Information management in the age of social media: Opportunities and challenges.

Professor Pham Quang Minh delivered the opening remarks at the training course.

Attending the program were Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh – Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities; Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam - Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information; Mr. Ho Quang Loi – Standing Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association; Second Secretary of the Swedish Embassy in Vietnam; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Thu Huong - Head of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication, University of Social Sciences and Humanities… along with reporters, editors, and representatives of sponsors.

This training course is an effort by the Faculty of Journalism and Communication to provide basic knowledge and skills to reporters and journalists in integrating social media into news reporting and newsroom management. It updates participants on new global trends in live reporting within the context of direct media. It also provides reference materials to help learners examine the ethical frameworks of news organizations worldwide regarding the relationship between newsrooms, journalists, and social media – aiming to ensure journalistic principles are upheld under the pressure of speed and information competition.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam, Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony.

The training course content combines theoretical knowledge and specific practical exercises under the guidance of instructors Mr. Timothy Large – a Reuters reporter who has held many positions such as director of media and journalism programs and editor-in-chief of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Quang Hao, lecturer in the Faculty of Journalism and Communication.

This is an extremely necessary activity in the context of social media having a powerful impact on how people access information and challenging traditional news reporting methods of news agencies and editorial offices. While faster and more convenient, social media also poses more risks to readers. This is also the time to redefine the role of journalists and the ethical standards regarding the use of social media to gather and disseminate information.

The program will last for three consecutive days, from January 11th to January 13th, 2017, at the Chi Lang Hall, Army Hotel, 1 Nguyen Tri Phuong Street, Hanoi.
