Compared to the previous 4 conferences, this conference is larger in scale and richer in scientific content. The Organizing Committee received 834 abstracts and nearly 500 full-text reports, including nearly 150 reports from foreign scholars.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam welcomed VNU for coordinating with the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences to carefully prepare for this workshop.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that there are currently many solutions to promote the country's development, but the important thing is to promote the creativity of individuals and take advantage of the advantages of science and technology, specifically the 4th industrial revolution. The Deputy Prime Minister noted that rapid development is necessary, but the most important thing is to pay attention to all factors to ensure sustainable development, to build Vietnam, although not as rich in material terms as many other economies in the world, but rich in culture; a place where people, although not rich, always feel happy.
To do that, scientific arguments, assessments and recommendations from scientists are needed. Long-term issues that have been mentioned for a long time such as cultural exchange, foreign affairs or current issues such as climate change, science and technology, etc. will be mentioned and discussed by scientists at this conference. Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam believes that with the participation of many domestic and international scientists and with the theme "Sustainable development in the context of global change", the 5th conference will provide many useful and practical recommendations for Vietnam's policy planning and organization.
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam assessed that the Vietnamese studies community in the country and internationally is a very special and valuable community. The community plays a very important role, not only in solving the development requirements as mentioned but also as a bridge between Vietnam and the world in all fields.
The Deputy Prime Minister also hopes that scientists researching Vietnam and international Vietnam scholars will play a key role, together with Vietnamese universities, research institutes and organizations, in bringing Vietnamese culture and image to the world and developing research on Vietnam abroad, thereby contributing to strengthening solidarity and friendship among nations.
In his opening speech, VNU President Nguyen Kim Son said that Vietnam is currently facing many challenges of development and integration, of national and regional challenges and global challenges such as: the impact of global climate change, the problem of sustainable development and growth rate, international and regional harmony in solving terrorism, poverty, cultural and religious issues and epidemics or the emergence of the 4th industrial revolution... In that context, the organization of the 5th International Conference on Vietnamese Studies, on the one hand, demonstrates the desire of Vietnamese and international scientists for the opportunity to present and exchange research results with colleagues on issues related to Vietnam's development, and on the other hand, to discuss many urgent practical issues facing Vietnam in the process of development and international integration.
The main theme of this conference is “Sustainable development in the context of global change”, demonstrating the understanding of the academic needs and practical needs of Vietnam’s development. The theme of the conference thus emphasizes the study of Vietnam in the global context, placing Vietnam studies in the broader correlations and contexts of the world.
“With the view that science and technology are the driving force, playing the role of the origin for the development of each country, we realize that in the context of a multipolar world, globalized economy, and pluralistic culture, the destiny of each country is not only related to that country, but is closely related to the whole world. Scientists who contribute their intelligence and emotions to the development of Vietnam are also contributing to the common prosperity of the region and the whole world.", Director of VNU expressed.
VNU President Nguyen Kim Son said that while previous conferences mainly focused on the fields of social sciences and humanities, this conference focuses on broader fields, aiming to advise Vietnam's policy-making agencies on how to best address issues in a broader scope, including science and technology transfer issues.
The Director of VNU hopes that the conference will bring scholars new impressions and new information about Vietnam; strengthen the exchange relationship between the community and the network of Vietnamese researchers around the world, promoting the development of the field of Vietnamese studies on a global scale.
VNU is a multidisciplinary research and training center, with the Institute of Vietnamese Studies and the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies, among the largest in the country, and wishes to be a center for connecting, supporting and developing research activities of the network of Vietnamese scholars. We believe that, not only waiting for the large Vietnam Studies Conferences every 4 years, small-scale, specialized conferences, group discussions, and regular scholar exchanges for the fields of Vietnam Studies research are also extremely necessary. Currently, VNU is promoting the construction ofCenter for Vietnamese Studies ResearchVietnam's largest center, located in Hoa Lac, we hope that scholars around the world, with their knowledge and experience, will support information, point out sources and assist us in exploiting and collecting. I hope that one day soon the Center will come into operation and will become a regular gathering place for Vietnamese scholars around the world.", Director of VNU shared.
After listening to the conference overview report presented by Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Giang - Chairman of the Science and Training Council of VNU, scientists and delegates will participate in discussions focusing on 6 groups of specialized fields in the subcommittees: Subcommittee 1 - Diplomacy, cooperation and international integration; Subcommittee 2 - Cultural resources; Subcommittee 3 - Education and human resource development; Subcommittee 4 - Knowledge and technology transfer; Subcommittee 5 - Economy and livelihood; Subcommittee 6 - Climate change.
