The first seminar of the series of seminars "New studies on Japan and Asia" in 2015 took place on May 23, 2015. MSc. Ho Thi Thanh (Department of Southeast Asia) presented a report on "THE ROLE OF CIVIL SOCIETY IN PROMOTING DEMOCRATIC REFORMS IN INDONESIA - FROM 1998 TO PRESENT". The author assessed that the activities of civil society organizations have played an important role in promoting the development of democratization in Indonesia over the past half century. Many civil society organizations have conducted on-the-ground monitoring, mobilized people to raise awareness, and put pressure on the government to change related policies, but these activities have encountered many obstacles from government officials, collusion between powerful groups, and social habits. The report topic is assessed by Associate Professor, Dr. Ngo Van Doanh (Institute of Southeast Asian Studies) as one of the scientific issues that is both fundamental and topical. The experiences and lessons learned from the formation and operation of civil society organizations and their role in promoting democratic reform in Indonesia from 1998 to the present are certainly meaningful to Vietnam in the current period of building a rich, democratic, and civilized country.

Associate Professor, Dr. Van Ngoc Thanh (Hanoi National University of Education) commented that the studies on Subhas Chandra Bose and the idea of relying on Japan to save the country that Dr. Nguyen Tran Tien mentioned are important suggestions in understanding the national liberation movement in Asia during World War II.
