teaching and learning are a trend: We must seize the opportunity, but not rush into it!
PVThese days, the community often talks about the "risks" and "opportunities" in online teaching and learning to modernize the field of education. How do you share your thoughts on this issue?
Professor Hoang Anh TuanOnline training is a crucial step in the digital transformation of the education sector. Along with the need for regularly updating lecture content and modernizing university administration, training institutions will have to enhance the technologization of teaching and learning activities to continuously improve the quality of graduates and meet the human resource demands of a cross-border labor market that is now very open and highly competitive. In the context of today's rapidly digitalizing education, any training institution that lags behind will miss opportunities, face the risk of falling behind, or even go bankrupt in the current competitive environment.
Thus, it is clear that the technological advancement of teaching and learning is a common trend in Vietnamese universities. However, at each institution, implementation will need careful consideration, depending on the organizational capacity of the unit, with a specific roadmap, appropriate proportions, and taking into account the unique characteristics of the training field…
In fact, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has affirmed the trend of Blended Learning (combining online and in-person instruction) to modernize training in the coming time. The Ministry of Education and Training is also promoting online training models, mass-market open course systems (MOOCs), open educational resources (OER), etc. After the Covid-19 pandemic, as a very natural trend, many lecturers will combine classroom teaching with the use of professional online learning platforms (LMS) to improve the quality of teaching and learning (managing the training process, assigning homework, testing and evaluation, close interaction with students, etc.).
In short, to survive in today's highly competitive digital education environment, universities must plan carefully, avoiding haste but also seizing opportunities!
PVThank you, Teacher!
