Strengthening cooperation between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung (Federal Republic of Germany)

On June 20, 2023, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) held a meeting with representatives from the Hanns-Seidel-Foundation (Germany) to assess the cooperation situation, advantages, and challenges in implementing the cooperation project in Vietnam.

Attending the meeting were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Thanh Truong - Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi, and representatives from the Cooperation and Development Office, Faculty of International Studies.

Representing the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung (HSF - Federal Republic of Germany) were Mr. Stefan Burkhardt, Regional Manager for South Asia/Southeast Asia of the Hanns-Seidel-Foundation eV (HSF); Mr. Michael Siegner, Resident Representative of HSF in Vietnam; and Ms. Trinh Ngoc Mai, Program Director of HSF Vietnam.
During the meeting, Associate Professor Dr. Dao Thanh Truong emphasized the successful cooperation between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) and the Hanns-Seidel Foundation. From the end of 2020 to the present, the two managing units have jointly compiled and successfully published five Vietnam National Reports and are currently researching, implementing, and finalizing the sixth report this year. Vice Rector Dao Thanh Truong shared: USSH is one of the core members of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU), always leading in research and training in social sciences and humanities. The university has one key research center and four strong VNU-level research groups, which are core research units that significantly contribute to affirming the university's position in scientific and technological research and high-quality human resources. The Institute for Policy and Management (IPAM) of the University is a key research center at the Vietnam National University, Hanoi – training many policymakers, implementing numerous research and policy development programs for the Vietnamese National Assembly, aiming for a combination of training and research. This will be a typical think tank model in the field of policy and management.

During the working session, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang - Faculty of International Studies, coordinator of the projects compiling and publishing the National Report on Vietnam, shared: The National Report on Vietnam is a synthesis of comprehensive and in-depth research on important social issues in Vietnam, aiming to analyze, identify limitations, and provide recommendations to agencies involved in policy making and implementation. The focus of the publications revolves around topical issues in Vietnam such as population aging, environmental policy, digital transformation, women in Vietnamese society, and addressing the consequences of war... The next issue will focus on issues of the labor market in Vietnam, promising to deliver updated research results and useful recommendations, contributing to the development and improvement of policies in Vietnam.

Representatives from the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung (Germany), Mr. Stefan Burkhardt and Mr. Michael Siegner, highly appreciated the results achieved in the cooperation program between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and HSF, and expressed their desire for both sides to strengthen and expand cooperation activities in the future. The meeting was conducted based on a consensus on the direction of development from both sides, including some new ideas such as compiling a Summary of the main results of the National Report, aiming for accessibility to a wide audience such as high school students and researchers, as well as the desire to develop more scholarship opportunities for students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in the near future.
