The role of women in Vietnam and Korea: cultural customs.

Dr. Lee Kye Sun

Dr. Lee Kye Sun's lecture discussed the role of women in Korean and Vietnamese societies from a comparative perspective. The doctor noted that the roles of women in Vietnam and Korea share many similarities but also have significant differences. Currently, the ingrained notion of "preferring men over women" is gradually disappearing, while the role and position of women are increasingly recognized and valued. Women in both countries have been actively participating in the economic, political, and social activities of their respective nations. The differences in marriage systems between the two countries are also an interesting point of comparative study for sociologists. For example, the marriage age in Korea is much higher than in Vietnam due to financial pressures. This stems from the traditional division of responsibilities in marriage in Korea. Dr. Lee Kye Sun is a full-time lecturer in the Sociology Department at Thang Long University and a visiting lecturer in the Korean Language Department at Hanoi University. She defended her doctoral dissertation in Sociology at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi in 2010. She is a member of the Vietnam-Korea Women's Forum and participated in an ODA project supporting vocational education for women in Nghe An province. Her research focuses on women's rights, family, and early childhood education.

This event is part of the KF series of lectures in Vietnam organized by the Korea Foundation. It serves as a forum for dialogue and academic exchange between Korean politicians and senior scholars and Vietnamese intellectuals, aiming to promote cooperation and cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries.
