Announcement regarding the workshop "Media Management and Crisis Handling in the Context of Social Media"

The workshop will be attended by leading experts in media management such as Mr. Le Quoc Vinh, Chairman of Le Bros Group; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Loi (Vietnam Journalists Association); Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Quang Hao, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong (Faculty of Journalism and Communication)... In particular, some of the issues that will be discussed at the workshop are:Climate Change and Media Crises, “Handling Media Crises from Social Media Rumors: Fighting Evil with Righteousness”, “Risk Management in Digitally Produced Television News Bulletins”, “Information Transparency Mechanisms to Minimize Media Crisis Risks in the Digital Age”, “Filling the Gap in Media Management Training”….

The information explosion and the emergence of new forms of media, especially social networks, have led to organizations and businesses frequently facing crises. It could be the incident of mistakenly transporting passengers to Nha Trang instead of Da Lat, or the lawsuit by Tan Hiep Phat and the "half-billion-VND fly" in a bottle of soft drink, the disappearance of flight MH370, or most recently, the mass fish deaths in the central provinces... Even media outlets can encounter incidents such as allegations of rigged results in a reality TV show, the case involving the age of a U19 football player, a contestant in a talent competition mistakenly drinking acid, or a television station being fined 50 million VND and forced to issue a correction regarding the "Vegetable Sweeping Broom" incident... Crises come suddenly and unexpectedly, with information spreading rapidly, causing many businesses and organizations to lose their composure, leading to inaccurate handling of the situation, creating conditions for the crisis to spread and easily leading to other negative incidents, directly affecting the business, organization, and the public.

One of the significant reasons for the ineffective management of communications and crisis communication is the limitations of the current communications workforce. The communications management skills of leaders and specialized staff are primarily based on practical experience rather than acquired from a specialized knowledge system and a scientifically-based approach. To date, in Northern Vietnam, the only international joint Master's program in Communications Management is offered at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), with a degree awarded by the University of Stirling (UK).

At the conference, experts and delegates will discuss and propose various solutions for businesses and organizations in media management and crisis communication response. Simultaneously, experts will emphasize the urgent need for human resources in the field of media management and the directions for developing training programs in this area in Vietnam.

Time:8:30 AM, Wednesday, July 20, 2016.

Location: 2nd floor, Building H, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
