In his opening remarks at the workshop, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam commended the Vietnam National University, Hanoi for its meticulous preparation of the workshop in collaboration with the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences.
The Deputy Prime Minister stated that there are many solutions to promote the country's development, but the important thing is to foster the creativity of individuals and leverage the advantages of science and technology, specifically the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The Deputy Prime Minister noted that rapid development is necessary, but the most important thing is to focus on all factors ensuring sustainable development, to build a Vietnam that, while not as materially wealthy as many other economies in the world, is rich in culture; a place where people, though not rich, always feel happy.
To achieve these goals, scientific arguments, assessments, and recommendations from scientists are essential. Long-standing issues such as cultural exchange and foreign relations, as well as topical issues like climate change and science and technology, will be addressed and discussed by scientists at this conference. Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam believes that with the large participation of domestic and international scientists and the theme "Sustainable Development in the Context of Global Change," the 5th conference will provide many useful and practical recommendations for Vietnam's policy planning and implementation.
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam assessed that the Vietnamese studies community, both domestically and internationally, is a very special and valuable community. This community plays an extremely important role, not only in addressing the demands of development as mentioned, but also as a bridge between Vietnam and the world in all fields.
The Deputy Prime Minister also expressed his hope that Vietnamese scientists and international Vietnam studies scholars would play a pivotal role, working alongside Vietnamese universities, research institutes, and organizations to promote Vietnamese culture and image to the world and further develop research on Vietnam abroad, thereby contributing to strengthening solidarity and friendship among nations.

In his opening address, the Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Nguyen Kim Son, stated that Vietnam is currently facing numerous challenges of development and integration, including national, regional, and global challenges such as: the impact of global climate change, the issue of sustainable development and growth rate, international and regional harmonization in addressing terrorism, poverty, cultural and religious issues, epidemics, and the emergence of the Fourth Industrial Revolution… In this context, organizing the 5th International Conference on Vietnamese Studies, on the one hand, reflects the aspirations of Vietnamese and international scientists for an opportunity to present and exchange research results with colleagues on issues related to Vietnam's development, and on the other hand, discusses many urgent practical issues facing Vietnam in the process of development and international integration.
The main theme of this conference is "Sustainable Development in the Context of Global Change," reflecting an understanding of both the academic and practical needs of Vietnam's development. This theme emphasizes the study of Vietnam within a global context, placing Vietnamese studies within the broader context and interrelationships of the world.
"Viewing science and technology as the driving force and foundation for the development of each nation, we recognize that in the context of a multipolar world, a globalized economy, and a pluralistic culture, the destiny of each nation is not only linked to that nation but is intimately connected to the entire world. Scientists who contribute their intellect and dedication to the development of Vietnam are also contributing to the common prosperity of the region and the world."The Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi expressed.
According to the Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Nguyen Kim Son, while previous conferences mainly focused on the social sciences and humanities, this conference focuses on broader areas, aiming to advise Vietnamese policymakers on the best solutions to broader issues, including scientific matters and technology transfer.
The Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, hopes that the conference will provide scholars with new impressions and information about Vietnam; strengthen exchange relations between the community and network of Vietnamese researchers worldwide; and promote the development of Vietnamese studies on a global scale.
Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU), a multidisciplinary research and training center, has one of the largest Institutes of Vietnamese Studies and a Faculty of Vietnamese Studies in the country, and aspires to be a central hub for connecting, supporting, and developing research activities within the network of Vietnamese studies scholars. We believe that, in addition to waiting for the large-scale, four-yearly Vietnam Studies Conferences, smaller-scale, specialized conferences, group discussions, and regular scholarly exchanges in various fields of Vietnam Studies research are also essential.
